It's kind of interesting seeing this whole movement from a largely outside perspective.

Some of us remember the "good old days" when gaming magazines ruled the roost and generally the mag would inform you 1) When a game comes out and 2) If they had a review copy to tell you about it.

Generally if they didn't have point 2 you'd just avoid the game altogether because it was a guaranteed steaming pile of turd and they desperately wanted to protect the sales figures as best they could by not having some reviewer savage it, companies which were much more confident would hurl that shit out with ease and sit back and enjoy the rewards that came with the good press coverage. Rareware, Nintendo, Capcom and Valve were always quite famous for this latter attitude.

These days, with the weird skewing of reviewer scores (anything below 85 on metacritic is 'crap') and the issue of game journos being friends with wanna be/first time game devs sounds all sorts of skeevy but the simple reality is....

This is what a mature journalism landscape looks like. Favours are traded, contacts developed that become friends... and puff pieces are written to promote stuff from those contacts and friends. The PR people sweeten the deals to keep people coming back for more product from the mainstream and we might sometimes uncover genuinely good gems of games which have otherwise slipped by us all.

This goes on endlessly in the supposedly "mature" mainstream media with friends writing puff pieces for friends in order to helpfully give a nudge to whatever business they happen to own. More often than not this sails past nice and quietly, and nobody really cares. There might be a slight boost in sales for the friend, and they get a shiny little quote on their website but generally nothing happens.

Gamergate was basically the perfect storm all thanks to Gawker Media. If established papers like the DailyMail are the gutter press than Gawker is where the effluent flows to. Far too much of their 'market strategy' involved clickbaiting and outrage and Kotaku involved itself in some pretty poor practises both with its journalists and with how it treated leaked information.

Sadly much of Kotaku's wounds were not inflicted by Gamergate but by their own stupidity. Picking fights with your own audience will often turn off more casual readers of your site, which should go without saying. Leaking information gained wrongly on Ubisoft and Bethesda saw them effectively blacklisted from two of the bigger publishers and probably put the back up on the others which limited their information pool on games that the mainstream gamer was actually interested in.

Gawker going nuclear via one of its subsidiaries has also enormously fucked up wider advertising (something that GGers have noted themselves) in what had previously been the safest space for online advertisers.

The war that GGers and SJWs sparked did about $1m of damage to Gawker's advertisement stream, but may have also caused far more than this across gaming media as a whole as advertisers decided to declare the entire gaming arena hilariously unsafe. At any time they could buy space on a website only for it to begin crashing and burning.

Our current journalistic landscape has gone beyond mature to decadent, corrupt, and beyond redemption.

The media is essentially acting as stenographers for the government. It's a trifle more sophisticated than the way the Russian media panders to Putin and portrays him as some sort of demigod, but no less of a disservice to the public.

It's too bad the level of outrage leveled against gaming journalism hasn't been turned on our real "news" media, which is a sick joke and a travesty of what a free press should look like.

As someone who posted in the other thread, eh, whatever. Besides, Anita's got my blessing on scamming as many retards who will hand her their money, she's the Phineas T. Barnum of our age, good for her, hope she turns a tidy profit.

And any idiot who spews salt over her is just another cow, which is good for this thread.
