I'll forever hate Tony Khan for giving puro such a bad reputation, if it wasn't for him and those Four Pillows, puro would still be gatekeeped, protected from Twitter and Reddit's awful opinions, nobody gave a fuck if Metzler raved about it back then.

Puro is not perfect by any means but the fact Cornette and co disrespect their wrestlers and history to such a degree now really makes me nauseous they are being labelled historians. It is what it is, with horrible presentation as AEW has even Flair in his prime would appear mediocre.
I hate Tony more for his shitty booking. It's incredible how many start and stop pushes there's been, killing off peoples momentum, losing your biggest star and in my opinion his worst fault pushing the people because they're his friends. The Jaggies are a close second but I'll keep it to only wrassling.

Kenny wrestling that blow up doll and doing the J.O.B. for that little girl is what killed all respect Corny had for Puro.
Which is retarded, it was a cutesy "look at what the grown man is doing for a child in training" thing. The Japanese didn't take it seriously, it was clearly a joke thing on a small card in a tiny building with basically nobody in attendance. But Cornette treats it like it was the Main Event of Raw or something.

Yea, Tiny has nothing to do with how Puro is seen. Anyone who knows anything about Japanese wrestling knows it's just a paycheck for the wrestlers and they are putting in about, 30% effort. Just look at how great Ishii, Suzuki or Shibata's matches and booking have been. Hell, even though Okada is supposedly getting a big push he's just been treading water the past year.

The first (and only) episode of AEW I ever watched happened to be the 200th episode of Dynamite. I wasn't really into it. But the second I saw Penta, I sat up and thought "this guy has it". I haven't really felt that way about a wrestler since Shinsuke debuted in Smackdown back in 2017 (closest is probably Jacob Fatu, he had a great debut). So yeah, I can't wait to see more of this guy! His merch is gonna sell like gangbusters.

Funny you say that about Ishii. I know he’s been a pure darling for years, but I saw him wrestle on a an ROH show years ago vs Bobby Fish and I wasn’t impressed. It was half-assed, and boring AF.

It’s kind of the same issue I’ve had with Hiroshi Tanahashi for years. I’ve seen Toru Yano outwork Tana in matches. Say what you will about 2010s John Cena, but as far as company aces go, that dude always seemed to put effort every time I saw him relative to Tanahashi. But the smarks were always putting Tanahashi over and burying Cena. Which to this day I always thought was bullshit.

Tana and Ishii have the potential to have great matches but laziness and/or injury means they work really fucking slow now and just sort of run through their signature spots.

That's DDT for you. Keep in mind, they're also the same promotion that let Chiitan do a few matches like this one during WrestleMania weekend for example.

Good, Cornette is a retard but hes right about a lot of whats been happening in wrestling outside of the WWE, this indie weirdo bullshit doesnt get over with most wrestling fans, be they casual or hardcore, theres a reason WWE is popular right now and its because they focus on making a good show instead of wrestlers fellating each other in-ring.

Honestly, Jim Cornette is possibly one of the biggest hypocrites in pro wrestling that's still alive today in my opinion. True he's right about some stuff in wrestling but the irony is that decades ago in the territory years in Memphis along with the 90s when he was in Smoky Mountain, most of the things he's approved and booked would've contradicted his talking points on his shoot podcast.

Yeah that’s true, he’s not consistent at all and will mental gymnastic his way to justify SMW

I don't know I grew up in Tennessee, watching SMW. Like the only person to ever do a pile driver was Paul Orndorff. And they worked that into a suspension angle as it was a banned move by the Tennessee Athletic Commission.

You didn't Sunny doing three Canadian Destroyers in a row on an opponent for a kick out on two.

Only time you ever saw blood was on a pay-per-view. You didn't see Buddy Landell (RIP the last great Nature Boy) gigging his own forehead every other matches.

Arguably the most controversial shit was the Gangsta promos. But even then, New Jack didn't even wrestle with a garbage can of shit. He actually wrestled as opposed to just hitting people with weapons.

I'm clearly not getting your argument and if I'm missing something or an example, please let me know. Keep in mind, I'm remembering this from when I was a kid so I could totally be remembering this wrong.

I don't want to make it sound like I agree with Cornette on everything because that sure isn't the truth. The one thing I will give him kudos for, when SMW closed shop, he didn't leave a lot of people holding the bag.

It's such a low bar that is almost never met in this industry.

One of the only consistent things he done was pay all his talent along with the stations that broadcasted the show without any bullshit. That's it. As for my argument for why Jim Cornette is a hypocrite, some of the stuff that was on SMW along with some of the territory stuff back in the day possibly would've been very similar to what DDT and some of the other comedic wrestling promotions were doing today.

I don't recall ever seeing a wrestler take on a blowup doll or a small child. You got a clip or something?

that's because cornette takes wrestling itself way too fucking seriously. i bet somewhere deep down he still thinks its a shoot

And also the entire thing with DDT is that it is a comedy wrestling promotion. It's like watching CMLL and complaining about all the Mexican guys doing spinny shit.

Cornette is a whiny old cunt that the business has long passed by.

Corny’s a decent enough wrestling historian, and he has some fun stories from his time on the road that’re entertaining, but once you get to the Mid/Late 90’s and audience tastes change, the business speeds right by him.

He’s good for stories, but his opinion on any wrestling this side of the millennium should be taken with a lot of salt.

Booking past their prime foreign wrestlers shouldn't be done by an amateur who thinks this is a general manager simulation videogame with infinite money cheat. Khan does the minimum effort to protect their weaknesses.

And Cornette gets legit upset when names like Kobashi or Misawa are mentioned as the best from a specific year. Those two are an extension of Baba, he may think highly of Baba and Inoki but it's always in relation to his friends or guys he admires like Dynamite Kid, never on their own.
