Here's the news of the Government Shutdown as of 1/22/19

It's been a month now since this shutdown started which started back in December and no deal seems to be coming.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...day-32-as-democrats-vow-to-reject-trump-offer

"The longest government shutdown in U.S. history entered its 32nd day on Tuesday with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expected to call up legislation to advance a proposal from President Donald Trump, which Democrats have already said they’ll reject.

The president said in a Jan. 19 speech he would support a mix of immigration-related proposals in exchange for $5.7 billion to build a wall or other barriers along the border. Trump’s supporters, including Vice President Mike Pence, pointed to the offer as evidence of the president’s willingness to strike a compromise with Democrats.

Pelosi’s Democrats, meanwhile, plan more votes of their own in the House to reopen the government, with a new offer of $1 billion for border upgrades -- but not a wall -- on tap this week.

He gave them the spending bill which is the only fucking thing they gave a shit about.
Did he though?

And is the spending bill the only thing they care about?
https://thehill.com/homenews/senate...ill-to-make-sure-shutdown-never-happens-again

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Sunday he will support a bill that would prevent future government shutdowns in the event of funding lapses.

"Now that the shutdown is over, we should roll up our sleeves and make sure it never happens again," Schumer said at a Manhattan news conference, according to Newsday.

Schumer said he will back a bill introduced by Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) called The Stop "Stupidity" (Shutdowns Transferring Unnecessary Pain and Inflicting Damage In The Coming Years) Act, which would automatically renew funding for all aspects of government, except for the legislative branch and president’s office, at the same level as the previous year.

Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), have also introduced similar legislation, the End Government Shutdowns Act.

The Democratic leader's embrace of the bill came hours after White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said on CBS's "Face the Nation" that President Trump is willing to shut down the government again in three weeks should lawmakers not come to a satisfactory agreement on border security funding.

The president on Friday signed a bill to fund the government for three weeks, ending a partial government shutdown that had lasted 35 days. The measure did not include money for a wall along the southern border, but provided the opportunity for a bipartisan conference of lawmakers to negotiate border security funding.

Trump said in an interview published Sunday with The Wall Street Journal that he views the chances of a potential deal among lawmakers as "less than 50-50."

Now, I’m all for something like this; I don’t think a government shutdown, partial or otherwise should be used as a threat or bargaining chip by either party, nor should federal workers be getting caught in the crossfire of political dick waving. But for fucks sake, man...

You couldn’t come up with a less childish, petty name for it?
If it's coming from late 2010s Democrats, then there's obviously some fine print the news is not reporting.

If there isn't, this will come to bite them in the ass later.

Hey, they do it for drugs, why not this? Asset seizure for anyone who hasn't properly vetted hires and hires illegals. The problem would solve itself in no time.
We'd need a gov agency designed to investigate all sorts of businesses. I personally know a dairy farmer who has 6 illegal Mexicans living in a small trailer in a back pasture. Nobody else wants to work 7 days a week every week, up at dawn, milking twice a day, out in all sorts of weather tracking missing cows, cleaning cow poop, out in the icy dark if necessary. Does he like it? No, but it's that or quit.

c'mon, we all know highway construction, building construction, and other businesses have illegals, especially in places like Arizona and Texas where summer heat is like a literal hell and they're the only people who'll work in it. We know most Mexicans will work though they resent whites, but we don't know what's coming from Honduras or Columbia or wherever. From the looks of things, it ain't good. I support the wall for that reason.

edit word filter jerking off instead of m i l k i n g ? srsly null?

Jesus, like half this thread could be called TDS: Butthurt Kiwi edition. I'll wait and see what happens, because there's always some kind of plan going on usually with this shit. Also because of Schumer's mongoloid ass "Durr we sure showed the BLUMOHFFFF!" comment.

That's Johnny Ace in 1954 before he shot himself:

Curtis Tillman, witness:
"I will tell you exactly what happened! Johnny Ace had been drinking and he had this little pistol he was waving around the table and someone said ‘Be careful with that thing…’ and he said ‘It’s okay! Gun’s not loaded… see?’ and pointed it at himself with a smile on his face and ‘Bang!’"

