The only connection, as tenuous as it may be, is that both Gamergate and Trumpism were reactions to the stranglehold that woke neoliberalism has over American society.

The people writing these articles can recognize that they stand to lose out if the status quo falters, but balk at accepting their share of the blame when their overreaches cause hard reactions from the people they're trying to clamp down on.
 
So there are rumors about that Rockstar is finally working on another GTA game and that one of the player-characters will be female. Please observe as this becomes the press's latest GamerGate strawman to beat as they find and roast the maybe three fifteen-year-olds on Twitter who give a shit and ignore that nobody cared when GTA had three playable black protagonists (Lance Vance in Vice City Stories is the one you don't remember) or allowed you to play as a woman in the online mode since IV. In fact, Jim Sterling's video today had such a segment in which he basically calls all gamers - not just the ones complaining about this, but unambiguously all gamers - "scum." But I guess that's not unexpected behavior from someone who pulls in over $14,000 a month from Patreon alone while railing against the evils of capitalism.

As much as it might be funny to think that GamerGate is the reason how Trump is elected or even the Capitol riots, chances of this is extremely low.

Starting with how GamerGate has its origin, 4chan's /v/ receives like averagely 100k+ posts a day and /pol/ receives like averagely 200k+ posts a day. That's not even close to how many votes Trump gets (62.9M+ votes) and even though there's estimates of ten thousands or less behind the Capitol riots, even trying to pin that with 4chan is also ridiculous since there are also other factors such as amount of unique posters as well as nationality of said unique posters which significantly drops that number. Now apply that to 8kun or Reddit which also would be far-fetched.

Bottom line? If you want to pin a platform to be the most likely one behind these two events that would be Facebook.
 
When has logic or reason ever let some one not blame a bogyman made up in their own head? This is gonna be the new left bogyman for the extremely online left to blame everything on.

It was a very big deal if a) you're a terminally online games journalist (or their friends in more generalized media), b) you're a professional victim, or c) you're a spergy af anti-sjw gaymer.
For everyone else it was maybe 6 months of funny drama and increasingly embarrassing attempts at relevance ever since.

But it gave us Don Sargon and Brianna Wu so for lolcow followers it's been an endless factory of good cows.

People will say no because of the autism, but actually it kind of was. Gamergate was the first time a lot of people saw that the Left wasn't countercultural or edgy anymore.

That may not seem important, but being those things is the cornerstone of their narrative.
 
If you really think about it, GamerGate was the Occupy Wall Street of journalism.

They could have made some very important on why video games should be allowed to have more diverse and engaging new material for both men and women, as well children to enjoy.

Instead, they just randomly added ridiculous notions like gender, race and sexuality into things that have nothing to do with video games.

Maybe it's the first time the internet memer community figured that out, but there was plenty of bullshit during Obama's first term and especially the post-OWS years when identity politics got turned up to 11 that redpilled most people.

It happened because some autistic goon tried to post a tumblr-style callout blog of his ex, mistakenly thinking he would be in good company, and out of nowhere, all discussion of the drama was purged and the commenters were banned. Depression Quest wasn't even the original source of the drama, it was just ZQ's only claim to be a 'game developer' in any context.
