Man, I bought The Captain Toad and Yoshi games for the switch, used, at about 25-28 bucks a pop. I haven't spent a whole lot of time with either, but they both seem fun. Thinking of grabbing Arms and Splatoon 2 when they have a price drop on the used market to around 30 bucks-ish.

In as much as I enjoy Nintendo franchises in general, I do admit that it seems that only Mario/Zelda/Pokemon have any weight as AAA franchises. The rest are kinda just B listers that occupy a large niche like the various RPGs or semi-regular entries in classic series (Xenoblade, FE for the former. Metroid, Kirby for the latter), crossovers/spinoffs (Smash, Mario Kart), tangentially related to the big 3 in some way (Yoshi, DK), or just have games that are gimmicks for a generation. (Wii sports and co., Pushmo)

Hell, the recent Kirby game on the switch just feels like a rehash of the return to dreamland game we got for the Wii. You know, the one with super moves that felt kinda generic? Yoshi's crafted world is a fun collectathon, but it's probably going to fade away as the whole "Craft Yoshi" theme feels like a marketing gimmick for amiibo.

I'd love for a new Starfox or F-Zero as well, however I'm fine with just replaying F-Zero GX and the possibility of a port for that. Starfox just kinda has a Starlink exclusive crossover for the switch, which isn't bad. Granted that starlink itself goes on sale semi-regularly on the eshop or can be bought used pretty cheap. So all you'd need is 10 bucks for the starfox DLC and bam, you got the new starfox game.

I mean Starlink's saving grace is the Starfox stuff, right? Not like the game sold that well on other systems anyways. You just know that they made starfox toys to life shit for it just to sell.

I am surprised this forum does not have a major thread. I looked back at the past, and threads based on Nintendo seem to only last a maximum of like 4 pages. How is it that a thread based on fans, gains more traction than a general thread?

Please do not. Those games are super half-baked and are the Nintendo equivalent of Call of Duty. If you need a good 2D platformer, give it to Retro or Ubisoft as Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and Rayman Legends are superior in every way.

Wasn't aware, but I suppose we can fill the time with speculation and recommendations.

I'm looking at the list of JRPGS for the switch and there's a shitload. 70% of them seem to be ports of older good to decent ones. However, DQ11 DE, 3 Houses, Xenoblade 1+2, and Octopath Traveller seem to be the general standouts. Atelier Ryza as well.

So, we somehow only have one Tales of. . . jrpg ported to switch, what're the candidates for the next port from that franchise?

Trails of Cold Steel has gotten universal praise as well. Speaking of which, I recently went through and wrote short reviews for all of my Switch games and here it is!

