Following the quiet revelation in August that Google was going to stop making Fitbit smartwatches, the company has yet another slap in the face for Fitbit fans, confirming that it will sunset Fitbit.com at the end of September.

Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 3 in August at its Made by Google 2024 event. But the advent of one of the new best smartwatches on the market also heralds the end of an era. Google will never make another Fitbit Sense or Versa model, instead focusing on Fitbit-branded fitness tackers – namely the Inspire, Luxe, and Charge ranges, all of which feature in our list of the best fitness trackers.

While the demise of the Fitbit smartwatch wasn't much of a surprise, it's still a sad ending – and the end of the Fitbit website is just another nail in the coffin.

As spotted by 9to5Google, Fitbit.com is now adorned with a banner that reads "On 10/1 the Fitbit store is moving. Shop Fitbit on Google Store." When you land on Google Store, a new greeting says: "You made it! Google Store is your new home for all things Fitbit. Start shopping below or get help with your Fitbit account here."

What next for Fitbit?

While Google might not be making any more Fitbit smartwatches, the company still has plans for the brand. "We are very committed to Fitbit, and even more importantly to the customers that use and depend on those products and technology," the company told us in August.

Google also praised Fitbit for paving the way for many of the Pixel Watch 3's health and fitness features, which it said owed much to "Fitbit's innovation and ground-breaking fitness advancements." Google says we'll "continue to see new products and innovation from Fitbit," although exactly what that means remains to be seen.

Right now you can still buy both the Fitbit Sense 2 and the Fitbit Versa 4 from Google.com, and Google doesn't seem to be in a hurry to stop selling them. With both devices recently reaching their second birthdays, however, you might want to pick one up sooner rather than later. When asked for comment, Google repeated its previous August statement.

The shilling on display here is incredible. "Buy these products that are google is definitely going to shut down services for before it's too late!".

I was gifted a fitbit a few years ago and despite the rampant sync issues with it, I found it to be useful for a multitude of things other than just checking your heart rate and steps or whatnot. So it's really nice to know that it's probably just gonna be unusable and unrepairable e-waste soon.

Thanks Google, hope that antitrust tears your company into a billion pieces.

Imagine using electronic watches. We're getting close to the mark of the beast territory with technology nowadays.

Fitbits are total garbage. They lock most of your data behind a subscription. Once I got a different tracker (Garmin) I never went back to that cheap fitbit garbage again. Good riddance!

It makes me appreciate old technology more, my grandfather's old ruby watch has been working for longer than I can remember and still tells time perfectly fine, it's probably going to last longer than I will.

That aside, I think I've seen more Fitbits used as gifts people give to eachother rather than something people buy for themselves.

We could said then nothing of value was lost. :story:

I did a fair bit of comparisons when I wanted a fitness watch, not on features but on privacy, ability to extract data, all that stuff. Garmin was the clear choice of Fitbit. It's not perfect but it's better.

I have personally found Fitbit to be a good product and I’ve brought many back to life that seemed dead. Sad to see its fall beginning. One day I want to validate it against another brand. How can you ever know that a given device is accurate?

I used to love my fitbit, but over the past couple of years, and especially the past 6 months, it has gone to shit with terrible updates. If you check out the fitbit community forum, you will see so many people complaining and having issues, yet nothing ever gets solved. I'm starting to believe that conspiracy theory that India is trying to destroy Google and all of its products/services.

I've been researching Apple watches, my mom has one and it looks pretty good, basically seems to be more or less the same as fitbit before the shit updates. Only thing I really don't like is the poor battery life, I charge my fitbit twice a week, while my mom has to charge her Apple watch every single day.

The fitbit I had would continue reading pulse even after you took it off - so I never trusted it's reading. Side by side with my Garmin it was always off by 10 or 20 bpm.

Depending on what you use it for, the Huawei (and Honor, basically the same thing) fitness bands aren't bad and are pretty cheap.
