Typical Simon Cardy of IGN giving a "coming-of-age" game like Mixtape a 10.

He changed his profile picture after everyone found out he looks like a soy-farting soyboy Frenchie.

Game journos handing out perfect scores to games with barely any gameplay, the jokes really write themselves.

Mixtape looks awful, between a videogame biting on the now overdone animation style of the Spider-verse animated films that people will probably keep reusing into the next decade and all of the people claiming it's a John Hughes film-style "coming of age" story but from the sound of it it's more like what if Gen Z'ers who never saw a 1980s "coming of age" film tried to ape the style after having one described to them, by someone else who was at best only vaguely familiar with them.

A three hour long tumblr movie where you do fuck all sounds like the perfect "game" for journos. So of course it get a very natural scoring, completely organic, not biased at all.

The interactive kissing minigame, must be what gave Mixtape all the 9 and 10s.

I can't tell you how much I fucking HATE that faux stop motion animation shit. They don't do anything clever with it.
I have the opposite problem. So many shows feel the need to awkwardly overanimate everything with tweens when snapping between a few key poses at a lower framerate would've been much more pleasing to the eye (and less effort!).
Maybe this is just my video game fried brain but I can't be alone here.

3d animation always looks mechanical. hand drawn looks the best, even low fps beavis and butthead.

Is this also going to be the "runaway" for Best Game of 2026 at The Game Awards, in usual Geoff fashion? And have politicians also endorsed the game yet too?

Couple of Mixtape tidbits:

Reviewers were sent out marketing package filled with trinkets, including a working portable CD player and headphones. It really strikes me as something game journalists would shit themselves with excitement over, and possibly influenced at least some of the glowing reviews.

The Victorian state government awarded at least two grants via VicScreen for a total of 240,000 AUD. Funding disclosures for the 2024-25 FY haven't been published so it's possible there was an additional grant.

I wasted 3 hours playing through the game yesterday, and it's fucking atrocious. The video @Mystery Nigga posted above of the shopping cart sequence is a good representation of how bad the gameplay and writing is. There's also single room adventure game sequences that have "puzzles" such as finding photos that are highlighted with yellow outlines and rotating around a handheld game console, inserting some batteries and rotating it around again to turn it on. Toddler level gameplay!

I've seen people saying Mixtape looks like someone’s rejected animated film pitch that was repurposed into a "game", and that seems plausible, it certainly looks like a crappy cartoon film that is occasionally interrupted by a couple of mini-games. The 10/10s and 9/10s being thrown it's way are ridiculous.

People honestly don't realize at how much damage Anita Sarkessian has done to modern entertainment. Oh, she didn't just affect gaming. It's media as a whole she's ultimately ruined.