Baba is You	Digital	No	No	Iffy	Baba is You is a game that makes me, a very intelligent man, feel like a very unintelligent man. This game quickly outpaced my mental capacity and forced me to give up. I respect it but did not get my money's worth.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker	Physical	No	No	No	Captain Toad is a Wii U port that, in a few of its levels, really shows it. The game is okay but I dropped it to play more interesting things and have not gone back. Probably never will.
Collection of Mana	Both	Yes	Yes	Yes	Collection of Mana is a great collection of great games. FFA must be one of the finest games to grace the green tinted screens of the original Gameboy and SoM is the SNES (with special chips) being pushed to its limit. Both are highly enjoyable. I still have the third game to play, but already got my money's worth. My lone complaint is that they released the digital version first, causing me to buy both.
Divinity Original Sin II: Definitive Edition	Physical	No	No	No	DOS2 is probably a great game on PC but I could not stomach the Switch version of the PC-centric controls and gave up in the first area. If you want this game, be sure to get the PC version.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition	Physical	Yes	No	Yes	DQXI is a great game with amazing character (and enemy!) design. I love the way the map, which you re-explore several times, continues to open up in ways you did not fully expect. What an epic game, I didn't get to the end but got pretty close, having put 90 hours in I more than got my dollar an hour.
Dragon Quest Builders 2	Physical	Yes	Yes	Yes	DQB2 is a great Minecraft clone which legitimately adds to the formula. I loved the story progression, building a farm for my friends to live in, the classic DQ references and the unexpected side adventures you go on along the way. That said, the main story is telegraphed too blatantly to really hit and many of the characters just Will. Not. Stop. Talking. Also I wish you could build more rooms in your maps. Moto moto! Really makes the Switch chug too, they seemingly did not downport this from PS4 at all.
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen	Physical	Yes	No	No	I've heard that DD is getting a television adaption and I cannot fathom why, two weeks after playing it I have forgotten the name of every character. Setting aside the barren story, the world is not much either. If it had been, say, twice as big I could see myself reccomending the game but as is I cannot. Though I stopped halfway through the story, I explored all of the map and did not find much of note. Oh, and one thing to key back on, movement is painfully slow and a good deal of the side quests are escort missions.
Ittle Dew 2	Both	No	No	Yes	ID2 is such a good game that it makes older 2D Zelda titles hard to go back to. It plonks you down in a creative world, lets you explore it in any order and gives you legitimately rewarding puzzles despite (or because of?) the limited actions you can take. Though I did not beat this game, it was not through lack of trying, the boss battles are just that hard.
NES Online- The Adventures of Lolo	Digital	N/A	Yes	Yes	One of the game series made by HAL before they became "the Kirby guys", this puzzle platformer remains very playable today. I did use an online guide a few times. Its good.
Nintendo Labo Variety Kit	Physical	DNP	DNP	DNP	Purchased in fear that they will start increasing in value.
Nintendo Labo Robot Kit	Physical	DNP	DNP	DNP	Purchased in fear that they will start increasing in value.
Nintendo Labo Vehicle Kit	Physical	DNP	DNP	DNP	Purchased in fear that they will start increasing in value. If I were to give one of the kits a try, it would be this one, as I have heard it’s the most gamey.
Nintendo Labo VR Kit	Physical	DNP	DNP	DNP	Purchased in fear that they will start increasing in value.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild	Physical	Yes	Yes	Yes	The game that sold the Switch and (maybe) saved Nintendo's console business. It lives up to the hype.
L.A. Noire	Physical	DNP	DNP	DNP	I played this game on PC and would recommend it as a one of a kind experience, though the open map feels barren outside of mission sequences. Its hard to see why they needed an online download for a 360 game, they clearly didn't try too hard with the port.
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch	Physical	No	No	No	I had high hopes for this game but they were dashed. The gameplay was not enjoyable and even the Miyazaki animation was extremely choppy. The Switch has way better JRPGs, some of which are on this list even- play those instead.
Octopath Traveller	Physical	Yes	No	No	Octopath Traveller has alot going for it but not enough to make up for the war of attrition battle system, lack of character interaction outside of main quests and a few other classic JRPG aspects that should have been left back on the SNES and PS1. Of particular (negative) note are Therion's purple chests, a game mechanic straight out of DK64. Skip this game.
Okami HD	Both	Yes	Yes	Yes	Released digitally world-wide and physically in Japan, I did eventually have to complete my collection and get both. The game might not be an equal to Zelda (a series it is constantly compared to) but it is something great in its own right. If you like action platformers, Japanese culture or just want to go on an adventure, this is a good choice.
Picross S	Digital	No	No	Iffy	The puzzling is worthwhile, but crosswords and kenkens can be found for free in any number of places online. I do not think I could recommend paying money for this.
