I've been following Maradonia for years; I was excited enough by the prospect of the movie's actually being released, after I read this thread, that I called Dr. Tesch himself.

He was willing to talk to me when I told him I was a huge Maradonia fan ("We get so many crazy people calling, you have no idea") and told me that the movie was not going to be released, either by Liberty's Motion Pictures or elsewhere, because they had a better business opportunity on the horizon. Then he told me to look up Maradonia on imdB; I found this:

This breaks my heart. We'll never get to see any Maradonia movies even if Herr Tesch gets around to making a goddamn series of them.
 
I should point out that Yifei Liu, while being a decent actress in many chinese film and was in the Forbidden Kingdon wiith Jakie Chan and Jet Li, she hasnt't really broke into western films (edit: that I know of. I didn't bother checking). Releasing the original Maradonia film would damage any chances of getting her.

So, yah, we are never getting any Maradonia film and this 'Mermaid Tale' stuff has got to be linked to the Save Asian Souls nonsense in one way or another. Unless the SAS guy has people willing to fund the film I have no idea how it would actually be made. They are going to try and make Maradonia into Narnia. I'd start to archive all of Glo's 'party girl' antics now. I have a feeling like they are going to start marketing her as a wholesome married Christian woman.

By "a better business opportunity" he means it's box office poison and no one will buy it even for bargain basement prices.
 
For what little it's worth, Gunter is actually making the smarter move: the current movie is not only worthless, it's so poorly executed that it would forever tarnish "the franchise." Trying to do an epic fantasy full of special effects on a shoestring budget was a certain fail. Some producers here in LA made a very cheap, slipshod version of a pretty good exploitation idea, but when they tried to find distribution, the companies said they might buy it, but only if they reshot it from scratch with better actors and production values. The fact the source material is moronic and awful doesn't mean it can't attract some money and talent: people make moronic and awful movies every day. And even the worst movies sometimes make money. I wouldn't buy stock in Team Tesch or bet they actually have anything real lined up, but stranger things have happened.
 
If the Asian version of Maradonia isn't the work of trolls or cool guys, then it's a safe bet that Save Asian Souls is somehow involved in this. And, speaking of which, here is a video of Dr. Richie's that I haven't seen yet. He's holding a statue of the Buddha and talking about the son of god, so I'm guessing he's talking shit on the Buddha and actively trying to turn people away from the faith.

And, oh yeah, in the puppet show, the devil is apparently a gorilla or a chimpanzee or something. Pure awesomeness.

It's an incredible shame. I love shitty movies: Ed Wood, Troll 2, MST3K, etc. Based on the trailers, this one would have been a true classic.

I Just Want to See Attachments –– I agree with you completely. There has to be some way to get the thing released. If we just put our heads together...
 
Has anyone just straight up asked them how much for the film rights? We could agree to some conditions, such as not reselling it to anyone else.

We don't need film rights. Gunther already has a digital version of the film; all we need is for him to sell us a bunch of burnt DVD-Rs. Hell, if we present ourselves as fans of Maradonia, we could probably get a group rate on them.
 
It sounds like Gunter won't release it while the new project is still in play, but the question is, does Gunter really trying to make this new version, or is it a pretense to raise funds for a movie which might a) never get made, allowing the producers to pocket the seed money, or b) get made 0n the cheap, allowing producers to either pocket large sums or pay themselves inflated fees up front. If any chance of getting another version going disappears, maybe he'll reconsider.
