Gamergate was dumb garbage from the start. Gaming "media" has been garbage since day one and has always been rife with nepotism, payola, etc. As far as I can see, the only reason salty internet spergs got salty this time is because A FEMALE benefited from it this time and also some gaming "journalists" got laid.

This, of course, does not absolve or justify the more hysterical elements of anti-GG.

Agreed on the first one. Gaming journalism has always been rife with corruption in some form or another, especially in the non-company owned console gaming magazines. Hell, I was watching a Guru Larry video the other day about gaming journalism scandals that predated GG, and the Driver 3 one blew my mind.

But while that was before the advent of social media, the fact that these people so concerned with "ethics in journalism" didn't speak up to this extent and this vocally during the whole fiasco with Jeff Gerstmann getting canned from GameSpot because he didn't give Kane and Lynch a glowing review (which happened just as social media was starting to get a little steam, IIRC), which is perhaps the biggest example of "ethics and gaming journalism" and yet they only started chimping out when it became about a woman (and yeah, Zoe is really dodgy herself, but work with me here), really goes to show where their "priorities" lie when it comes to championing ethics in gaming journalism.

People were getting tired of them though. Polygon was laying off writers left and right, and refused to be profitable. I doubt Kotaku was in any better shape. They were becoming obsolete as everyone would rather watch guys play video games on YouTube and Twitch. Then GG happened, and they're in the limelight again. Though, as far as I can see, it didn't last long or saved them at all. Even when GG ironically became their biggest fans.

Being fair, people DID complain about Jeff being fired and the news make it rounds in popular gaming forums, to the point of even get a Penny Arcade comic about it. What it didn't happen was Jeff Gertsmann dickridding in the controversy (it actually took a while before GB was formed) as both GG and AntiGG figures like to do.

https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAc...ma_ggrevolt_doxxed_otter_jesus_and_attempted/

tl;dr some GG autist threatened to shoot some Magic The Gathering and 40k players and got the cops called on him, is constantly whining "it's not a threat it's shitposting bro" on reddit, or someone is actually white-knighting him.

Some of these KiA pussies are fucking pathetic. It is not "swatting" to call the police about an actual crime you fucking morons. And quit spelling it "doxxing" you sound like fucking tumblrinas. Okay, at least those posts were actually downvoted and the posts saying they were wrong were upvoted, but seriously wtf.

GG didn't quite happen in a vacuum, as some might say.

Some have argued that it was the "straw that broke the camels back" not to mention the unprecedented levels of censorship everywhere that made everyone who didn't really give a fuck in the first place go... "huh?" as well as it occurring in the indie games scene, the scene that was (apparently) supposed to be fairly immune to such cronyism.

Maybe some context is in order. Corruption pieces about the Games Media have always repeatedly come up in the past. Jeff Gerstman being fired for his bad review, and Dan Hsu speaking about pay for coverage. In /v/ threads devoted to this sort of corruption coverage were called "RAGE Threads"

Then later on Jennifer Hepler, a writer for Bioware gives an interview, stating that she hated videogames, and wanted a "storybook mode" where players could skip gameplay all together, which caused a bit of salt from /v/ and the like. This was soon after Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 was released, and many players were quite disappointed with the final products.

Meanwhile, in the news, Bioware is getting tangled up in all sorts of stuff. Being caught with one of its own staff members submitting reviews for its own game, videogame sites suddenly report on Gamers being branded as homophobic in Mass Effect 3, despite the same type of thing existing in the previous games and there was nary a peep.

Around this time, a post appears on various boards on 4chan to a registered name "Anita Sarkeesian" encouraging to donate to her KS. Most people just tell her to fuck off and die. But one month later, an apparent "harassment campaign" that several gaming sites cover, brings her KS to the forefront and she is funded $150,000 over her goal.

After the funding OC begins appearing the Anita "Happy Merchant", the Rule 34, the beat up game on newgrounds etc etc, the games media latch on to this and Anita becomes famous enough to get picked up by mainstream news outlets. She gets speaking offers, interviews, all that stuff. Most gamers are quite annoyed because of the cherrypicking she does in her videos, as well as starting with her conclusion and working backwards from there.

In the meantime, you begin to see more and more articles start appearing like the ones below, decrying sexualization, accusing developers of sexism. Websites being to appear, devoted to critiquing videogames and similar hobbies under a feminist/social justice lens.
sexistpanda.jpg needhits.jpg justice.jpg

Soon after, another media corruption piece appears, this time in Eurogamer. The writer details the level of cronyism in the industry, and backs up his words by showing that a current videogame reviewer is also contracted to the publisher of the games as PR. She decides to threaten legal action, and Eurogamer fires the writer and amends the article. Despite the writer also having videos and articles on suggesting what she accused of, to be successful in the games industry.

