Nothing new. This is the argument they use for how scantily clad female characters like Bayonetta are still objectified even if they aren't real and even though it makes perfect sense for the character to dress that way (be it their personality, etc.)

The talk is only about 5 minutes (it's a series of short talks). The talks are meant to be about animation, which makes it strange why a Kotaku writer is given a slot. If you're pressed for time, the good stuff happens around 20:15. Look for the Skies of Arcadia slide. The first couple of minutes are setting up basic stuff like animations can express emotion, and it seems to be setting up a ludonarrative dissonance argument, but then it goes off the rails.
And it doesn't even make sense within it's own non-logic. If dressing sexy is against the character's free will, then dressing them conservatively is also be against the character's free will, but that line of reasoning is denied because no-one would willing choose to wear revealing clothes, except the people who do.

That Monster Hunter article is getting blasted in a lot of places - even the more casual fans are questioning how long he played it for considering the expansion's focus on capture and study over killing, and how the antagonistic monsters are fucking the eco-system over with their mere presence.

All of their articles are about games being too stressful or difficult. They even advocate seeking out using or creating mods for games that remove the enemies and just let you wander around aimlessly.

Holy shit I never seen anyone act like this over a piece of entertainment. I know most (all) journalists can't play for shit but to take elements away from a game just because you can't be assed to play it due to how "stressful" or "difficult" it is. what are they smoking ? Just as I thought I seen it all there is a brand new low. Most people play games to pass the time if you can't handle making articles/reviews about video games of all the things you need a career change maybe learn to flip some burgers while your at it.

I always liked how the non-violent 'moves' in that did basically jackshit and you had to solve everything with violence.
Anyway, the MonHun take is dumb. Some of the bigger monsters basically become living embodiments of natural disasters - Gore Magala is an obvious example.
It's amazing that the games journalism industry found a group of employees cheaper than 'people who want to play games for a living'.

It's more costly to hire enthusists who are debt free and want a livable wage than some NPC drone who is tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands maybe?) deep in student debt who is willing to work for peanuts if it means they can spread their moral superiority and maybe hopefully make their degree worth something (LOL).

Out of boredom I looked up the author. I recognize the name I think? Sam Greer. Or at least I thought so until realizing that's a woman in the twitter who has a Patreon with barely anything on it (of course). Their writing history is... interesting, OPM and OXM allowed people like them to write? I can't remember the last time I've bought a physical magazine let alone go to gaming websites outside of morbid curiosity so who knows.

I knew someone who ended up becoming a writer for Waypoint and seemingly a dozen other outlets since I last talked to him years ago. He's shoveling out the most boring shit ever now - top 10 lists, Fortnite news, weird mobile game shit, etc. Maybe 1 in ever 12 articles is an interesting read. He was doing some cool stuff back when I initially met him and seemed really motivated to write bigger pieces on games, but I just don't think traditional games journalism supports people who actually want to write interesting shit because "NEW FORTNITE LOCATIONS REVEALED IN LEAKED PATCH NOTES!!!!!!!" gets 100x the clicks.

I thought PC Gamer used to be pretty good, but then that article years ago where they bent the knee to the Troll Queen of Grifting pretty well signaled their entry into the lefty clickbait club.
I think it should be screamingly obvious to any sensible person that those who work themselves into a tizzy over the fictional rights of imaginary entities should have their opinions immediately disregarded. The fundie moral panic over violent video games wasn't nearly as dumb as this, as the thrust of the argument was that video games could have tangible, adverse effects on real people.

Monster hunter can be very stressful, I had a 20 minute hunt and after 84 kills I finally got the proper crown size needed. So I'm hitting the thing and the two other monsters in the area are Savage Deviljho and pink rathian.
they kept chasing my quarry away and making it real hard to land hits because the fucker would not stop moving from zone to zone.
My final time was 19 minutes 59 seconds and 45 split seconds. It was a large gold crown which meant it can have nearly twice the amount of HP than a normal monster and the shortness of time really works against you in that case because you're basically trying to do twice the amount of damage.
