I beat the dragon boss in the prologue. Weird af when I didn't know what I was doing. Am at adventure lvl 19 now. I want to get Aloy at 20.

So to get characters it really is the Xenoblade 2 gattcha mechanic but worse? I got Xiangling and Barbara. So I have them, Amber, the ice dude who's name i forget, Lisa, and the maid girl with the big fucking sword and purple hair. Unlocking characters is confusing
Lisa, Amber, Kaeya, Xiangling, and Barbara are basically your only freebies for now. During certain events you can get more handouts (every patch alternates between a free 4* weapon or char. In this patch we're getting the sea-lord claymore, next patch it'll be a character)
Every 10 wishes you're guaranteed a 4-star weapon or character (pity). Theres no difference besides speed between 10-rolls and 10 single pulls
every 90 wishes you're guaranteed a 5-star, but realistically you'll be getting them in the 65-80 range.
The standard banner (blue fates, rightmost tab) has Diluc, Qiqi, Keqing, Jean, Mona, and a handful of 5-star weapons. It also has every 4-star character/weapon. You basically never want to spend primogems on this one since theres no particular rateup and you can just get whatever the fuck, but the game gives you a decent amount of free blue fates
The limited banner (purples, leftmost/default tab) has a 50/50 chance of giving you the 5-star featured on the banner upon hitting 5* pity. You can lose the coinflip and get one of the aforementioned standard banner character, or win the coinflip, get the featured char, and completely reset your pity. You can't get 5* weapons from the limited char banner. You can also get any 4-star character/weapon but are obviously more likely to get the ones featured on the banner. idk what the exact chance is.
The weapon banner is a fucking scam don't even worry about that one (middle tab)

I tried to be as brief as I could but I guess theres a lot to unpack lol. Hopefully I didn't just repeat shit you already knew.

So basically aim for the purple banner
Yes, the purple banner gives you the most control over the characters you might get, so save all your gems and purple fates/pulls for when you really want a certain character.

@Pipi420 already described the rough outline, the thing to the whole gatcha aspect is understanding how it works (looks more complicated than it is, check the details in the banner, they have to legally explain how and when you get stuff) and plan accordingly depending how much you're willing to spend.

every 10th roll you get a guaranteed 4* - 50/50 chance it's one of the the boosted chars or one from the general pool (check the details to see what's in it). if you don't get a boosted char you'll get one of the three boosted chars the next time you hit a 4*; which means you could get the same one every time and never the one you're aiming for.

in the meantime you built up pity for the 5* on the banner till you hit 90 rolls. once you hit it same as before, 50/50 chance it's the banner char or one from the general pool. didn't get the banner char, you'll get it guaranteed the next time. which means you can get the 5* banner char on your 1st roll, or your 180th (hitting pity twice). realistically it will be less, but those are the absolute numbers.

the thing you have to remember is that there is no guarantee to get a specific 4*, and you'll get a 5* sooner or later; worst case you get the 5* sooner than 90 rolls, possibly wasting your guarantee (which means the next banner char is another 180 rolls, good luck if you want it and don't have enough primos) so all you gotta do is calculate how many primogems you have, when to save for a specific char and when to blow them knowing what you'll get.

for example with the current banner you'll get baal raiden shogun, if you absolutely don't want her you have to decide to roll or not, the more you do the more likely you are to get a 5*. so get some 4* and possibly her at some point, or wait till the next banner which will have another featured 5* and another set of three different 4*. as much "fun" it is to blow primos on stuff you'll get more out of the game with some minor planning. and after all, patience is a virtue (plus you already got 4+ chars, level them all but focus on the dps and they'll carry you all the way to the end, unless you want to do abyss you don't really _need_ more chars, they just make stuff easier)

the rest is some currency as another form of pity (doubles give you starglitter you can spend in the shop for more fates (bad deal imo), chars, weapons (eh) or other stuff (waste since you can farm those without starglitter). but be sure to grab the 2x 5 fates from the stardust exchange, those are basically free rolls (refreshes every month). save the rest of the stardust until you need it.

outside of that all you need to consider is how to get primos: don't get fooled by the huge influx at the beginning, after you cleared the map you'll only get 60 per day + event stuff, so do your daily commission and burn your resin (increases your world level and gives you stuff you only can get this way). then do the worldquests first since they give you the biggest chunk of AR exp. maybe buy the welkin pass since it's a pretty good deal. battle pass is a good deal as well considering the stuff you get and resin you save. after that you get into whaling territory.

