This was why the draft is so important as it made almost all of society having "skin in the game" when deciding whether to go to war or not. Just as equally important, the draft is essential in delaying society from splintering off into non military castes and the military into into its own caste.
A volunteer force that is beyond criticism by most of the public because they view military service as the ultimate sacrifice has made a state within a state. The military isn't alone in this phenomena, with US intelligence becoming the same thing. This isn't healthy for American democracy because you essentially create a hierarchy caste above the general public and its being used a bonafide credential for the next generation of politicians, predominantly on the right whereas the left is using former intelligence agency experience because somehow the CIA and FBI are the good guys now for them. I think its worse with the intelligence agencies because pretty much anyone who isn't retarded and doesn't have a criminal record can join the military but intelligence agencies want college degrees, a connection to get hired by the government, get through an obtrusive and unscientific process to determine your eligibility (lifestyle polygraph), and then you survive two years under your boss to get tenure at the federal government.
I disagree about the draft, it went away for good reason because it was abused during Vietnam and quite frankly a country doesn't deserve to exist if its population refuses to fight for it. That's what so controversial about the Ukraine-Russian war is the Ukrainians have used the draft and now critics say they are forcing their population to fight in unpopular war while being dead quiet about Russia's conscription policies. We're kind of seeing that in action with the low recruitment numbers for the US currently because we are engaging in global conflict for the benefit of another country. The good thing about countries that have mandatory service though is everyone is forced to do it and its just a fact of life and nobody feels like they are missing out on something if everyone else their age has to do it. I remember when I was 18, I didn't want to enlist when everyone else I knew was going to college to have fun.
Well... you kind of have to. You aren't going to get an all volunteer military if you don't at least pay lip service to the idea of treating them like kings. It's a shitty job, an even shittier career field, a straight up toxic work environment, dirty, dangerous, the hours suck, you have no work/life balance, the office locations are generally shitty, and it doesn't even pay well. No one would sign up were it not for the benefits package and a big part of the appeal of that benefits package is status.
It's a deal with the Devil either way. You bring back the draft and you're going to get a resentful society of draft dodgers and a military made up of largely worthless conscripts and you go all volunteer and you create a caste system where you must elevate the military or else you won't have one at all. The USA decided that it's worth it to create a societal divide in this way and have an institution that holds itself apart from the rest of society and tends to run in families.
I kind of agree but it also depends on what you have for an MOS. Some units function and some don't. Without revealing too much about myself, I used to work with active duty military and a lot of former service members turned contractors. I would say half the problems that one unit had would of not existed if they got their shit together and stopped treating the work place like it was high school. It was rear-echelon, wasn't dangerous, they worked eight hour shifts, five days a week, and the work wasn't hard. A lot of drama and bullshit happened in the unit and the unit commander didn't do shit about discipline. The infractions included: multiple DUIs in the unit, superiors sleeping with their subordinates ranging from NCO to officers (I knew one officer who slept with an NCO's wife), and unpunished AWOL. Nothing they did was worthy of thanking them for their service or all the other shit society bestows on them. Don't even get me started on some of those veterans who never combat deployed or had a real deployment but acted like they sacrificed as they post-military collected a six digit paycheck for having a security clearance and contract bonuses. I remember one guy was a former Army specialist who got out on medical before his first enlistment contract was up and would abuse the fuck out of his military discount. One day he came in to the office upset because the employee at the craft brewing store got annoyed at him for asking about a veteran discount.
The only time the military was full of worthless conscripts was Vietnam and that was done because Lyndon Johnson didn't want to go Congress for deploying reserve and national guard troops. He wrote that he felt that would be used against him in stopping his Great Society programs. He even distrusted his joint chiefs and thought they would use him going to congress as an excuse to get more funding for military programs to wage a war rather than the social welfare programs he proposed. It was an unpopular war that lead to poor fitness in the military especially with the college exemption with the draft and turned the draft into class conflict which is one of the worst ways to do a draft. The US military afterwards went with no draft was even worse off until Reagan and the 1980s surge in recruitment. After Vietnam, essential services in the DoD were moved to reserve or national guard to prevent another Vietnam from happening but 9/11 created a loop hole. Interesting enough, after the Civil War and all the drafting, the post reconstruction US Army was all volunteer and was in terrible fitness and full of drunks, idiots, and violent crooks. The US Cavalry was loaded with these guys and it showed at Little Bighorn.
Circling back to GarandThumb, he didn't have a special military career. He joined up as a SERE instructor decided he wanted to go officer and went Air Combat Controller. Wasn't good enough to get a combat deployment so his most notable deployment was Haiti after the natural disaster. He got out on medical retirement and immediately took steroids and showed his weight lifting gains despite having a claimed disability with his neck. This motherfucker still rides his former service record. It's cool he made it as a scarlet beret but its not impressive he couldn't get a combat deployment in SOCOM especially when he was serving during ISIS. GarandThumb got called out years ago when he called himself a gunfighter because people knew he never combat deployed.
I hate to be that guy but that largely has to do with them being vets.
I missed this at first. I think this applies to almost all, regardless of service. Talking about you again Focustripp, you got a lot of anime avatars for discord moderators...
