Do I have to pay to get characters? I have:

MC
Amber
Lisa
Xiangling
Aloy
Barbara
Ningguang
Kaeya
Noelle
Kujou Sara

I am Adventure Rank 25. Just did the mission with zhong (the old ladys pot/vase, ballista, etc) now I need to get to 26 to get the next quest but the next main story quwst is I think 28 or 29 rank? When do I unlock the island with the pink haired shrine maiden?
no, you don't need to pay, just play the game enough and you'll have enough for any character you want.

inazuma is unlocked at adventure rank 30 iirc

Honestly it's the same for me, I started since November & it does feel like a chore to me at times. I don't do much more than doing my dailies, my dispatched character rewards, my daily Resin drain, & the occasional events that give freemos.

I may play more if the game let's me play, but the lack of more Resin halts playtime. Honestly, I'm also playing another game which suddenly feels like a chore, even more than Genshin. Seriously, how the fuck does one make a daily reward grind into some wagie presence shit?

But yeah, the game itself doesn't let you play more, that can't be solved until either the refresh time becomes better, or we get a 200 Resin cap.
reminds me of a discussion I had lately. I think the issue is lot of people expect genshin to be their "main" game where they can spend hours each day in it, but since I always played it alongside others and just do my daily shit for 20 minutes I was never really bothered by it (ESO already scratches almost every itch genshin tries to exploit and more). in the end I think even if you could nolife the shit out of it either the progression systems will change (good luck farming artifacts if it's not limited by resin, drop chance for the good stuff will be nerfed hard) or people simply burn out faster, and people who drop a game are unlikely to pick it up again, not to mention people rarely buy shit for a game they don't play. hence the constant push by gatcha games to make you come back to it every day and keep up with it.
missing out on shit I could've gotten if I wasn't was lazy annoys me a lot more than spending 20 minutes each day doing stuff while taking a shit or while cooking food etc., if I ever drop the game I'll probably drop it for good and be done with it - especially knowing all the stuff I missed out on, that's where the gatch-grind works against the devs, but I'm not at that point (yet). outside timed events and stuff that unlocks content you can always do it later if you feel like it (still haven't cleared enkanomiya and like 2/3 of the hangout stuff for example)

How tf to beat the frost dude. I need to do the second round of releasing the shards and he hsd force field over scarlet quartz a chest etc
Tried using Amber but keep dying
Should I use a team of barbara, amber and xiaoling (barb to heal)

Its on the mountain btw
the frost lawachurl at the end of dragonpeak? cheesed the fuck out of it with fishl due to range, making it's shit easier to dodge. that was the point I made her my main.
barb becomes wet, and since they're cryo attacks you'll end up frozen constantly. you could try ning/geo MC/noelle for shield boosted by resonance and heal, amber+xianling for pyro resonance and get rid of the shield (less damage and less mechanics when not infused). either way it's probably gonna be a pain in the ass, but otoh you can always come back later.

you get amber/lisa/kaeya for free, noelle via starter banner, xianling via unlock (finish abyss 3-3). rest is either via banner or every second main event (next patch is a free xinque for example).
everything else comes from banners, which means either grinding and saving primos or opening your wallet if you don't have enough primos or really want a certain char (imo not worth it, there will always be a re-run).
where the FOMO gets you is if you're impatient and greedy. every char will have a re-run, you can't have every char NOW (unless you open you wallet), so plan accordingly and you'll most likely gonna have enough to get the chars that strike your fancy at some point. also helps if you ignore shit like abyss and whale events, primos are usually the first reward so should still be easy enough to get.

as for the banner, skip the weapon banner, that just for whales. standard banner pool is too random so not worth it to buy primos for. exchange the 2x5 wishes in the shop each month, save your starglitter for certain chars that show up in the shop (they're on rotation as well, at least for now), rest is understanding how the pity on the event banner works and if you're willing to get the 5* while rolling for 4* chars. that's pretty much it.

I beat the mountain quest for the lady plus the adventure mission with the purple cube boss and now can rank as usual.

Where do you get the banners? I see the one for Noelle but I already have her.

There's those things you spend in one menu I can see Ningguang and the blue haired book guy. Is it that?

And to level up the abilities in constellations, I saw the gem lady in Montstat has one. Where else can you get them? I noticed Amber and the others have different ones.

You get constelations for getting more of a character from wishing or other things that give you characters, except for the main character. Banners are where you see the Noelle one, just click on differnt pictures on the top. You might see, that those use different wishing thingies. Ones that use purple ones are here for a limited time. One that uses blue thingies is more or less permanent, untill devs decide to change it, which won't happen in the meantime. That's why you can spend blue thingies right as you get them from events and such, but purple thingies you better preserve till there is a character you want. Also, don't spend your primogems on blue ones, since the results are a bloody casino, while on the event banners you have a higher chance to get what's being advertised. Also, don't roll on a banner with weapons, at least for now. Now you need characters.

Alright so you're a clear newcomer, i'll try to explain the basics of gacha to you.