There is nothing worse than Xenoblade 2 gacha mechanic. Not only because you aren't being locked out of content in a full price game due to pure random chance, but you also aren't limited to a specific character to use with that pull, with a late game twist of one character being able to use every other pull for no cost (so get fucked if you used him for most of the pulls). Also four stars are worth using rather than anything that's not five stars being pure garbage.
Yes I'm still salty.

Also, leaks say next banners are Childe and Hu Tao. Why the fuck Mihoyo tries to push him so hard?

Yeah pretty much. As a new player you can just roll as soon as you get 160 primogems every time but later on you'll probably want to start saving primos like a good goy for upcoming waifus
edit: also yeah like zmot said I totally forgot to mention that if you lose the 50/50 your next 5* is guaranteed to be the banner character, and it transfers between banners.

I'll add my 5 cents. Since everybody explained you the gacha aspect, I'll do some talk about your characters. First off, you don't have that many traditional DD characters, as in the ones that require to press LMB for things to die.
Kaeya maybe, he's one of the somewhat decent free characters, and you'd like to have at least one invested cryo character down the line. Plus with him you can walk on water by using his skill. However, I suggest checking some guides on him, because I've got other cryo character at the beginning and did not used him much.
I absolutely suggest investing in Xianling. She can do ridiculous amounts of damage. But she needs investment, some setup, and she does it with her elemental burst, not by attacking. She might be not the best character for now, but don't forget about her. And don't craft weapons for her, since the recently added fishing will give you a really good spear, albeit it might take long.
Barbara and Noelle(maid) have a somewhat similar utility role. Barbara will heal your characters by using her skill, so you don't have to go back to the statue each time you have a booboo. For doing that she needs almost no investment, and in the future you'd likely drop her from your party, but now she has uses. Also she's good at dealing with pyro shields. For that the exact damage is irrelevant, just the fact that she applies water. Her healing is based on her HP, so just put stuff that boosts HP on her, and, when you get opportunity to level up characters skills, level her skill(one that you use by pushing E) to 6 at most. Just rememebr to use her skill with care around monsters that can apply cryo.
Kinda same with Noelle. Her skill gives you shield, which is good. Far from the best shields in the game, but better than no shield at all. Also it trivializes one of the bosses, if you stack enough defence on her. Its absorbtion scales with her Defence, so do the same as with Barbara. She can do considerable damage, but only with her last constelation, and I would not advise to purposefully roll for her. Also two handed swords breaks ores much faster, than most other things.
Amber is not good, but she has uses in the overworld. Mostly targeted fire on demand. Usefull for solving torch puzzles and destroy shields which don't like fire. Also she has somewhat niche efectiveness against an overworld mob known as a Cicin Mage. These fuckers like to surround themselves with shield after they spend some time in combat. And this shield, unlike others, will constantly zap you if you're near. Trick is, that thing can't hit ambers doll(at least it couldn't 5 month ago), but mob will try to target it, and would just stand near it. So if you see the animation of winding this shield up, just switch to Amber, drop her doll(try dropping it between you and monster, or else it might not switch the aggro) and make some distance. Then just shoot it with Ambers charged attacks, untill shield is down.
Lisa is not good also. At that stage she can be used to deal with water-afflicted monsters, like slimes, because zzaping will stunlock them and would spread between enemies. But in general it's not adviseable to invest in her much.

