A fire has broken out in a tower block in west London with reports that people are trapped in their homes.

The fire in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in Latimer Road in White City started in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The fire brigade said on Twitter they were responding to a fire on the Lancaster West Estate. Two hundred fire fighters are at the scene along with forty engines that were called at just after 1.15am.

Photographs and video from the scene showed huge flames engulfing most of the block, with lights on in many windows. The tower contains 120 homes.

Witnesses described hearing shouts for help coming from people inside the tower and walls of the building creaking.

Fabio Bebber tweeted from the scene that the fire had taken over most of the block.

The Metropolitan Police said two people were being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and cordons were in place. Residents in neighbouring streets were being evacuated.

George Clarke, the presenter of Amazing Spaces, lives nearby. He told Radio 5 Live: “I was in bed and heard ‘beep, beep, beep’ and thought, ‘I’ll get up and run downstairs as quickly as I could’.

“I thought it might be a car alarm outside and saw the glow through the windows.

“I’m getting covered in ash, that’s how bad it is. I’m 100 metres away and I’m absolutely covered in ash.

“It’s so heartbreaking, I’ve seen someone flashing their torches at the top level and they obviously can’t get out.

“The guys are doing an incredible job to try and get people out that building, but it’s truly awful.”

The tower block was built in the 1970s as part of the Lancaster West Estate project.

People have now taken to the council to protest over the lack of work done by them. I wonder how well it would go down if they responded with "Well it's part and parcel of you having a kitchen".

if we never find out the cause of the fire you can bet it was some kebab making falafels at 1 in the morning or smoking shisha in bed

was still a rumor last i knew, apparently that was confirmed yesterday

a dindu did it, he well did

I want to know what caused that fridge to explode though, no power surge was detected in the area so that's out but there could be a more unusual explanation as well like fire A caused bigger fire B or he was a idiot and he was rigging is PAYG electrical meter in some way for free power and it caused something to fuck up.

I read the other day on one of the tenants' groups blogs that since the renovation the building had been prone to sudden strong power surges that were burning out people's white goods. There was a post about people being left without cookers, washing machines, fridges etc.

I know only a fairly small amount about fire forensics so I doubt it will be possible to prove whether this was a factor. But if this is a known problem inside the building, it's not impossible that this could have been a cause.

Another thing that will go on the large and fast-growing slate of things for the inquiry to look at.

It also might just have been a shittily-made fridge, see the never-ending Whirlpool tumble dryers debacle.

Edit to add: Found the post. Looks like remedial work was done but I don't know enough about electrical work to know whether the problem was fixed properly by this. My television goes off every time the compressor inside my fridge comes on, so I'm not in much position to talk :( https://grenfellactiongroup.wordpress.com/2013/05/29/grenfell-tower-from-bad-to-worse/

I haven't read that but it wouldn't surprise me and by the area I was talking about the local area of white city not the tower block that would have it's own substation so that would make sense. The building it's self was a product of 60's Post War Construction i.e. was built fast and cheap so it was leaky as hell and also had other structural problems with the design that have been made worse by neglect.

I've seen a couple dumbasses on facebook try and use this horrible, ongoing tragedy to try and prove that 9/11 was an inside job.

It's not even been a week show some respect for the victims and their families by not using this to further your agenda

I'd just like to point two things out about this -

1) The Redshirt on the Right is a member of Momentum i.e. Corbins shill's, they have taken to before the last election to staging and organising protests and some of them are linked to antifa and borrow heavily from rather questionable playbooks like BLM's protest.

2) High Vis in the shades see that Logo? That's Amey he's Council staff but I am really not surprised that Amey is involved in this even around the edges, they have their grubby little mit's in every government service in the UK to some extent or another and when they get involved in anything it always goes to shit. If there is a government contract they WILL have a hand in it in some way and they have a really nasty way of hiring the cheapest staff they can and dicking them around while doing so.

You mean Mr. Bean's coin-operated power meter is real? You damn Brits...

Yep except it's mostly for poor people and it's a USB dongle thing down, you can get Gas, Electric and water ones for the new smart water meters. They are kinda fucked up because they end up costing more and the meters are not often all that accurate in their use and very hard to get serviced if they throw inaccurate readings and the people who use them don't know any better or can't budget for a bill every 3 months.

I understand the anger but physically assaulting an innocent bystander...Way to win people to your side.

Hopefully that guy is OK.

that second paragraph is 100% right

the market is always better than the government at everything, and in this case it was public housing that was absolute shit and in conditions to kill dozens if not in the hundreds

It's not the government's fault in a way. They can't do almost anything right, and it's our fault for granting them the power to meddle in shit they shouldn't be meddling in
