Hogan is asking for 100 Million Dollars. He may not get it, but since the case is being tried in Florida there is the fact that in order to appeal a verdict there you must put the amount of money up for bond during the appeals process.
Not entirely true. You can appeal without putting up the bond. The bond, a supersedeas bond, simply stays the judgment pending appeal and ensures that the money is there for the plaintiff to collect if they win on appeal, too. Without the bond in place, the plaintiff can immediately move to collection while the appeal progresses. Hulk would probably do this because he wants Hulkamania to run wild on Gawker.
Also, if Hulk basically nukes the company, it's going to have a bad time appealing. Even if it wins on appeal it would then have to sue Hogan to get the money back. That might not be easy, to say the least, and might not be worth doing.
This also isn't unique to Florida. Every state has this requirement. So does federal court. Unlike in federal court, though, the bond is mandatory. In federal court, the trial court can grant a stay without a bond, or for that matter, increase the amount of the bond required. In Florida, no bond, no stay.
Never understood why hulk hogan was the hill they decided to die on, what with the fact they had literally no legal case.
That something is newsworthy is a defense. Most news involving celebrities is. Much news involving completely normal people is.