Main character is an ambiguous question. So far, all the forms are support-oriented. Moreso, each elemental form have separate skills, which have to be leveled separately. But you will use him for the overworld utility. On that note I need to speak about the current character banner. It's kinda decent in the 4 star department. Sara works kinda clunky and she's a support with some potential, but for now she's questionable. Xianling is good, and her 4th constelation makes everything better. However, don't try to roll it right now, because it will make difference in late game. Also don't forget, that there is a way to get one of her in the early stage of the Abyss. Don't try it now, tho, she will always be there.
And there's also Sucrose. She has her uses, but most importantly for now is that she's an anemo character and could be used for the overworld mechanisms that require anemo. Of cource now you have your main character. But when you move to the next region, you'd be able to absorb geo element with him, which would be used to do overworld stuff in that region. However, next region would also have some amount of anemo mechanisms. You can change main character back into anemo, but it would require you to teleport back to the anemo statue and travell back where you left, and then you might run into something that requires his geo skill right around the corner. So having one other anemo character would bring you convenience. Problem is, there are only two four star anemo characters in the game so far, so you're not very likely to get them from the standart pool till it stops being that relevant. However, banner might be a bitch and give you only some of the featured four stars.
Also weapon banner at your stage is a scam. You need characters and you'll get some weapons by rolling character banner.

@Noebel
you can build a pretty chill group with kaeya, lisa (for superconduct), barb (freeze + heal) and filler, even amber works. most content isn't that hard if you keep your chars/talents up and put some leveled artifacts on them. heck for a while I just played with leveled flower + feather. apparently traveler itself isn't half bad either but hardly used it to level companionship on 4 chars.
you won't be able to unga-bunga stuff and possibly have to switch due to elements for some domains, but it also teaches you to not cheese everything.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but Baal might be the worse designed character in the game visual wise and it's worse for being one of the big characters.
She just looks bland. There is no unique design to differentiate her from any mega Japanese bitch you'd see in any anime.
was definitely very disappointed when I saw her design for the first time. I had high expectations for the first female archon, since Venti and Zhongli's designs are so iconic. I'd always preferred the boys over the girls in this game, sure, but she feels so bland compared to a lot of other standard banner characters. Honestly feel like they should've saved Keqing's design and used it for Baal instead, with a few changes to suit Inazuma's setting a bit better. If not that, I was hoping for an outfit more fitting of a shogun. Give her a fancy helmet and big pauldrons like a samurai warlord, could be really cool. I'd even forgive leaving some skin open like her cleavage so she can pull her sword out, anime logic and all

@ZMOT Agree. But some characters give more than others for the same investment. It's important for the low AR players to focus their resources, because their ratio of resource/resin isn't good. I think starting players should concentrate on building characters with more potential.

Cant go wrong with Xiangling. Kaeya and Noelle are ok too

you'd need to get those characters first tho, for overworld stuff the starter chars are perfectly fine. resin is just a matter of time, with 180 each day that's at least 4 bosses, 8 leylines or 8 domains (which could give you trouble depending on the enemy element, worst case just coop), and WL caps progression anyway; BP and level ups give resin as well. use the trash artifacts which you need to get rid of at some point anyway till you can do weekly bosses, then use gladiator/exile dumping the old artifacts into them for 80% exp. outside abyss or whalechecks you can go all the way up to 90 with those.

I leveled kaeya as dps, pair it with barb/lisa/amber (supports don't need to level as much and only need to up certain talents in the beginning) and you got almost everything covered, with amber/xianling farming the cryo regisvine is pretty easy, or anemo hypostasis for anemo mc which doesn't need anything special besides being able to dodge stuff.

Cant go wrong with Xiangling.
requires being able to do 3-3 tho, which can take a bit.

@winterfag
shogun is just a title, there were plenty of it running around in a simple bathrobe.
and compared to the trap twink and lanklet geo ceo she's perfectly fine, not every char needs to be super flashy.

@winterfag
I’d argue the opposite, sometimes character design wise Less is More. Perfect example off had - Sephiroth in FF7, simple design, still iconic to this day. Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts, they added so much extra shit that just doesn’t need to be there.

Besides, its her kit being fairly lackluster compared to the other Archons thats her bigger problem anyway. Sure, Electro is primarily a battery element to charge your Bursts anyway but c’mon...

Alright, I need to ask - how are people having trouble with the new Electro Boss? It’s attack pattern is stupidly easy to dodge, and it’s first half you can easily take no damage by not being in the incredibly obvious AoE’s...

Is there a joke I’m missing, or have people just gotten this shit at vidya?
Manifestation is one of the harder bosses they've released recently, but I agree, it's not that big a deal. I think people might have an issue because it moves very quickly and reactions lack impact because ha ha electro still sucks. (Compare that to melting/vaping any of the cryo or pyro bosses to oblivion so you don't even need to read their attack patterns anymore.) I-frame abuse is still king though, so good burst timing gets you most of the way through and then all you gotta do is dance around its AOEs until its dead.