Pokemon Sword and Shield	Physical	Yes/No	Yes	Iffy	I brought the combo pack, thinking it might end up being worth something someday. So did a million other people so I guess that bet is lost. While the game is sloppy in many ways, the general Pokemon formula is as strong as ever and I did get something like 70 or 80 hours out of it, leveling up my team and catching more 'mons. I'd reccomend any mainline Pokemon game, to be honest, so I guess that goes for this one too.
Return of the Obra Dinn	Digital	No	Yes	Yes	Lacking a physical release I was forced to go digital for this game. It is a once in a life-time experience though I did end up getting stuck halfway through and have to start guessing. If you like puzzlers you owe it to yourself to give this one a go.
Snake Pass	Digital	No	No	No	Snake Pass is a gimmick game who's main gimmick is the difficulty of the controls (you control a snake and move by slithering and scrunching.) It got old quick and I did not enjoy the many falls to death.
SNES Online Adventure Island	Digital	N/A	No	No	Adventure Island is no Donkey Kong Country, that’s for sure. Its more of a Lion King. As to reccomends, well, its free so all you will lose is your time.
SNES Online The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past	Digital	N/A	No	No	LttP is regarded by many as the greatest game of all time. Its okay, but we've come a long way since the early 90s- Ittle Dew 2 styles on this game relentlessly. I put it down halfway through and did not look back.
SNES Online Puyo Puyo Tsu	Digital	N/A	No	Iffy	Puyo Puyo is hard, I got through the first two or three levels of the tower with save states but this game beat me down with the cold heart of an arcade quarter-muncher. Its fun puzzling, but I wish I was able to make more progress.
Stardew Valley	Digital	Yes	No	Yes	Stardew Valley is a time vampire. There are people out there who have sunk 100s of hours into this rural life simulator, I am not one of them but did definitely get my money's worth with this love letter to old school Harvest Moon. Abigail is wifu for lifu.
Star Link The Battle for Atlas	Physical	DNP	DNP	DNP	Much like Arlo, I brought this due to how cheap it was. Now it lives on my shelf, snug in its box. TTL was a mistake.
Super Mario Odyssey	Physical	No	Yes	Yes	Despite only putting 40 hours into this game on its week of release, I can remember all of the levels vividly two years later. A master-class in gaming. I didn't want to use a guide to get all the moons and couldn't beat Dark Side. What a great game, right up there with BotW.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate	Physical	Yes	N/A	Yes	Everyone is here! Smash is, from a purely mechanical standpoint, the greatest game of a great game series. That said, I miss SSE, miss trophies, feel the shield lags too much and did not spend all that much time playing it. Would still recommend though. Also, they nerfed Mr. G&W.
The Touryst	Digital	No	Yes	No	Shinen is known for making graphically impressive games, but I feel they forgot to make the graphics good in this game, regardless of how technically adept they are. The ocean often enough looks like mid 2000s bloom and blur to me, even if thats not what it is. The gameplay is also not much to write home about. I beat the game only having to look up help once, and even then did not get my dollar an hour. I cannot reccomend the game, though I bet you could do a lot worse.
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt Complete Edition	Physical	Yes	Yes	Yes	Great game, even better if you don't play it on Switch, though let me tell you spending a minute plus on the loading screens after every death sure is a real incentive to git gud.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2	Physical	Yes	Yes	Yes	I put 200 hours into this game. This forms a true 2017 triforce with BotW and Odyssey. Plotwise it starts as a bog-standard JRPG where you date your sword but becomes a lot more than that. The game also has a ton of quality of life features that you will grow to notice over time. Two negatives are that the NPCs seem almost too nice, the world is on the brink of war but all of the NPCs sound like International Politics majors ("We need to win but I am sure the other side has some sort of valid point" etc.) -most of those people should, in theory, just mindlessly hate their opponents- and the game is miserable at explaining the battle system, its something you just have to learn by yourself after a number of hours of play.
Yoku's Island Express	Physical	Yes?	Yes	Yes	Yoku's Island Express is the pinballvania game that stands alone, even three/four years later, as the world's only pinballvania game. I recommend it for that reason alone though be forewarned, the pinball physics are unrealistic and the game is extremely easy except for one section, which is frustratingly difficult.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2	Physical	Yes	Yes	Yes	I put 200 hours into this game. This forms a true 2017 triforce with BotW and Odyssey. Plotwise it starts as a bog-standard JRPG where you date your sword but becomes a lot more than that. The game also has a ton of quality of life features that you will grow to notice over time. Two negatives are that the NPCs seem almost too nice, the world is on the brink of war but all of the NPCs sound like International Politics majors ("We need to win but I am sure the other side has some sort of valid point" etc.) -most of those people should, in theory, just mindlessly hate their opponents- and the game is miserable at explaining the battle system, its something you just have to learn by yourself after a number of hours of play.
Yoku's Island Express	Physical	Yes?	Yes	Yes	Yoku's Island Express is the pinballvania game that stands alone, even three/four years later, as the world's only pinballvania game. I recommend it for that reason alone though be forewarned, the pinball physics are unrealistic and the game is extremely easy except for one section, which is frustratingly difficult.

