The only reason I ever cared about GiantBomb was because of Jeff. And he checked out years ago. That dude seems so apathetic about video games that it makes you wonder why he even bothers. The "GB Talks Over E3" shows used to be pretty good, but not anymore. Their network is shit like the rest anymore and I long for the days of goofy shit like Stuttering Craig and Handsome Tom.

Last 3 videos: Bombcast, Bombcast, Bombcast
Man. At least upload a Quick Look on some literal who video game in between those.

A group of people who used to make fun of Twitch streamers that now look and act exactly like Twitch streamers, but are somehow less fun. Some of these people are professionals who have been "journalists" for two decades, two of them are "producers" who used to make sets/desks/etc for the studio - and look how horrendous these setups are.

They've been doing this for 2 years and still don't even have decent audio on a podcast. There's more corporate branding for Cheeze Its than their actual website on screen. There is 18 minutes of Video Game talk in this Video Game podcast in the first hour and 5 minutes as they chose to instead to spend huge amounts of time on such hot button issues as "Are Sandler movies bad intentionally?", "Gatekeeping in Video Games" and "I think Disney might be a big company and/or a monopoly" instead.

Check out next week for such riveting talk, such as "Is a hotdog a sandwich?"

Man, how did GB go from basically leading the charge on how games are covered, especially with video content, to being this embarrassing stagnant mess.

Though for me it was the point I stopped visiting the site, its probably unfair to point to Ryan dying as the catalyst but clearly they've gone through a series of fuck ups since then to get to this point. Its sad more than anything, I still remember GB as this awesome new independent thing and I associate a lot of positivity with it and its sad to see the site in this state.

E3 is dead (again)

It's going to be an online only thing which means all of the large companies have no real obligation to put up stuff for it since they all have their own online events. The decision may have been made after the negative reception of previous in-person events.

The point I’m making is that we do need an Edward Snowden/Julian Assange like reporter to make a game journalism crash happen on the same level as a possible video game crash.

Though, for that to happen, it probably won’t exist in our lifetimes. It may exist when sites like this one in question will unfortunately no longer exist.
I don't think you need that. I remember when magazines would mock websites like GameSpot as unprofessional. Any idiot with a computer and a modem could make a website after all. Now we're seeing the same thing happen to sites like Kotaku.

I don't see why accessibility modes and easy modes are a bad thing for most games, especially to account for things like colorblindness or people who struggle with things like button mashing. I personally know people who have had issues like that who were unable to play certain games because of issues like that and that is kind of shit.
I played a board game with a friend recently. It was about rolling coloured dice to do things. However, the set had colourblind dice, but the rules hadn't been changed to reflect that. As a result, there was a lot of "Is this brownish orange dice the red dice, or is that the orangey brown one?"

Point to me on the timeline when a games journalist's opinion ever mattered?
Fallout: New Vegas. Dead or Alive Xtreme 3.

Uh-oh, why is this thread on the Giant Bomb subreddit now?

All this from the last 24 hours.
Doom and gloom has been hanging around Giant Bomb for a long time now, it's not new, I've seen people moan on /v/ as far back as 2017. Now, however, it feels justified. There's so little content on Youtube, and apparently, Premium isn't really worth much anymore. It's sad.
  • I get Reel Layers, and I hate it
What is Reel Layers?

Their network is shit like the rest anymore and I long for the days of goofy shit like Stuttering Craig and Handsome Tom.
I remember the early days of screw attack. It's a shame Craig went and ruined it by chasing money instead of growing independantly.

I know Handsome Tom went off to found Game Heroes, but it was already on the downward spiral when I heard of it. What happened to that site? Was it ever good?

I think old Giant Bomb could've made that a funny segment back in the day when they reviewed energy drinks and strange foreign sweets. Not these days though.

It was alright but neither were as good without the other. But hey, at least we got ProJared out of it all. Anyone that was around for his debut on ScrewAttack sure got a heck of a ride.

Now I’m sitting here wishing for a future of E3 events being terminally online, while worrying more about digital games taking over the landscape instead of physical ones.

Physical media is a long ways from going away.

The fact that you still need to sacrifice your first born for a disc version of the PS5 while the digital only still just takes a kidney really is telling. Supposedly Chinese Steam Users lost access to their undownloaded games that they paid for and even the ones that needed specific DRM apparently got fucked with the closure since there was no server side check in.

Right now nobody is really suffering from physical and digital coexisting. But there probably will be something that triggers it in the future where customer rights are laid out fairly.

E3 is two Irish guys in the back yard as of 2020. They claimed it since old E3 gave up and didn't do shit.

It can't be reclaimed until they give up the mantle.

And yet five years later, nothing has changed since then. I’m starting to question how the colleges that offer journalism degrees don’t mention this tidbit in their college lectures.
And remember, "games journalists" are vermin even by the standards of "real" journalists. No wonder they'll sell their souls for a blowie from Zoe.

and T2 will make something tone deaf once again

People think (probably correctly, I don't know) that if Ryan were still around - he would not have tolerated Austin Walker (or Abby, or Ben, or Voidburger). People also think that Jeff kind of "gave up" on GB when Ryan died and that Ryan would have been the one would rather close/burn the site down than let it become what it is today. Ryan was also apparently the fire for a lot of the "Fuck you corporations" spirit that early GB had that they're sorely, sorely lacking. At a minimum, when Danny O'Dwyer said "I want to get wild on GB, I want to open up Pokemon Card Packs" Ryan would have teased the ever loving shit out of him for it.

Semi related, but Giantbomb is 100% dead. Not going into the office ever again reduces them to "kind of shitty twitch streamers" because they never figured out how to have real production value on their "at home" setups, which was something that used to set them apart.

Nextlander is fucking making $47,500 (at a minimum) a month, probably split 3 ways - on Patreon alone. It also has Twitch subs, and direct ad revenue from the podcast portion. That means, from just Patreon - each person is making $190,000/year at a minimum. Why the fuck would you work for Giantbomb when they (allegedly pay) about 30% of that, unless you want to "pull an Abby" and show up for a bit to grow an audience/get your name out there and then dip out for greener pastures ASAP.

I couldn't relate more to both of these. Tried to listen to this week's Bombcast and just couldn't make it all of the way through without shaking my head at them. Their 20 minute rant on them whining about Horizon: Forbidden West is a great example of how out of touch they are. And even Jess(VoidBurger) doesn't even add much to the dynamic to these. The magic that GB once had is gone now and is just a shadow of it's former self like how G4 is now. Oh, and their new intro is baaaaad.

I'm catching up with Nextlander as we speak and their energy is so much better than current team at GB.

What was their fucking problem with it? Not enough disabled trans Muslim women in it?
