With so much of the writing talent gone, I'm expecting this female protagonist to be Rockstar overcompensating for their "failures" in V. Just the idea of them "not wanting to punch down" makes me think GTA VI will be more toothless than past entries, but what can I expect from the same timeline where Saints Row of all things has become sanitized nonsense?

I'd like to be proven wrong, but the way most female protagonists have been made this past decade doesn't give me much hope.

There you go. The Marvelisation of GTA. Easy targets, easy jokes, never an ounce of seriousness in regards to the story. Satire without bite. I can't wait for the scene where the Latinx kills an Elon Musk/Trump/Incel stand-in and proceeds to stand on a pulpit and talk about how rape culture causes her to kill.

I would happily have a female protag, but I don't want two playable characters. Three was too many last time. And as Vault Boy points out, the last decade has been overcompensation in terms of female leads made solely because they need a female lead to appease the people who don't buy their game and they never work because of it.

Also, updating the game to add maps overtime? Fuck me. When did this tripe turn into industry standard?

I'll play Vice City and IV thanks.

This just makes me sad. I'm used to franchises I once loved being destroyed by the preachy, self-righteous and tone-deaf zeitgeist of current times, but it hurts more to see it happen to Grand Theft Auto, in which a major part of these games are to satirize the contemporary theme of the times.

It's like resurrecting George Carlin and having him dressed in rainbow colours and crying "Trans rights!" at every available opportunity. There's that extra level of hurt to it because they used to bite back at this kind of thing.

Hoping the leaks are bullshit but what a joke if they're true, it'll have been over a decade of waiting for a massive disappointment. Oh well, I still have all my copies of the 3D games and IV, and there's plenty of mods.

If this is true, I definitely think it nails GTA VI down to a US location, and gives a boost to the Vice City concept.

I think the launch will be troubled, my guess is that a lot of these changes must have occurred once Houser was out and if the rumors of the GTA VI development reset post-Houser are true.

I'm always impressed by just how well San Andreas holds up to this day. A handful of quality-of-life mods and fixes and it feels practically modern.

so everyone is losing they mind because they rehashing catalina? the bonnie and clyde thing been a thing since gta 3, and was most biggest in san andreas which is supposed to be the greatest gta of them all.

and rockstar aint been punchin down on marginalized groups since vice city. san andreas ditched the goofy accents and one liners for more serious take on gang bangers.

and they especially havent punched down since gta 4. the comedy from then on has firmly been in the "shit on the usa" territory, with most of it being targeted at whites. the most "offensive" thing they done to a minority group since then was hide some trannies in a public restroom in mirror park that none even realized were there until got rid of em

Too bad none of us have the ability to build our own GTA with Blackjack and Hookers. Everything from what Schreier said pretty much confirms the fears that everyone in the AAA business is too afraid to offend anymore. No video game studio wants the reputation of being the next Charlie Hebdo.

thats not what i said at all. you can enjoy a game for things other than its story. the problem with saints row isnt that its woke, its that its the same old mediocre shit gameplay while being woke.

you found a way to enjoy watch dogs 2 despite its woke garbage narrative. i think its premature for you to declare the genre dead just because we might get another mediocre gta story that shits on the usa. what if the actual gameplay is fun as hell? its like nobody even considers that anymore.

then again, maybe that makes sense because gamers and developers spent the better part of 15 years pushing storyline and cinematic bullshit in a medium that should have been about having good gameplay and being fun first and foremost.

The battle royale genre, most likely. See Fortnite and Warzone. I don't get why games have to continuously "evolve" as live services, especially single player games. Just build an open world, expand on it via expansion packs and DLC.

Typically, the story and gameplay go hand in hand. It's actually one of my complaints about Watch Dogs 2: its tone and plot clash with its open world gameplay. I believe that is called ludonarrative dissonance. WD2's protagonist is part of this hacktivist group determine to expose ctOS. Yet, you are able to achieve that through violent weaponry.

Actually, I touch on this with this earlier post in this same thread. The cultural direction R* is going with GTA is not going to gel well, especially given its past history of pushing technological and social boundaries with its tongue in cheek writing.

I kind of find it funny that they want a Latina as one of the lead characters for GTA VI, yet didn’t they already have one like this in GTA III and San Andreas?

It will be funny to see how they will convince GTA fans that a couple like this who ended up getting killed by police while being progressive all for the sake of wanting a Latinx Latina presence is a good idea. If they replace this real life crime duo with two females as the lead characters, then this is just proof that they’re running out of ideas.