>What it costs to "wish" or roll?

The main resource is primogems and it costs 160 for one roll. You get those from quests, events and 60 from daily quests. They're the most important resource in the game.

>how do i get new people?

The first 4 characters you get are free. Traveler, Amber, Kaeya and Lisa. The game also gives you one Barbara and xiangling for free later.

>How do i roll?

There are 2 types of "roll fuel" and both cost 160 primogems.

The intertwined fate: This is the pinkish fate ball that you almost never get for free. These can only be used on the LIMITED CHARACTER BANNER and WEAPON BANNER. You should only buy this fate.

The aquaint fate: That's the blue starry sphere you can get from battle pass rewards. These can only be used on the BEGINNER BANNER (only 20 rolls) and the STANDARD BANNER. You should never buy this fate.

>What are banners

You find the banners by clicking the wish option in the menu. There are technically 4 banners.

BEGINNER: This banner uses aquaint fates and can only be rolled 20 times. It has a guaranteed noele, is cheaper and the game expects you to roll this first. I dont recommend rolling on this banner since it doesnt have a 5* pity (i'll explain later).

LIMITED: This is a banner for a limited 5* character who will only stay avaible for 3 weeks + increased chance at 3 4*s. This is the banner you should focus on since free 2 play players are better off getting new exclusive and fun characters.

WEAPON: This is a banner for 2 5* weapons that stay avaiable for 3 weeks and higher chance of getting certain weapons. This is not worth rolling unless you're already late in the game and have gems and characters to spare.

STANDARD: This is a banner for five 5* characters and 10 5* weapons that stays avaiable permanently and has no higher chances. This banner is not worth spending primogems because the chances of getting a 5* char/weapon you do NOT want is very high.

>What is pity and how does it work?

When you roll there is 5.1% chance of getting a 4* and 0.6% chance of getting a 5* which is extremely low. Thankfully the game has a "pity system" that guarantees you a 4* after a max of 10 rolls and a 5* at a max of 90 rolls. This is why saving is important, if you want to guarantee a limited 5* character, you better save 90-180 fates.

>wait why 180? What is this 50/50 and guarantee?

When you finally get your 5* on limited banner, there is 50% you DONT GET IT but instead one of the permanent 5*s avaiable on standard banner (Diluc, jean, keqing, mona, qiqi) but if that happens you enter the "guarantee phase" where the next time you get a 5* it has 100% of being the limited banner one. This is carried between banners so dont feel so bad about it.

(Note that the weapon banner has a different guarantee system that doesnt carry between banners so it's made for whales.)

>What are constelations and duplicates?

If you get a duplicate you unlock a constelation that gives that character a new bonus to something. They can range from extremely minimal (barbara reduced skill cd by 15%) to extremely strong and essential for that character to function (sucrose's c1 lets her use her skil twice).

The traveler is the exception, since they're the free starter character, you get constelations via the main story quest or buying it from certain shops. They're not very good tho.

>Should i get 5* character constelations?

NO, getting a 5* takes a lot of gems and you're better off trying to get a new character instead. If you get standard 5* duplicates (lets say 2 dilucs) then you just have to accept it and move on. After you play long enough sure you can go for cons on a favourite character.

tl;dr:

1-Do quests, do events, do dailies. Get primogems, save primogems.
2-Only wish/roll on the limited character banner. I recommend going for a strong and versatile 5* first, someone who can make your life much easier for farming and bosses, like Venti who is coming next patch.
3-Do NOT spend money on anything more than welkin blessing or battle pass, those give way more gems for the price, everything else is a scam. I recommend only buying the pass after you reach level 50 on it, just to make sure.

Out of the characters you have, there are a few okayish comps you can try like for example: Kaeya (main attacker) + Aloy + Traveler + barbara is a functional poverty freeze team. You shouldnt do dragonspine so early but congrats lol.

That's another currency (Starglitter) you will acquire by wishing, for picking up 5* weapons/characters. You can exchange it for more wishes, materials (don't), or a rotating set of weapons/characters. The weapons cycle between two groups every month, whereas the characters come and go. Useful for picking up a character you really want, should they be on rotation and you don't want to wish on a Character Event Wish they're featured on. Given enough time, you will max the constellation of every 4* character as they're much easier to acquire than the 5*s.

On a similar note, the other currency you get by wishing on banners is Stardust. It can be exchanged for materials/mora/exp, but that doesn't matter because the Stardust shop resets every month and you can exchange it for Wishes, which you should do whenever you can. Stockpile primogems and Wishes whenever possible, and spend them only when you're sure you will get what you want.

Advice for new players like ScarJo, invest on the non-domain 4* artifacts before increasing the world rank.

I'd say don't bother with artifact domains at all until AR40 or even better AR45; the purples/golds you'll find from chests, quests and bosses will hold you over until then so long as you pick decent main stats and level them. Focus on character/weapon levels, ascensions and character talents early, and never increase the World Level unless you've very comfortable in combat because if you're struggling at your current World Level the last thing you want to do is make it harder.