I bought all the pokemon stuff, but that's mainly because I'm a sucker for those. t's a guilty pleasure.

I don't have Luigi's Mansion or Splatoon 2 just yet. Probably because no price drop just yet. Any predictions on a Nintendo Selects lineup for the Switch? I can potentially see FE 3 Houses being on there eventually.

Xenoblade 2 and FE 3 Houses are a big maybe since I don't recall jrpgs being nintendo selects. IDK about pokemon bc there's never been a selects.

As for 3rd party shit. Crash Team Racing, Wonderful 101, and maaaaayyyyybbbbbeeeee Bayonetta 1+2. I could see Astral chain as well lmao.
Oh and don't forget about Snack World, that dungeon crawler that debuted like last december to just be called `eh it's alright`. It's priced as a AAA game. Also, Starlink sounds like a contender since the only reason you'd ever want to play it is for the Starfox stuff.

Going into the games I have for Switch, I though I might make some suggestions for future adopters.

I think I will rank the games on a general scale of buy or not, assuming one has never played of course.

Spoiler: Long list of games

New Super Mario Bros. U
I do not own the game, but I did for Wii U and I can easily say it is not worth the money. These games are just generic and only last a while. The game is in no way broken, but the lack of any ambition in a market of way better platformers leaves me mad that these games do so well. I want to say U is the best of the franchise, but I honestly prefer Wii and DS. Just stay away from the last two entries.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
I would avoid this one as well. There is definitely some fun to it, but the game becomes a level grind very quickly. It just lacks the pick up and play nature of the previous two titles as unlike those each character must be individually leveled up, not a team level up. This creates restrictions on accessibility as you will not be able to play as a good bulk of the cast for most of the game as they will be way underpowered. The new rifts seem fun, but have the same grind issue with minimal rewards.

Mario Tennis Aces
It is undercooked. It has the best gameplay of the series, but is hindered by Nintendo making it a service. The character roster is pretty good now, but the activities are not there. The story mode is basic and should have let the player swap out characters. Side activities were locked to online for awhile, making them not fun. There is some value, but it is definitely on the lesser scale.

LABO 1+2+3 (Never got VR)
This is a price drop title. The builds are actually a lot of fun, but the games do not utilize them as well as some may expect. If you are to get one, then go for one as it seems the most well put together. Otherwise avoid the titles.

Mario Maker 2
Personally never got into it. I think the charm and effort put into the original Maker on Wii U is gone. The lack of Amiibo costumes is down-right inexcusable and makes the game incredibly bare bones as we are now missing out on the amazing crossovers of 1, where we had Hello Kitty and random anime. Nintendo also barely updates it unlike the first, so I think a good bulk of the player base dropped off quickly. It is rather side as the Nintendo community was hyping this title up as the ultimate streamer game, only for no one to care a day after release. There are some great levels worth checking out, but this is definitely a soulless feeling game.

Kirby Star Allies
I had fun. I love Kirby, so even though this was definitely a weaker title in the franchise, it is still a fun play through. This game was held back by Nintendo’s service model of releasing content after release and it definitely hurt the title. Many dropped off as Kirby is not a game made for that. As of right now though, there is a good amount of content, so I say it is worth a sale purchase at least.

Super BomberMan R
The game was undercooked at launch, we waited a year, now it is great. Tons of content, cool crossovers, and a bit of extra story content. The game did quite a 180 and I recommend the title to anyone interested. While the graphics are not the best, the game did get quite a bit of care put into it to justify a purchase.

MegaMan 11
Fun return for MegaMan. If you are looking for a decent 2D platformer or a new MegaMan game, here you go.

Sonic Forces
This game is plagued with rushed development time, but I cannot say I did not have fun. This is a great sale buy, the character customization is fun and the Sonic levels are decent. Classic Sonic is awful though.

Pokken Tournament DX
Fun fighting game. It is a mix of 2D and arena combat. As a basic fighting game, it is fun. I also love the extras and challenges.

Pokemon Sword & Shield + Go
Avoid these titles unless you are a hardcore fan. They are really rushed, and have very little to do. Reviews for these games say more than I ever could.

