"We've recently been covering Musk-related news as he is in the process of buying Twitter, which is where a lot of game industry news breaks and fan conversation happens. As founder and CEO of SpaceX, he's also relevant to our general interest in space and space-related games, such as Starfield, which took inspiration from the company."

lmfao

Not even trying to hide that they don't want to write about video games anymore.

Im gonna put this piece of journalism here since people tend to forget certain stuff
"'Gamers' as a body don't exist."

Opinion disregarded. I guess by 2013 they hadn't gotten around to coordinating the "gamers are dead" line on the GameJournoPro mailing list.

EDIT: Giant Bomb update - Jeff Gerstmann is the only reason to keep following them at all. The youtube channel feels like kind of a ghost town, but hey, they got timestamps on their bombcast videos these days. Only took them until last year or so to finally give people something they asked for.

Dan Ryckert found an old gif of himself hitting Patrick Klepek in the balls.

I decided to have a look at giant bomb the other day and see what their review output was like. One review last year, a couple in all of 2020. You have to go back all the way to 2019 for any kind of meaningful output. The multimedia stuff is probably more popular but they used to at least try to be a genuine gaming website with reviews, previews and articles (the reviews back in the day were actually pretty well written). Looks like they just completely gave up in favour of lazy streams or whatever they're doing. They just need to put this sorry website out of its misery.

How do you get burned out over access to 100s of games?
Kotaku is so desperate for clicks that they'll publish dumbshit articles like that and keep them up even when they get roasted for it.

First reply tweet under that one really says all that needed to be said. Getting paid as a journalist and being offered 100 free games from the Xbox would be pretty fun, but I would never want to get paid for it in this current state of gaming journalism.

Kotaku made at least 3 "Elon Musk bad" articles this week alone - one about his Elden Ring build, second about some slap fight between him and some satirical site, and third one can be summarized as "NOOOOOOO YOU CAPITALIST OPRESSOR HOW DARE YOU CRITICIZE REMOTE WORK, IT'S TOTALLY NOT A COPE I WONT BE ABLE TO BINGE CONSOOM ENTERTAINMENT DURING WORKTIME ANYMORE NOOOOO".

It still amazes that Musk went from redditors' god to Counterrevolutionary Agent no.1 just by him expressing interest in buying some site's shares.

I remember when GB wanted to review literally every physical release. This makes me sad.

Speak of the devil: I forgot to post about this multiple times, and now it's old news, but I found this thread on the r/giantbomb subreddit. Might as well put this in here so I remember.

Rorie responded on GB forums regarding current state of premium.
Folks I don't have a tremendous amount to share in here right this very moment and I apologize for that. We've been having discussions on our side about Premium and content distribution and etc and I'm hoping we can talk about that sometime soon because obviously you deserve to know! I'm sorry I can't say more right now but I definitely have been reading this thread and wanted to drop something in here because I know plenty of you are frustrated. Anyone who knows me knows I love gabbin' and talkin' so I look forward to doing more of that when the time is right, but for now I just wanted to make sure you knew your concerns were noted.

Thread on the subreddit, the responses just remind me of the clear issues with the site, and how things really used to be better at Giant Bomb.

GB premium in general harkens back to an era of internet content where slightly irregular output was the norm and enough.
They compete now with some tough competitors on Twitch and YouTube. Smaller, flexible creators who pivot quickly to their audience and are locked into their release schedule.
GB has always felt like it finds it difficult to react to changes quickly, in this kind of market that isn’t really acceptable.

I’m a fan of Jeff but he’s over promised & underdelivered for a while now. He’s repeatedly teased at “exciting things to come” over the years and more often than not, they don’t come to fruition. I remember when covid hit how he hinted at doing some E3 like content (interviews etc) & then we never heard another word about it.
I didn’t believe a word when they said exciting things were to come after the Nextlander split but I was hoping I’d be proven wrong. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case.
Still love the site but the only content I now consume is on GB Infinite.

Really disheartening to read the tone of a lot of the replies in that GB forum thread. The OP made a polite, well-argued point on the issues with Premium and communication and so many replies are variations of "well if you don't like it, unsub". Why are those users so afraid of any critical discussion?
Was the same around here, until some of the mods, thankfully, dipped lol

Thank goodness, GB fans can be so oddly defensive even when things are clearly just not working out (Abby).

I’m guessing the anti-Elon Musk articles from Kotaku of all places means that they’re just hopping on to the bandwagon by regurgitating what they see on social media as real news.

Show us on the doll where Elon touched you, Kotaku.

There have been ongoing problems with the in-house Giantbomb video stream setup, and this has meant more things have been streamed on Twitch than usual. I don't think it's meant to be a permanent thing.
Didn't Jeff expressly say that this is a permanent thing and they aren't going back in-office ever again? How would you go back in office when you don't even have full-time employees anymore? Who would the office be for?