But all this "HOW COULD HE?! MUH TRUMP VOTE!! FAITH IS SHATTERED!!!1!" shit?

Lol, calm down.

This thread is teetering on flamewar levels. If there's anything this thread has taught me, it's that the only difference between politics and football is that football teams understand the concept of teamwork.

@Lysol your thoughts?

Those statistics come from the people who get caught.
No they don't. They're almost entirely based on the total foreign born people in the US, total authorized foreign born people, total overstayed visas and several demographic IVs like length of stay, ethnicity and occupation. Data is collected by both independent institutions, federal institutions like BLS, the Census Bureau and DHS and individual states (and some municipalities). There is no enormous hidden population of illegal immigrants, and the data required to accurately estimate the size of the population is not dependent on direct measurements of it.

I'm not sure what part of that is either a lie or fictional.
The argument is over intent of the amendment.

One size does not fit all, and the fact that it tries to do that is insane.
It actually doesn't operate that way, for the most part. Economic and fiscal policy are determined on regional, state, county and municipal levels. HHS, Dept. of Energy, Dept. of Education, EPA, BATFE, DEA, the Fed, etc... also decide, implement and enforce policy on a sub-national level.

But I think the problem is more that people actually though it was a good idea to elect him. Ideally there shouldn't need to be very many requirements, people should be able to tell candidates like trump aren't fit for president.

As opposed to an experienced politician like Obama or someone who came from a political dynasty like Bush? The whole point of presidency is that anybody could be it, the idea that only the highly educated or experienced should become president is a very socialist concept & contradictory to the idea of a democracy since once you put a limit on who becomes president you create a system for unscrupulous people to game & a position for them to hold in perpetuity.

Not only that but illegals will threaten to report themselves to INS if the employer doesn't raise their wages to twenty bucks per hour because the penalty for an illegal is to just get kicked out of the country whereas the penalty for an employer of an illegal immigrant is much more severe.

Hmmm, but what would we call it? Immigration and... something enforcement... HMM....
(/sneed that's ice silly)
In my experience with ICE, they don't go far enough. It's like they want a map, a picture and 5 bucks for gas money to go get the guy.
But seriously, ICE and DHS are failing to keep track of illegals. Maybe they should look at new ways to sniff them out.

I don’t think the point of this bill is to absolve Congress from having to intelligently pass a budget bill, it’s meant more as an emergency check to prevent a government shutdown and federal workers, who are people with families whether you think they’re essential or not, from being used as a threat or weapon in political shit-flinging, by either party.
Even if I did believe this, so what? Any idiot can have a family, and the worst motherfuckers on Earth are people too. No one's giving me a job just because I'm a person that has family boohoo etc. Nor should they.

Yeah what the people panicking about right wing death squads coming for all the poor spics don't seem to realize is there's not really an ICE tipline where you can just call anonymously and say "Das Juden!" and get them to arrest people. You basically have to do the whole investigation yourself before talking to ICE before they're willing to actually look at anything.

OH, I agree they need to do their jobs better. Just that we don't need yet another redundant government agency.

lol stop getting mad

I think that ship might've sailed already.

Just a thought as well, for the people who watched that Sen. Zodiac clip earlier, you notice how he keep harping on the fact that the Dems had approved a larger amount of wall in 2006, yet now are calling it medieval and refusing to fund a smaller portion just to shutdown the government and "OWN THE BLOMHTARDS?"

Do you think that's not going to come up in the upcoming campaigns? That Schumer specifically told the Coast Guard to get fucked? What clearer message could you possibly send that you couldn't give an absolute rat fuck less about your border security when you do something like that?

For all the people screaming about how much of a cuck Trump is now, I feel like you missed every single fuck-up that lays this dead bird right on the front stoop of the DNC. Who's voted to not reopen three times? Who's been running on FUCK BORDERS? Right, the same people who said these things:

“Illegal Immigration is wrong, plain and simple. Until the American people are convinced we will stop future flows of illegal immigration, we will make no progress.” - Schumer, 2009

“We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented and unchecked” - Obama, 2005

“I voted numerous times when I was a senator to spend money to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in. And I do think you have to control your borders.” - Clinton, 2015

All of these guns are loaded and ready for use, and the Dems have...Russia Hysteria and propaganda that's been bedunked.

