So, I gave the Max Payne trilogy a go again. I played the first one years ago, never played the second one and I only did the first two acts of 3 way back when.
What a trilogy. Kinda looking forward to the Remedy remakes of the first two games, but I just know they'll adjust the tone in a way that won't make it hit like the originals do.
I played them for the first back in 2024 I think, the first two at least, 3 wasn't on sale so I didn't cop until later last year. They are really good, MP1 is just one of those 2000's Kino titles when it seemed like there were no bad games and MP2 is one of the few games that I think surprisingly handles a more mature story involving sexuality well.
What I found most surprising was how much I enjoyed MP3, and it might honestly be my favorite, even if it has nothing to do with MP2's plot or have any meaningful connection to MP1's plot beyond Max's grief and regret. (why didn't they make the villain a member of the Inner Circle?) Even beyond how well MP3's gameplay is, I just really enjoy the last act of the story so much, and this is in a series with already great last acts. "YOU'LL WALK... WITH A LIMP!"
The remakes are already at a hard spot because:
A. they aren't going to wow me like MP1 because it won't have the 2000's blockface Sam Lake appeal and won't have the graphical upgrades that MP2 does
B. No James McCaffrey
C. Both games will likely be toned down in some way
That said, give me restored content, more engaging dream sequences, more lengthy campaigns, have Timothy Gibbs play Max
in voice and looks, have it play like MP3, and I think we'll be fine.