You can wish on the Beginner banner if you like, it doesn't build pity but it's slightly more efficient.

You can level up Talents with domain materials, you haven't leveled up enough to do that too much yet but Constellations are from dupe characters.

You can mostly wish for the 5 stars you want, generally Constellations > New Characters if you want to be optimal (Some get massive power spikes at C1/C2 while others don't), but you don't need to play optimally. Don't buy the characters you see in the shop for Starglitter, it's a big waste and you should get them naturally. You can fill out your team with 4 stars for the most part, especially after you get constellations on those.

You'll probably end up wishing for a bit before saving to get some characters, from a meta perspective you should wish for Raiden-probably Ayato-Ayaka given current banners if you want new characters, Venti is a bit of a risk because he generally gets fairly replaceable once you get to late game and Ayato hasn't come out yet.

Venti is pretty awesome still as a utility character for having a skill that allows easy acquisition for out of reach items. Grande Ode isn't too bad a burst despite the height disadvantages and aligns well with Ayaka's burst.
Pair Venti's skill and Zhongli's pillar and climb high buildings in record time !
Generally, Archons ( Venti, Zhongli and Raiden) are pretty decent picks so far.

I got a new character. Xinyan.
My roster is now
MC, Amber, Kaeya, Noelle, Aloy, Lisa, Xiangling, Ningguang, Barbara, Kujou Sara, and now Xinyan.

Currently in Chapter 1, act 3, where you must project the three weapons. (Fuck Childe lmao cheap motherfucker) .

You got the one of the best character designs in the game, but you also got one of the worst characters in the game.

Childe is annoying, but I kinda cheesed it unfairly, I still do it every week, but it's a it harder now.

Which foursome do you think works for most of the game? (I can only imagine the new area with the pink haired shrine maiden will be extremely difficult and frustrating lol)

Keep rolling current banner till you get Bennet. I'd advise Raiden part, because she is more universally useable, than Kokomi. Bennet is a very good character, trust me. Actually, you should aim to get two Bennets, because his first constellation makes things much beter.

Out of your available characters, I would definitely pair Kaeya and Xiangling for damage, Noelle for shields/healing and the fourth for whomever you feel like playing (either Lisa, Barbara if you feel you need more healing, or Traveler). I spent most of the game with the team of Keqing/Yanfei/Diona/Jean, which had minimal difficulties until WL7 at which point Keqing fell off hard. In my opinion so long as you always have a mix of Pyro and Cryo/Hydro in your team, you won't run into anything that you'll be unable to kill (with the sole exception of Fatui because you can't bring enough characters to counter every possible shield, so either swap out characters to match elements needed or kill them before they get their shields up and draw out the fight).

Be thankful you're fighting post-nerf Childe.

Oh god he got nerfed ? Dude was a bitch to kill but thank you Noelle for killing him

For many, he was a very unexpected spike in combat difficulty. I don't know exactly what was changed, but there was a patch dedicated to making the initial fight during the Archon Quest less challenging . When he was first introduced he was essentially a DPS check; given how fast, hard and widespread he hit, either you would outdamage him and win or he'd just murder all of your characters. He still hits hard, but either he doesn't attack as fast/often as he used to or everyone has learned his attack patterns and no longer feels the urge to buff up on food bonuses pre-fight. He was the first fight where I actually used them because oh shit there goes my primary damage dealer in one combo.

The boss fight was added to the game on November 11, 2020. The nerf went out eight days later, and I don't know if there's been any more nerfs since (I don't think there have been).

That said, he's the first boss that feels dangerous. While the Dvalin fight in the Archon Quest was fun, there wasn't really any tension as I had essentially no doubt that I'd win easily. Same goes for the weekly Wolf fight. If you don't mind spoilers, every major boss introduced after Childe can and will fuck you up in short order if you don't play smart. Dvalin/Wolf you can facetank without shields, every other weekly boss will murder you, possibly even with shields.

Man, I've yet to get into Signora & Part 3 of the Raiden Shogun quest. I'm already scared to be not ready enough (all others, I was over-ready for). I can't even do some domains without lowering a bit.

Signora's not so bad as she doesn't do enough damage to nearly oneshot characters, plus most of her attacks are really telegraphed. That said, her gimmick will make you suffer if you ignore it and I imagine she can be rather brutal on Co-op due to everyone naturally gathering in the same spots, which naturally is where she sends her AoE.

As for the Raiden Shogun the first time you fight her she's going to fuck you up; there's no way around it. She's like original Childe on steroids, though the Act 3 fight I believe is either rigged or skewed so heavily in your favor that if you survive long enough you won't lose the fight. Her weekly fight is challenging, and at certain times she'll do massive amounts of damage so you're best off evading and waiting her out. You'll know when. Bring cryo/pyro for reactions to shorten the timer, and if you fight her in co-op with more than two people, you must toggle the shield otherwise she either squadwipes you or the host gets to attempt to finish the battle solo.
