GoonerGate was an online slap fight between two factions. “Gooners”, and “Christians”, though neither label is really correct for reasons I’ll explain later. In short, some “Christians” got mad at the recent successful fanservice games coming out of Asia, and got mocked and called out for hypocrisy on Twitter. What was a small drama of no consequence keeps getting brought up again and again. At first due to the “Christian” side refusing to take a L and instead choosing to keep doubling down, and now because the woke games press is mad that they're losing.
If you want an autistic breakdown in video form, this one by ShortFatOtaku is good enough, though contains a lot of filler.
Important OP note.
Due to most of this taking place on Twitter, and me not having an easy or convenient way to find archives, I won’t have archive links. If people have those, I’ll add them to the OP.
The video that launched a thousand tweets.
This was retweeted by Pirat Nation with the question “Is this what gamers want?” with the overwhelming majority being some variant of “Yes.”.
This caused culture war YouTuber DreadRoberts to complain. Calling the game “pornographic”.
This was dumb for many reasons. Not only did people mock him in the replies, but it’s also been pointed out that he supported Stellar Blade, a game with an attractive female lead, just a few months prior.
Soon he was joined by MelonieMac, a former game journo and possible thot (though I’ve not seen evidence of that).
Again, the problem is that MelonieMac is an outspoken supporter of classic Tomb Raider. A game series from the 90s that is arguably more sexual than anything in The First Descendant. Like DreadRoberts, she was mocked and called out for this.
There was also some guy called Trent who got involved, but I never saw this at the time.
And that was it. That was GoonerGate, except it wasn’t. What should have been a flash in the pan part of the culture war keeps going.
After the dust had settled Razorfist decided to weigh in on it. Again, condemning the game as “spiritually caustic” and “degenerate”.
Even if you agree with it, the fact that Razorfist was bragging about his anti-Christian edgelord status in the past.
Pirat Nation got caught lying about a new game, Fallen Feathers. This might be a case of a genuine mistake however and seems to be a big nothing burger.
Including this reply because it's so unhinged.
And at time of writing this OP, woke gaming website The Gamer was seething about the upcoming First Descendant hotsprings DLC.
When you go into more detail into the major players, it’s where things get interesting, and unfortunately, a bit sad.
The instigator of this whole mess. Culture war clickbait YouTuber of little note. He became a Christian after the death of his infant son.
There are a few myths about her related to GoonerGate. I see it said that she was a thot, but I see no evidence of that. I also see the claim that, after GoonerGate, she covered up the cleavage in the life size Lara Croft standee in the background of her videos by putting a jacket on it. But even prior to GoonerGate the jacket was present, and was there as far back as two years ago. Videos prior to that didn't have the statue in the background at all from what I saw.
Something I'm not sure is a myth is the claim her switch to Christianity came after a bad break up with her boyfriend, who cheated on her. Some claim it was on her wedding day. She moved back in with her parents and became religious.
Goonergate in his thread
Edgelord YouTube pundit, political commentator, film reviewer, game reviewer, podcaster. Basically an all round talking head. A son of a preacher who leaned heavily into heavy metal. Used to proudly wear t-shirts of death metal bands featuring pentagams and goats heads, but now is quotingscripture Christian scholars? to his Twitter followers (video below).
Supposedly Trent has little to no interest in games, and latched onto GoonerGate as a way to raise his profile. I know nothing about that either way.
As you’ve no doubt noticed. Most of these are recent converts to the faith. Which will be important soon.
I’ve yet to see a real counter argument to their points. Because every single time, it’s always bringing up some unrelated thing. “No game in ten years!” “He liked Last of Us 2!” “Blood wall!” “Anime avatar!” “The Real Game Awards!” and so on. My favourite is the accusation of “incel”, especially since SmashJT, Grummz, and Rev are married.

TIMELINE
A random Twitter account dropped a clip of The First Descendant, a gatcha game, showing a woman in bikini armour dancing, camera placed in a way to show off her rear. The video that launched a thousand tweets.

Rise up gooner gang, I guess.

THE “CHRISTIAN RIGHT”
DreadRoberts
The instigator of this whole mess. Culture war clickbait YouTuber of little note. He became a Christian after the death of his infant son.
Meloniemac
A streamer and former game journalist. Supposedly well liked. She seems pleasant enough, and while I personally know nothing of her career. What's important here is she's a big fan of 90s Tomb Raider, arguably the first big mainstream game that sold itself on having a sexy protagonist. She ties herself in knots trying to justify how classic Tomb Raider was good but modern games, which in some cases are more tame, are not. There's also this. There are a few myths about her related to GoonerGate. I see it said that she was a thot, but I see no evidence of that. I also see the claim that, after GoonerGate, she covered up the cleavage in the life size Lara Croft standee in the background of her videos by putting a jacket on it. Trent
I don’t know who this guy is, but supposedly he’s big in Christian podcast circles. Any criticism of Trent, no matter how minor, seems to bring Christians out of the woodwork to defend him. He was formally Catholic, but lapsed. He became religious again after some life event he won’t discuss.Supposedly Trent has little to no interest in games, and latched onto GoonerGate as a way to raise his profile. I know nothing about that either way.
Jon Del Arroz
Another I don’t know, and again, supposedly big in Christian anti-woke drama circles. As you’ve no doubt noticed. Most of these are recent converts to the faith. Which will be important soon.
THE “GOONERS”
The Gooner “Girfters”
SmashJT, Asmongold, Grummz, Rev, Side Scrollers, and many more. These are YouTube or Twitter drama people reacting to this situation. I lump them all together because they all basically have the same role. Mocking these people and making videos about the drama.I’ve yet to see a real counter argument to their points. Because every single time, it’s always bringing up some unrelated thing. “No game in ten years!” “He liked Last of Us 2!” “Blood wall!” “Anime avatar!” “The Real Game Awards!” and so on.