It was less than a year until The Quinnspiracy would happen, and the rate of videogame articles being antagonistic towards its standard demographic was increasing. I imagine for your average 12-24 yr old autistic videogame board poster, things seemed to be getting more ridiculous, more enraging. It would just take another nudge to push them over the edge.

And as much as how it didn't happen in a vacuum, GG, as autistic as it started, didn't get any worse until you had MRA's and the like such as those thinking SJW's will rule the world coming in. As some said, the controversy with Quinn would make some believe it's all due to a woman. That itself, whether one agrees or not, would end up being the reason once those that just wanted better gaming ethics get pushed away and MRA's and the like get more focus (such as Thunderfoot with his repeated boner over Sarkeesian). Either way, the autism itself does bring laughs from both sides but eventually, they both end up riding out their welcome.

Oh of course, once /pol/ decided The Quinnspiracy and the "Gamers are Dead" articles was a chance to stick it to the feminists and the SJW's I'm sure heaps of MRA's and Redpillers and such wanted a piece of the action.

It was noted earlier that /pol/ did get into GamerGate and with the SJW's, Mister Metokur, formerly the Internet Aristocrat, wanted GG to be the thing that could expose SJW's. SJW's don't need GG to expose them, not when we already have internet articles showing their idiocy such as wanting to revoke an MLK quote because "it's not inclusive enough" among other sorts of SJW idiocy.

Early on, it was just wanting better ethics and showing gamers weren't 100% white males (as was shown by the notyourshield hash-tag which ironically, it's founder/supposed founder ended up doxing himself to blame SJW's or something like that) but soon, redpillers and MRA's and the like jumped on the boat and ended up spreading their tism further than those that wanted better ethics. The latter could no doubt end up acting as ammo for those claiming GG is purely misogynistic. At this point, one may as just see GamerGate as it is: an autistic internet fight between SJW's and anti-SJW's.

Also, just to note with the earlier sped claiming his threat was shitposting, that along with actual jokes (like Parkourdude91 addressing Brianna Wu) would no doubt end up making some people think GG could be a terrorist group or something along those lines.

The thing is their idea of SJW is it's literally genocide on the white race if a black guy shows up in a Star Wars movie. Like that hadn't happened already from the first movie on. There are some genuinely stupid motherfuckers who are actual outright misogynists and racists, even open neo-Nazis who game flooding in to GG and certainly made it look to a casual outsider as if the Quinn/Sarkeesian bullshit narrative was actually true.

It's no surprise Quinn herself was a long term malicious troll and many of the original antis were SA goons.

Obsessively focusing on Quinn was being trolled and being too dumb to know it.

ETA: Not that IA was really in the class of hardcore dumbasses. His own stuff ranged from hilarious to egomaniacal asshattery.

Which is the entire point. To keep people distracted with trivial and obscure things.
Anyone who still got the attention span to read 16 pages should read this: https://www.oneeyedman.net/misc/social_movement_subversion.pdf

that article has a pretty solid explanation of how gamergate has been doomed to failure from the start:
muh pr.png

aGG didn't even have to put in any effort at subversion when GG handed them the first two on a silver platter -- not that it stopped people like the Chunabomber, SuperSpaceFag, Nyberg and Galvez.

but when the response to any questions along the lines of "how do we get the general public on our side?" would be dismissed with "muh PR" and "we're never going to look like the good guys so let's talk like Elliot Rodger instead", GG hasn't just been shooting itself in the foot, it's been going full Budd Dwyer.

and there's only so much one fabulously gay Breitbart writer can do for a bunch of people who are strangely averse to helping themselves.

It didn't even matter though, it could be a retard in GG saying crazy shit, or someone saying crazy shit in the GG tag then screencapping to use against GG later. On the internet, alls it takes is a screenshot to prove harassment or misogyny, and you can write yourself an article on how GG is ISIS. You don't even have to try, as long as you have a circle of the media to agree to write what you tell them to write.

As long as you magnify the worst, and not report on the legitimate. You'll never get good PR, and will be "no-platofrmed" as they say.

Plus IA got a fucking girl to blow him live on his stream, which shows what fucking egos you were dealing with once /pol/ got involved.

You do realize said egos also include KingOfPol (who fell for a fake conspiracy post from Nick Denton) and Ethan Ralph (who chimped out at BroTeamPill to the point where one of Ralph's goons tried to dox BroTeamPill and sent emails to some guys dad instead).

Not only that, but didn't someone say that MundaneMatt, one of the pro figures, wanted to be leader of GamerGate or something? That aside, one of said egos we also had is HomerBeoulve. Sure he isn't some guy that is well-known among GamerGate but he is someone that manages to regurgitate tweets about GamerGate.