I like the new electro boss, not sure how I feel about Signora yet since she does some time consuming stuff and the health drain is just annoying rather than a challenge. Last thought on Raidens appearance is that I agree she looks simple, now that I've used her a bunch though the flashiness of her attacks seem like they're the more showy part of her being a 5*. Playing as her it feels really good to be able to cancel out of anything into the burst and I think I prefer her moveset to other spear users, feels much more smooth. This detail also got a laugh out of me.

I didn't have any problem with the electro manifestation. Though the fight dragged a bit more than some other world boss fights it felt earned by the quest that led to it. Heard people had issue with the paper tassle rock puzzles in the quest and I had no problems wiht htat one either till the final one where you couldn't see the rocks and poles at the same time. However, it was easily cheesable by just rotating the 2 rocks till I got the right combo. people apparently give up and use guides for those, can't fault them for it if they want to do it fast and be over with it but the fact they can't even understand the first few is nuts to me.

My new bane in terms of gameplay are those generic floaty small enemies they put everywhere. They're weirdly too tanky to take down quickly. It's a bitch to fight those too cause they keep flying out of range and bow users don't do enough damage to significantly fuck them up. Here I was thinking whopperflowers and the super-armored fatui gunmen were the most irritating normal world enemies to fight, but no it's the little fucking weak wisp bastards.

One final thing, I somehow actually rolled raiden shogun, meaning I now have another event character that interested me. Probably gonna end up grinding the stuff to get her to playable levels sooner or later. People say her design is boring but I like how the electro symbol is just literally worked into nearly everything on her.

What girl are you rollin' your paycheck on this week fellas?

I have been just brute forcing my way into all the quest puzzles, that basement floor tiles quest flew over my head. I dunno if there were any clues or something, so I just trial and error that shit until it was over. I think having Zhong li on my team is making me a caveman. Anyways, the new archon quest was very fun, and I have been enjoying the secondaries too. The electro oceanid is cool to me too, since you can just hit it until it dies without phases bullshit

savin my guarantee and paycheck for eventual ganyu rerun. i'm mega disappointed there's zero fosho leaks about who's the next banners, and i simply refuse to believe childe of all people is getting a rerun before anyone else. we know for sure thoma's coming but no one else, sucks but it's ok

all the seen chars are coming sooner or later, yae miko, furry general + thoma, plus whatever new char they sneak in (there was also a big oni dude and some female companion mentioned in npc dialogs, might confuse it with thoma tho). there's even a slight possibility they're finally doing dendro, because after the last island inazuma is "done" (leaks only had 6), and I highly doubt we'll get almost a year of only temporary filler content - even when they throw in the chasm that's 4-5 patches without new landmass. plus sumeru is the next stop, so they have to do it sooner or later anyway.
they all have to compete with re-runs tho, albedo/ganyu are more than overdue at this point, so they might put them in 2.2 and do the rest 2.3+ or mix it up with 1old/1new to rape wallets for good.

@The Lawgiver
what's worse is that those specter's, despite being "created by high elemental concentration" are not infused like slimes, so you can't even get easy reactions off of them. I didn't mind it that much with my fischl/yanfei exploration combo, but for any ungabunga diluc melee it's gonna be a pain in the ass.

as for leveling just get her to 60, that's when chars don't get oneshot anymore and start getting useful in combat, also unlocks all passives and talents till 6 (afterwards it gets highly expensive and requires weekly boss drops. it's also cheap enough that it only takes 5-7 boss kills to get there depending how lucky you are with drops). you want to do 10 bosses/15 domains for the BP anyway, so just prioritize and go from there. personally I try to level all of them asap so I can use then if needed, weapons and artifacts can be moved around, levels and talents not so much.
did a rough estimate once how much resin you'd need for 60/80 and all talents at 6 (8 for all is a bit over a million in mora alone), but it's been a while. wasn't even that expensive, just timegated since you have to wait for resin to refresh. the worst part are boss gems, but you also get those from the weekly bosses and ironically 2 of them we've been doing for a year drop electro stuff so there should be plenty of surplus. pyro otoh...
