COPENHAGEN, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede emphasised his desire to pursue independence from Denmark, its former colonial ruler, during his New Year speech, marking a significant change in the rhetoric surrounding the Arctic island's future.
Egede's speech, which comes on the heels of comments by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump expressing his wish for "ownership and control" of Greenland, also expressed a desire to strengthen Greenland's cooperation with other countries.

"It is about time that we ourselves take a step and shape our future, also with regard to who we will cooperate closely with, and who our trading partners will be," he said.
An independence movement has gained traction in Greenland in recent years in part due to revelations of misconduct by Danish authorities during the 20th century, including an involuntary birth control campaign launched in the 1960s.

Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953 but is now a self-governing territory of Denmark and in 2009 achieved the right to claim independence through a vote. In 2023, Greenland's government presented its first draft constitution.
"The history and current conditions have shown that our cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark has not succeeded in creating full equality," Egede said.
"It is now time for our country to take the next step. Like other countries in the world, we must work to remove the obstacles to cooperation – which we can describe as the shackles of colonialism – and move forward," he said.

He added that it was up to the people of Greenland to decide on independence but did not say when a vote could be held.
While a majority of Greenland's 57,000 inhabitants support independence, there is division over the timing and potential impact on living standards.
Greenland's government has twice rejected offers by Trump to purchase the island, in 2019 and again last year, with Egede asserting that "Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale."

The speech did not mention Trump or the United States. Greenland's capital Nuuk is closer to New York than the Danish capital Copenhagen.
Despite the wealth of mineral, oil, and natural gas resources, Greenland's economy remains fragile, heavily dependent on fishing and annual grants from Denmark.
Greenland is due to hold parliamentary elections before April 6.

@Null the plan moves forwards. Our agents are almost in total control of Greenland. The 51st state is about to come home.

Not a single country that appeared or could still appear today as a result of breaking off of a dominating, progressive European/White nation has or could ever found/find itself in a better position than before their independence.
I don't know (((who))) might be behind these wierd and unnatural attempts to divide great, big and powerful countries into smaller, inferior and weaker patches of land, but I know for sure who DON'T benefit if/when such attempts are successful - it's the people inhabiting the newly-independent nation: both the "colonisers" (they leave/get killed en-masse after they SUDDENLY find themselves no longer in position to protect their life and possessions or receive outside help as the "natives" happily proceed to oppress/genocide a now helpless minority) and the "natives" (civilisation crumbles as cream of the crop "colonisers" are no longer present to support it, quality of life plummets to rock bottom and the "natives" SUDDENLY realise they have devolved back to their backward, medieval lifestyle, having doomed themselves and their future).
Greenland and their <60000 denizens could NEVER benefit from independence for a lot of reasons, but mainly because "Green"land has more ice than "Ice"land and it's 90% Inuits (see above for why it's bad news). Best case scenario, mainland Denmark intervenes and jails the crooked politicians that sold their asses to foreign influence aka America. Worse case scenario, the US quickly subjugates the island and Inuits get culturally enriched by shitskins for the first time evar. Worst case scenario, Trump does a 180 and backs down, Denmark decides Greenland isn't worth it for whatever reasons and simply evacuates the 10% of Danes; infrastructure collapses, Inuits starve to death and go back to herding deers.

divide great, big and powerful countries
Denmark is none of those things.

Classic Europoor cope and delusions of grandeur, Denmark is an American vassal. If it makes you feel better consider Greenland payment for American protection even after you failed to meet the NATO spending targets so you could pay for more sandinggers to rape your women.

It's corporations who believe that smaller, weaker countries are easier for them to strongarm into signing away the rights to their land and the natural resources in it for extremely cheap. It's what they've currently been doing in Africa, and why those same people have been salivating over the idea of dismantling Russia into dozens of statelets.

I can't wait to exploit shituits and destroy their culture to economically enrich millions of white people.
I will be very respectful to the eskimos, I just like it there since it's way too cold for poojeets and niggers to move there.

Denmark besides being an American vassal (USA military used Danish soldiers as human shields), Is also subject to the European Union's laws and regulation. So Greenland is a subordinate to a subordinate country. I'm banking on them preferring the USA for it's own governance and and military and infuential security.

Come on, Drumpf, let's buy this island.

Population of Greenland: 56,583

Kiwifarms members: 123,038

Instructions are clear and received. Migration begins.

The USA could pay every single one of those iceniggers $85k a year for their shitty island and it would be $4.5 billion a year.

That’s what the USA spends in 6 hours in the current budget.

That’s what Ford lost on electric vehicles last year. It’s pennies.

It’s about $14 per current US person. Let’s do this.

It is. So is Greenland. It’s not the Danes who have that great big installation up at Thule is it? Raytheon have more power there than Greenland. Things go on up there that dont bear close public scrutiny.
Having said that, if i was him I’d be making noises like this to get more of that sweet tax money from the novo nordisk bump to the tax coffers.

I'm certain there's more than a few people buried under the permafrost because they got too close to certain unmentionable places, intentionally or otherwise.

"Sorry about your husband, ma'am. We've sent out a big search party but no luck. We think he probably fell into a deep crevasse somewhere and you're never going to have a single personal object of his to bury save what you've got at home."

Buried under the permafrost?

Screw that.

If they declare independence, the United States will have no choice but to reestablish the Greenland patrol to protect them from inevitable Danish aggression.