However, If he rolls in 3 weeks without at least a massive fuck you attached, then I'll probably take a ride on the "wtf are you doing Trump?" train for a bit with the rest of you.

TFW the flame war in the comments is funnier than the topic.

Seriously though, half of this battle is public perception. If people (and by people I mean those who supported the wall in the first place) think that Trump lost by reopening for three weeks, then it llikely becomes a loss regardless of what Trump does next. Maybe it's 5D chess, maybe it's Pelosi being a b*tch, who knows. We've got three weeks to find out what the next step's going to be.

I find it to be quite the pain in the ass when Trump has many options, but people keep telling him to just do a national emergency. It's a terrible fucking idea because the ninth district courts will rule against it and so will Neil Gorsuch because he was against the muslim ban. What Trump needs to do is use public law 85-804(50 US code 1431) it's been amended twice giving the executive branch practically absolute power so congress or the courts can't say boo about it i.e its black letter law its well established and cannot be disputed. "It allows Trump to negotiate and sign contracts on behalf of the federal government as long as they are for national defense."(James Allsup) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn_rzIcSi-0&t=277s Its a good video and it explains it more in depth, but if Trump hadn't buckled like a bitch he probably could have done this hell he can still do it, but the people who keep whispering in his ear are pro-amnesty like Kushner and Graham also he doesn't have as much political capital in the eyes of his base as he used to. I don't want another fuckin Ronald Reagan hell it's partially why we have such issues with immigration as it is. If people could pass this video around on twitter or some shit and spam it to Trump it would be great. Problem is whether or not he will listen.
In reality there is no national immigration emergency and using the imaginary state of emergency to set up a expensive, pointless border wall is an abhorrent misuse of executive power.

Republicans pretend they care so much about "small government principles" but their support of this idea, and of Trump's repeated obstruction of justice, proves they don't care about anything except getting their way before Mueller can get his ass on a plate.

I've never seen so many boilerplate Democrat talking points represented at once.

In reality there is no national immigration emergency
What is the problem of illegal immigration? Why is so much spent on that?

and using the imaginary state of emergency
Imaginary? Any country that fails to protect its borders is in a state of emergency.

to set up a expensive, pointless border wall
Expensive, maybe (although much less so than our annual military budget or any given Democrat pet project). Pointless, no.

The Wall functions as a deterrent to illegal immigration across the US-Mexico border. Saying that it is pointless because it can theoretically be bypassed is like saying windows don't work since you can smash through them.

is an abhorrent misuse of executive power.
No it isn't. One of the main functions of a country is to protect its own borders, oftentimes using its military. One of the main functions of the President is command over the United States Armed Forces.

The President can use a state of emergency to get the US military to build the wall.

Republicans pretend they care so much about "small government principles" but their support of this idea
The fuck does protecting the entire nation's borders have anything to do with "small government principles"?

Last time I checked, illegal immigration is not a "small government" thing, it's an entire nation thing.

and of Trump's repeated obstruction of justice
When?

proves they don't care about anything except getting their way before Mueller can get his ass on a plate.
Oh.

So you're one of those people who believes that Mueller's over two-year-long fishing expedition will actually hurt Trump in the long run.

So I'm going to make this short.

If Mueller's expedition didn't turn up anything after two years, it is extremely unlikely it will turn up some epic impeachment worthy smoking gun now.

If people (and by people I mean those who supported the wall in the first place) think that Trump lost by reopening for three weeks, then it llikely becomes a loss regardless of what Trump does next.
If (and obviously that's an if of unknown quantity at the moment) he gets a wall this will only help him in the eyes of prowall people. If there's at least enough feet of wall to fill a camera panning from left to right him shutting down the government showing a willingness to fight, then three weeks of mercy because he's just that nice, will be a perfectly fine argument for anybody that said "I'm voting for wall guy".

The morals and reasoning are obviously a different and unrelated argument, but limiting things to "how will Trump voters look at this" I think that as long as there's a wall there isn't much they won't overlook.