The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening
This game is a sale title. It was priced way to high. The game is fine gameplay wise, although I have heard of some frame rate issues, but there is very little here. It is a GameBoy game in HD.

Super Mario Party
It has the best mode River Rafters! The game is on the sale side. There are barely any boards, but the mini-games are fun and the character roster is huge. Everything but classic Mario Party was good to me.

Breath of The Wild + Mario Odyssey
Instant buys! They are very good open-world titles with tons to do and collect. Both games were a breath of fresh air to their series and are deserving of their 10/10 status. I have seen many go off an Mario now, so let me say this. Odyssey is not a successor to 64. It definitely falls more inline with BOTW in structure. BOTW has shrines that bring out the puzzle aspect of Zelda, while Mario has challenge rooms for platforming. Mario has been gifted with the smoothest movement, but it is for exploration over giant platforming challenges.

Fire Emblem Three Houses
The gameplay is very average, but the customization is incredible. The Monestary is a fun location to explore and chat with students around. As for story, it is all over the place. I suggest Blue Lions and Golden Deer as they are the least boring and easy to understand narratives. Everything regarding Edelgard is a convoluted mess. The character writing is what elevates the story though. Three Houses has some of the best in the series, especially within the Blue Lions. You grow to really care for your individual students. I highly recommend this one as it is a great first-timer game.

Luigi’s Mansion 3
Best animations for Mario ever! This game is beautiful, and gameplay is smooth and fast paced. The very ing locations are great to explore and the bosses have a good amount of personality. Next-Level really went above and beyond in making the game fantastic, so definitely a buy rating.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
It is a 10/10 MMO styled game for a reason. Great gameplay, story, and characters. I cannot do the game justice.

Splatoon 2
Instant buy! The game is great for online and the story mode is as good as the previous. The DLC is also amazing, adding tons of challenges. If you liked Splatoon 1, then Splatoon 2 is better.

ARMS
Give it a chance. The title had tons of passion put in and more content than it is given credit for. I feel like people overly bash it because it got stuck using the terrible Splatoon model. Look Nintendo, the model works for Splatoon and ACNL because of the types of games they are, stop shoving it in every title! Back on track, the character designs are fantastic, the gameplay is easy to grasp, and there is fun to ARMS combinations. Side modes are also fun, like Volleyball and Basketball.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate
This is a super vanilla Smash title that has a pretty weak single player campaign and lacks much of Brawl and prior titles’ charm. No trophies, masterpieces, no history cataloging, etc.. In saying this, the core Smash is great with the best selection of characters and stages in the series. Classic mode is incredible now as it is themed for each character. If you want vanilla Smash, here you go. If you want a Subspace or even Smash Run, look elsewhere. This title is the absolute core Smash with no side activities. I would say it is a buy though. It is a great way to cap the series off and has so many characters it would be hard to pass up.

LEGO DC Super Villains
A fantastic LEGO title with more personality than I would have expected. The new graffiti style has this insane charm to it. The voice cast is incredible getting tons of iconic DC voices to reprise roles, such as Tara Strong, Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, and Clancy Brown. The cast of DC characters is also a lot more streamlined compared to the LEGO Batman titles. There is a lot less Batman than usual, and instead we get tons of Flash and other properties to really have the biggest players of DC steal the show. Definitely a must play for any DC fan!

LEGO City Undercover
I owned the game for Wii U. Great title with a unique charm and one of the few original LEGO titles. It feels like a toned down GTA, and is worth a play through.

Sonic Mania
If you like Classic Sonic titles, than instant buy. It is a huge nostalgia trip with great level design.

Go Vacation
Wii sports clone ported to Switch. It is great fun if you want to return to the simple Wii days. A fun open world and tons of activities. Just a warning though, apparently the original Wii version has more content, but the Switch version is said to have better draw distance.

Rayman Legend + Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Excellent 2D platformers filled with perfect level design and plenty of originality. Please play these before any other 2D platformer on Switch, they need the attention.

Mario + Rabbids
A fun and easy to understand tactics game with plenty of heart and comedy. It is a strange crossover, but a must buy for Switch owners. I have never seen Mario and crew so beautifully animated outside of Next-Level, and the Rabbids are very tolerable compared to the usual.

