The home ruled Danish colony of Greenland will go to the votes, and one of the main themes will be independence, which would make them the thirteenth largest nation in terms of area, the tenth smallest in terms of population,

It would also completely trash their economy, as half of their income is from Denmark. It would vastly change Arctic geopolitics, as the country that is potentially the center of control of the Arctic Sea and a unknown amount of natural resources would be an independent and maybe bankrupt country, ripe to get colonized by China, USA, or Russia.

Also, Greenland would be the third country in the world, after Bolivia and Guatemala, to have a majority of Native Americans.

And can't find a link to it in English, but there is a strong anti-Danish sentiment in Greenland and there is a strong dislike against Danish language.

And Greenland is one of the top suicide rates in the World.

In short, if they vote for independence there will be a nation of xenophobic dirt-ass poor suicidal Eskimos that have stuff that almost everyone wants at the North Pole. This might lead to some hilarity.

If Greenland becomes independent, I propose that the US goes on an expedition to liberate them from any oil they may possess or otherwise acquires them as a territory. An inuit-American war would make for a great documentary in years to come and may actually lead to a US occupation that manages to piss off the locals so much that they wait a few extra years before killing themselves.

To make this all better a lot of the high-skills jobs in Greenland (both trade and Academic) are now being done by 5000 Danes living in Denmark, and most Greenlanders are unqualified for them since they can only speak Greenlandic, and don't know how to speak to or want to learn languages like Danish and English, and in order to get higher education they have to go to Denmark.

Well, the US has an air base there, and the personnel is something like 1% of the entire population. That's a much higher percentage than you ever had in Iraq. The US has already pretty much occupied the island.

Seriously though, I doubt Greenland could function as an independent nation. They could sell mining and drilling rights, and become a tax haven to get some much-needed cash, but there's very little infrastructure, few schools, the economy's mostly based on fishing, and, well, nobody lives in the damn country.

I know that Molybdenum and other valuable metals are found in the Arctic so if those kinds of metals are found in a ecologically barren realm like Greendland they could sustain themselves for the foreseeable future on those rights.

I would laugh if the combination of the harsh winters and high suicide rates turns the nation of Greenland into a nation of Arctic warriors who do not fear death as they charge onto the frozen battle field with their dogsled and polar bear cavalry.

Now that would change Arctic geopolitics!

They'd probably negotiate an agreement where they still got the money. Europeans have a pretty strong white guilt complex.

If Greenland becomes de jure independent, they would probably immediately become a de facto colony all over again when one country is the first to set up an exploitative trade agreement to plunder their resources. But if they play it right, they might be able to get a better deal. Alaska uses the money from it's oil revenue to set up essentially a pension/welfare fund for permanent residents of the state. If the Greenlanders can get something like that they could be like a mini frozen Saudi Arabia, where they can get a high standard of living and outsource all the work to some foreigners. May not be that difficult with a population just under 60,000 people.

Probably way too :optimistic: though. I wouldn't blame the Danes to just decide to keep them anyway regardless.

The Siumut party claimed a narrow victory with 27.2 percent of the votes in Tuesday's election ahead of its main rival the left-green Inuit Ataqatigiit party which won 25.5 percent.

Greenland, which is rich in natural resources, gained autonomy from Denmark in 1979 and was granted self-rule in 2009, although Copenhagen retains control of foreign and defence affairs. Both the two main parties favour independence.

They were challenged by the centrist Demokraatit which won 19.5 percent of the vote and has a more moderate take on independence.

For those wondering about Demokraatit, a more "moderate" take on Greenlandic independence means they do not view independence as a top priority, they want education and economic issues to come first, and independence only if the current circumstances change.

Meaning that the other two parties wanna leave now. To hell with anything else.

Oh and they're probably rename it as Kalaallit Nunaat. Which is Greenland in Greenlandic.
