They will never stop using it as a bogeyman, the same way shitheads never stop using their own preferred imaginary demons as clear and present threats to their lives.

You'll see this same mindset in other areas. The bogeyman changes names, but it will always be the same nebulous-yet-omnipresent threat that justifies a stupid worldview and ever-expanding power-grabs.

It will always eternally amuse me how much shit gets attributed to it. A bunch of nerds from /v/ are apparently powerful enough to get Trump elected, by the virtue of being angry about shitty articles by the most inane people in the world.

They latch onto that because it was one of the first signs of the populist tide turning against the Left. For always-online Leftists they can understand that 2016 was a bellwether moment where they lost the support of the working class, but their ideology won't let them admit that so they have to invent more and more convoluted rationalizations to explain the happenings of that year.

GamerGate became a boogeyman because it was an example of people sharing the truth about a story that the mainstream media lied about and MSM being unable to be accepted when they declared one narrative as the true one.

For a lot of people, GamerGate never died because people kept on being able to share factual information online about stories that the MSM lied about, which typically resulted in mainstream media narratives looking like weird delusions in comparison to the facts people could present online.

Don't forget how the people still seething about it are utterly pissed off that they couldn't just get every single sector of private and public institutions to clamp on this with more fury than Stalin could ever muster, even though discussion of it got clamped down on pretty much all major public forums.

Still crazy that Liveleaks censored videos about gamergate while having beheading videos hosted. GamerGate was seriously viewed as more offensive than outright murder to the powers that be.

All they actually wanted out of games is to be movies, because they're a bunch of pretentious film school rejects who want similar cred for being a "game dev" as a movie actor/director gets. They assumed it was an easier path to becoming a "respectable" "artist". They never cared about the medium itself except as a vehicle for their own personal and political goals.

Which is why they loved such easy, simple walking simulators like Depression Quest and Gone Home: games that require next to no skills to create or play.

Both games can be finished within minutes with minimal effort.
