Gamergate's a nice convenient boogieman. Nobody sane cares about it anymore, and any negative reactions you get beyond "who fucking cares, it's 2017" will feed into the "uneducated sexists/racists" narrative.
Basically every justification for "linking" gamergate to Trump winning the white house is a meandering go-nowhere rant that boils down to the author's personal distaste for both groups of people.

They all have to do with some sort of chan memes and anons that were pro-Trump, either legitimately or for the purpose of fucking with people. While they rag on about how Trump and Nazi's rose because gamergate, all other gamers and people playing games are too busy enjoying their hobby or dealing with life to care about people screeching about an autistic screeching match causing the US to have a meme president.
This more or less. GamerGate at this point is just a boogeyman for these hanger-ons (and a sort of, for lack of a better word, "security blanket" for the spergs on the other side thinking it still lives on). Normal people aren't really going to give two shits about what some idiot on Twitter has to say about gamergate and every "link" of GamerGate to Trump winning the election also comes off as a way of wanting attention.

Actually one of the funniest goddamned running gags on Twitter was people bringing up MovieBob's raging hate-boner for Hillary back in the early 2000s with Jack Thompson and how that mutated into an actual boner under Social Justice.

Far as the journalist goes, they would no doubt get some ass-pats from the hanger-ons in this thread. Commiesona tried to whiteknight one of them while calling someone an idiot. Meanwhile, 9volt tried making some sort of joke or jab at gamers regarding a game journalist and pewdiepie. Really though, whatever there was, one could count on clickbait and such being part of this group.
