There is nothing on the weekly TV worth seeing live. It's being booked like 1980s WWF where they build to a handful of shows as opposed to Attitude era crash TV where important stuff happens every week.

This hurts my soul to read... having a weekly combat sports show on local TV was a huge cornerstone of my childhood and parts of my early adolescence. We were always so hype to catch a kickboxing match on TV if we could, hell even UFC from time to time. Thursday Night Smackdown, however, was my fucking bread and butter. It was that one show where everyone in my dysfunctional ass family could universally agree to watch. In a time before kids became aware of how rasslin' is staged, wrestling was like the talk of the school cafeteria and the playground. Hell, even after we learned about kayfabe, we still enjoyed the fuck out of the PS2 games. SmackDown: Here Comes the Pain, along with the entire SVR series until ~2008 were basically what made all the boys get together after school and waste time playing for hours on end.

All I want is a weekly combat sports show that's enthralling to watch and can almost make me forget it's all staged. What else is there now?

• Lucha Underground got shitcanned because of shitty contractual practises and all their talent jumping ship to AEW
• AEW was really fucking fun to watch... until Tony Khan decided to outdo Eric Bischoff in the "ruining a promising wrestling promotion" speedrun.
• Ring of Honour was fucking fantastic and had great tie-in PPVs and events with NJPW. Then COVID happened, Sinclair lost tons of money, and then they sold ROH to Tony Khan.

Then again, I can only be so harsh. There are still some diamonds in the rough.

• Impact was always "bonehurt WWE" in my book, but that stretch from 2003-2008ish when it was on SpikeTV is a core memory.
  • Dixie Carter's stench will always loom over it, but I'm happy to know it's still around despite a decade plus of mediocrity. I certainly wouldn't want to watch it weekly, but hey!
• I know very little about the revived NWA, except that I have to download the fucking CW app instead of watching it on local fucking TV.
• MLW is promising, I've watched portions of Azteca Underground, and it's satisfying that itch Lucha Underground left behind... but I don't wanna get my hopes too high
• EDIT: I'd love to keep up with NJPW if I was learning 日本語 instead of 中文. If they ever make a legal stream available with English subtitles, I'd gladly fork over the cash to give it a chance.

Rhea Ripley's entire gimmick is that she's softcore femdom Chyna while Dominik Mysterio plays her milquetoast simp Eddie Guerrero.

Their earlier matches were fun to watch and even kinda charming, but like.... Eddie and Chyna gave me legit cheesy feel-good telenovela vibes. I felt the pain in Chyna's voice when she said Eddie hurt her. I cried with Eddie when he tried his damndest to make it up to her. It was stupid, it was hackneyed, but damn it... it was fun.

Dominik and Rhea don't scratch that itch whatsoever. They just make me feel like I'm watching softcore femdom porn and weird me out with how both Dominik and Rhea post their IRL partners on social media while doing this aggressive raunchy shit on TV.

What happened to class? Decorum? General fucking lip service to kayfabe?

rehashing last year's ROH hasn't been surpassed, unless CMLL is booking some guys to do CMLL things, or LA Park is booking himself to do LA Park things
either way MLW is an obstruction, not a promotion

I thought they were pretty good back when they had Teddy Hart's Hart Foundation, MJF, Mance Warner, Alex Hammerstone, Contra Unit, etc around 2018-2019. I genuinely thought at one point they could grow into what TNA was, and it had a real Pre-Spike TV TNA vibe with a some lucha influence sprinkled in. However, AEW's launch hoovered up a lot of the good talent, and then it seemed like they started panicking and trying to lock people down and then they just spiraled during the pandemic.

I always thought wrestling died when CM Punk became some kind of revered gold standard for new wrasslers. But after watching this, I think it might have actually been when Triple H was allowed to cut puerile twenty-minute promos every single show.

Jacob and Tama didn’t work or look good aesthetically. It looked like a typical WWE thrown together tag team. Fatu was always supposed to be a singles wrestler/heater for the group while G.O.D are the tag team and Solo is the leader. Same thing as the old bloodline where Solo was the heater and Usos were the tag team.
Honestly I don’t remember Tonga Loa being this bad back in New Japan Jesus Christ. He’s a SEVEN time IWGP tag team champ and 3 time NEVER Openweight 6 man champ. I’ve never seen someone get WORSE at wrestling like this.
