Some more details about the 2022 GTA 6 footage leak reveal that the hacker used a phishing scam on a Rockstar India employee to gain access to sensitive files. The info also shed some light on the role of Rockstar India in developing the game's 'Vice Beach' area.
Following what turned out to be the biggest gaming leak of this decade so far — the 2022 Grand Theft Auto 6hack — some additional details have surfaced regarding how the hacker managed to breach Rockstar Games' security.
According to a recent post by the X (formerly known as Twitter) account @morsmutual_, it appears the individual responsible for leaking content, known as Arion, tricked an employee at Rockstar India through an email phishing scam while the employee was working remotely. The phishing attack led to the hacker gaining access to the employee’s browser data, which then opened a way for him to gain access to Rockstar’s internal Slack channel. What happened next reportedly cost the company millions of dollars — five million to be precise. The hacker gained access to sensitive files, including those related to the highly anticipated GTA 6.
This leak, which included around 90 video clips of early GTA 6 gameplay, was one for the books. The breach gave the public a first look at the game's setting, including "Vice Beach" — reminiscent of GTA Vice City, the wildly popular installment from 2002. Arion also reportedly accessed GTA 6 source code, following which, law enforcement arrested the hacker. He was identified as a 17-year-old guy from the UK, and has since been remanded to juvenile detention.
The source further revealed that Rockstar India had been assigned a significant part of the project, namely the development of the “Vice Beach” area, which is expected to be a major part of the new game’s map. If one single regional branch was involved in designing merely one key section of the map, it's crazy to think how massive the scale of GTA 6 could be, especially considering that Rockstar India is a crucial contributor to the map design. Rockstar India's internal studio in Bengaluru, officially established in 2016, has been involved in several high-profile games in the past as well, including contributions to Red Dead Redemption 2 — one of the studio's most acclaimed games.
This information demonstrates the substantial likelihood of vulnerability exploitation in remote work environments, and illustrates how a simple phishing scam can compromise even a major studio such as Rockstar. While Rockstar has since made efforts to contain the fallout from the leak, like releasing an official trailer for the game on December 4, 2023, it remains to see if any major developments in the future affect the release date of GTA 6.

Financial year or calendar year? End of FY 2025 is March 31st 2026.

I have a feeling that the game is complete and they're desperately hoping that console numbers pick up, or that the Switch 2 is powerful enough for a port.

I wouldn't be shocked it GTA6 launches on PS4.

they'd been working on it in the background since at least 2014 though it officially started development proper after rdr2 was finished because its kinda hard to work on two really big games at the same time. I'd say nearly 7 years by the time it should release.

Seven years for the amount of studios they have a long, long time. High-res specs and the usual drivel aside, smaller studios have churned out big games in a smaller timescale.
I understand how large and complex GTA is, even if they're just running on the same base code/physics as GTA5, it should be completed and ready to ship now, let alone in another 12 months time.

I wonder how badly re-tuning the game from last-gen to this gen effected the timeline.

I would say two separate markets. Selling a console and selling a highly anticipated title don't always correlate with one another, unless it would be a system seller itself. Nintendo generally operates in a bubble independent from the rest of the industry.

I'm sure there would be SOME overlap with people buying Switch 2s and buying the next GTA.

I don't think the jeets had any hand in the trilogy; It was all War Drum Studios (now Grove Street Games), which existed even before Rockstar India. Ironically, War Drum shat on the games more than Rockstar India.

Doubt it. However I'd expect a PC port incredibly fast, in 3-4 months or so. Long enough for some people to double dip, but short enough so most people actually buy the game.

Any examples? Rockstar has 2000-2500 people if i remember correctly. 1000 people developed V, and almost the entire studio worked on RDR2, around 2000 people. V took 5 years to develop, same with RDR2. Considering how their employee count hasn't changed since, I'm assuming that most of the team is wasting their time on useless shit (horse balls) because I feel like the PS5 hasn't stepped up enough from the RTX 20 series running RDR2 at ultra to warrant an extra 2 years of dev time.

There's probably something going wrong in the office.

Not by much, I don't think. I'd assume they were developing for PC first on AMD hardware considering how close the PS5 and Xbox is to a Radeon card, and then having to change APIs for the PS5s OS since the Xbox literally just runs Windows.

NMS was 16 people. KCD was a small team. Larian was fairly small when they churned out DoS 1 and 2, plus expansions and PC/Console ports. For the King is a small team and they've done a game + expansions + sequel + expansions. Sony studio Insomniac churned out four games in as many years.

Big studios take forever to do shit.

Yeah, I just thought of Larian after posting that. The game's definitely in some sort of shit. Even if the game turns out to be good, I wonder if we'll get some Halo 2-esque horror stories from the developers.

Just wait for the credits to be 5000 variants of patel, gupter, singh and rajeet.

The game will have a Copening weekend of record highs showing how awesome the game is. When the dust settles, it will tank. No online for a year and a $2 billion budget to sell a game to absolute max 85 million customers. The majority of people are playing GTA on PS4 and they aren't about to pay £550, let alone £700 for a new console.

I hope so. But remember this is R* we're talking about. These are the people that would release it consoles then would release either for months or worse years.

• GTA 4 Came out on April 29th 2008 - PC Port came out on November 18th, 2008 (GTA 4 is also regarded as one of the worst PC Ports ever)
• GTA 5 Came out on September 17th 2013 - PC port came out on November 18th 2014

they still nearly bankrupted themselves developing them. And baldur's gate 3 still took about 6 years to develop

For the King is a small team and they've done a game + expansions + sequel + expansions.

that's indie and with a simpler artstyle. of course you can get something like that out faster than a AAA game with realistic graphics

if talking about spiderman, they kinda had a lot of the assets already available for use in the sequels, not that people here care for them after the first game had already been out. ratchet and clank was a remake, so less work needed to be done for asset creation, and they probably reused a decent amount of assets in its sequel. both of which probably still used sony's help and resources to expedite the process.

point is, game development is a mess that amazes me that we even get any games to come out in the first place. 6 will probably be a swansong for rockstar, one last big hit before they try and fail to recapture that magic with something else.

It was still a complex game to be made by a small team. Even given five years from launch look at what they accomplished, for free. They added content after content to the game.

BG3 started on one team while the other two worked on DoS3 and Div:Tactics. They were brought over later to help push the game out and it was still done by a much smaller team than GTA and is a large and deep game for the content.

GTA 6 has assets from previous GTA games. 2500 people. Coming on 7 years with one (?) official trailer that was forced because of a leak.

They will try and fail to recapture the magic of GTA with 6. Big studios can't make games on time because they're an inefficient mess. Rockstar India is responsible for making a large part of the map. We saw what happened when they used that idea for Starfield.

That's what RDR2 is imo, GTA6 has hype and memes going for it, but other than that, i doubt the game is gonna be as good as 5, let alone RDR2