Catherine Full Body
A mature narrative that handles itself well. The puzzle gameplay is unique and super addictive. Play this one if you have the chance.

CTR Nitro Fueled
Best Kart racer on Switch! It is loaded with content and the mechanics are fun to use and master. It is definitely more skill based, but once you get a hang of it, you will love blazing through levels.

Team Sonic Racing
I find the gameplay more fun than Mario Kart as it is faster, more trick-based, and has smoother turns. The level design and music are as fantastic as ever and the new team mechanics are interesting in a good way. This game in no way competes with the craziness of Sega Transformed as it lacks the characters and evolving stages, but as a simple Sonic kart racer, it is good. The story mode is kinda better than Transformed too. No more tank battles and very minimal traffic challenges.

Yoshi’s Crafted World
It is a decent 2D platformer. It hovers in the middle of generic like Kirby and great. The game looks great and levels are fun to explore, but it is very easy and has way to much backtracking as each levels seems to feel the need to be played 3 times. If you want a relaxing platformer, this is my ultimate recommendation.

Fire Emblem + Hyrule Warriors
I love these games. They are full of fan service and crazy combat. I prefer FE though, as characters are way more balanced.

IDK if I should buy Torna as a physical copy or not given it's a weird DLC thing that's standalone and even has a separate physical release and doesn't require you to own XB2. I get the vibe that you'd enjoy YS 8 though.

I'm salty about the Langrisser remakes being objectively mediocre. However, it's likely to nosedive in price on a sale.

I'll get around to autistically giving my thoughts on my switch library. However, I will say that I tend to enjoy Mariokart 8 Deluxe more than Team Sonic Racing for a more casual setting. Both are still fine kart racers. I haven't bought CTR yet but I'll totally pick up the physical release sometime. I also have Horizon Chase Turbo, which is an excellent little arcade racer on the switch and is pretty cheap. There's not much to say about it beyond the fact that it's entirely worth a pickup on sale for the content they toss in it. It's essentially a love letter to old school racers from the 80s, 90s, and early 00s and is packed full of content.

The game is very Japanese, the beginning having a lot of anime tropes like a Tsundere, underaged-looking maid girl, and huge amounts of fan service. If you like that or can get past it, it sounds like a great title. I will probably try it after playing Definitive Edition.

Three Houses apparently makes numerous references to FE4, one of which is Dagda and Brigid being locations. I think the darker story also hints at FE4. If the things holding FE4 back are the incest and deaths, than Three Houses essentially already did all, so I cannot see an issue. The real quest is what will FE5 be. Will it be mixed in to the FE4 remake, or be its own thing?

I wonder what after Switch prices will go for. The game seems like it would not have sold well and I doubt many will have copies to sell later on.


Three Houses apparently makes numerous references to FE4, one of which is Dagda and Brigid being locations. I think the darker story also hints at FE4. If the things holding FE4 back are the incest and deaths, than Three Houses essentially already did all, so I cannot see an issue. The real quest is what will FE5 be. Will it be mixed in to the FE4 remake, or be its own thing?

Honestly I'm probably picking up Sushi Strikers from a gamestop when this covid stuff settles down. Might also pick up the megaman Zero collection too.
I'm curious about the Bloodstained games but I hear they have some issues on the switch. IIRC, the Super Robot Wars game for the switch is in english, but it's not published in NA. I might grab it after this covid lockdown is over if it dips to under 70 bucks used.

Dagda and Brigid are just Celtic names though. I'll give you that it's entirely possible that Intelligent Systems just decided to reuse them. Will an FE4 remake go full on with mentioning the child hunts and shit that Julius allowed? I'd even like it to introduce some fe5 characters that were relevant enough as playable. Granted that'd probably be extremely limited and would maybe be like 10-12 extra playable ones at most and maybe 3-4 more enemies that pop up.

I honestly do wish nintendo had a VC for the switch. That's my sole complaint, but sega/konami/capcom pump out their collections and nintendo online will eventually have every major snes/nes title. It's a shame about no n64 ports though. Or GBA. Or NDS.

Rereleasing the Wii U games onto nintendo seems solid enough, but I wonder when they'll run out of them.
