The immediate fun coming down the pipeline isn't in interest rates or housing (that will come later) but rather in food. Ukraine and Russia supply something like a third of the world's wheat and a fifth of all fertilizer. Take the Russian ban on fertilizer exports, mix it with the Ukraine war upending Ukraine's planting season, and we're looking at food shortages in several countries by early fall. Probably not famine-level conditions mind you (at least until the civil unrest kicks off), but possibly enough to start spiking the cost of staple foods we take for granted as suppliers look to take advantage. And that's before considering any effects on North American crops like drought and lack of irrigation water.

No one can predict what exactly is going to happen, but we're gearing up for some very "interesting" times in the next 6 to 12 months.

I can tell you what will happen if there are food shortages. Rationing. And then from the rationing comes the travel restrictions. Carbon credits. Sacrificing for the Common Good

An interesting note is that various currencies are imploding, Japan's Yen is eating shit, Turkish Lira has been dying because of "Erdonomics" which has been accelerating its decline, the Lira has devalued nearly every month since 2014. Its absolutely insane how bad their currency is doing. Even the Euro is accelerating its decade long decline against the USD. I don't really have too much time to look around at all currencies but some of these are absolutely terrible. The further below the pink line (300 day moving average) the worse the currency is doing, some of them are in freefall mode.

The Russian Ruble is somehow doing very strong considering the stress upon it. Norway has a very strong hand right now because of it's sovereign wealth fund and the fact they export shit loads of oil and gas into an inflationary period when commodities are king. I don't really have time to investigate the why and how these currencies are eating shit, likely they are inflating faster than the USD would be my guess. These service economies don't appear to be doing as well as banana republics which trade in commodities, sometimes singular that float over the global inflation crisis.

Which means that it's usually pretty resilient to ephemeral market ups and downs, and also (conversely) that any sudden jump is likely indicative of a systemic issue and not just market whimsy.

The likely reason for the Yen's cratering is the BOJ's commitment to their yield control curve which is forcing continual quantitative easing. It is the biggest story no one is talking about though because the Japs have already approached the Feds for some sort of coordinated currency intervention. That little chat alone emphatically shows the current inflation is serious because the Japs wouldn't be considering intervention if they didn't think an economic crash was likely.

Canadian Dollar and Mexican Peso seem to be stable at the moment, but a lot of these nations are just absolutely eating shit. Canadian Dollar is likely stable for the moment thanks to a combination of a commodities and aggressive interest rate spikes. The latter especially: usually the BOC follows the Feds with negligible 10-25 basis point changes, but they've been signalling major interest rate increases to clamp down on inflation. Combined with the Libs' surprisingly conservative budget this year it suggests the more prescient here too realize a crash is coming and want to minimize the damage.

Doubt there will be much mitigation though; debt levels are too high and people have grown too accustomed to near zero interest rates with far too many living paycheque to paycheque for anything other than a cliff dive.

If you want to look at the last two years there was rationing on eggs, milk, chicken, and toilet paper. Currently there are still rationing on chicken wings and they just started rationing toilet paper. My thoughts are what would a complete rationing look like and I think it will be like WW2 rationing, which would include sugar, so that would preclude the obesity (body positivity) movement. I am not certain the people that control the system want the peasants to lose weight. It is easier to control obese people. So rationing as far as restrictions on caloric intake is still a big 'IF'.

This is sort of the worst part for me. That is they made the general populace hate the idea of self-sufficiency. The idea that you might want to grow and preserve your own food, learn to fix cars and weld, become a capable hunstman and archer and shot, etc, these are all seen as disgusting and low brow and you will never need to know these things because the system will always provide. I've been going to my local supermarkets at different times and it feels like issues with supply are already there even though nothing is being widely reported. Some products where I live seem to be permanently out of stock - most types of pasta, sunflower oil doesn't exist (and most other oils are in short supply), mayonnaise seems to have disappeared (except for that low fat stuff that no one in their right mind wants to eat) and in general shelves seem a lot more sparse than before. I made a point to go around opening when you would think shelves would be freshly stocked and its the same story.

From where I live (nope not doxing myself today lads) the stores have been whispering the idea of item limits on certain items, such as meats, dairy and oils (seed and sunflower oils)
They aren't enforcing it YET, but I do think they are catching on to the fact that, like you said, rationing will eventually kick it.
