Woman sleeps with men that happen to be part of Gaming Journalism. She gets called bad words. People trying to talk about it get silenced. Gamers are considered a bad word because gamers are all cis white males who secretly hate women and everyone who is not is secretly bullied by them or not a real minority. Articles come out telling people that. Gamers fight back.

SJWs are defending gaming journalism either because they work in it or [more commonly] they only see the SJW victims that gaming journalism sees fit to showcase, while victims from #GamerGate are ignored, men, or sockpuppets.

I haven't been paying attention to this for a while. What the fuck is this even?

Can someone explain to me why SJWs are defending gaming journalism when gaming journalism is a field of primarily white males?

Most SJWs are privileged hipsters acting offended on the behalf of others anyways.

Varis and I did a really nice comprehensive set of goings-on so far.

That right there is a question you will probably get fifty different answers to from fifty different people. Here's mine:

Game journalism sucks. Has sucked for years. It sucked when Gamespot was firing people because they didn't give a proper paid review, it sucked when Geoff Keighley sold his dead-eyed soul and rose to become the Dorito Pope, and it sucked for the last couple of years where journalists realized that they can use Tumblr bait, write it up in a slightly different tone and make fantastic clickbait articles.

Now, this isn't to say that in the wide world of vidya, there aren't problems like racism and sexism. There are those, and there most certainly problems that need to be addressed. However, it isn't going to be resolved by taking the route of least resistance by letting zealots hold the reigns and make all the calls. But game journalism in their infinite capacity to suck, decided this would be okay since it got them more monies.

But gamers kept them around because it was what they had. Keep in mind it has only been in the past 5-10 years really that gamers had begun to not be instantly vilified ("School shooters inspired by Video Games") or relegated to niche markets. Gamers felt like they were coming into their own at last and were finally getting some respect for their past time.

Now, back in August, it came to light a female game developer was sleeping around with a bunch of dudes, few of which were notable game journalists. People get fucking pissed, especially when it seems that they were getting favorable news articles written. However, instead of fessing up and saying "yeah, that was shitty, sorry" the game journalism circles went dead quiet. Gamers pushed back and said "what the fuck?"

And then the first volley happened in late August. Multiple hit pieces were posted across the board decrying the death of gamers, claiming gamers were all angry white nerds who hated women, etc. etc. Essentially the equivalent of if ESPN came on the air one day and said, "everyone who like baseball is a doddering old racist white man!"

And from there, things have splintered and fractured in so many fucking ways. The usual GamerGater stance is something about being about ethics in game journalism or whatever bullshit. From my perspective though, it's not so much about that, as most GamerGaters are done with places like Kotaku, Polygon, Gamasutra, etc. Instead, it's more about regaining face. Most gamers resent being relegated to stereotypes, and they resent more that games media, who they had trusted to have their back for years decided to stab them in the back by calling anyone who doesn't agree with them a woman-hating subhuman and then letting the SJWs have their way.

My thoughts on the matter, anyway.

Hey guys, not really been following this thread (sorry, 215 pages tests even a saint's patience), but I noticed something in an article I was reading about the pull of Paranautical Activity following death threats to Gabe Newell. (I must apologize if this is one of the many gaming sites on the shit list or something, I'm getting all my sources from my usual source - google.)

The codeveloper who has gone on to take over Code Avarice (PA's developing company) has now been tweeting that he blames the aggressive actions of GamerGate peopel as causing a lock down on the actions of people in the gaming industry, and putting them under extreme scrutiny.

So, is there any truth to this, or are people using this as an excuse? Just wondering as it hits close to home.

What do you think about the rape threats and all? "Vocal minority"?

I prefer to call them "fucking dumbasses."

No one deserves to be threatened with violence, irregardless of their beliefs. People that do shit like that aren't doing anything except to serve their own selves.

Gamergate has a hashtag dedicated to shutting down accounts that doxx or harrass the anti-gg people. Which is far more than what anti-gg has done, who have either ignored or egged on the harassers on their own side.

They managed to find the person who sent Anita the death threats who caused her to cancel an event at a university in Utah and found out it was some guy in Brazil who wanted to egg on the conflict for his own reasons. Fortunately in Brazil it's a crime to send death threats of any kind to anyone even over twitter, under the condition that the person receiving the death threats has to pursue charges. So with evidence and knowledge the pro-gg people went to Anita to tell her that her harasser has been found out!

Aaaaaand she either ignored them or blocked them.

So Anita is scared enough of death threats to cancel events and go on a media tour across several syndicated networks and popular television shows...but not enough to press charges against her abuser.

What do you think about pro-life advocates who advocate and occasionally do murder doctors, or supporters of Prop 8 who were harassed, vandalized, and threatened? What do you think of anti-GG who send death threats, doxx people, get them fired from their jobs, send knives to people telling them to kill themselves, and file false police reports against pro-GG people?

Gamergate's probably done more to try and combat this kind of crap than any of the above groups. And like Jaimas said, a lot of these aren't even coming from us.

Anyone know how that LordKat letter writing campaign is going?
I saw a draft of one letter being put together after the initial stream, but haven't heard anything about it since. This is not the best time to ask, because LK's server was compromised and he's gone to Chicago to fix it.

Dunno, dunno anything about the issues.

_blank_ was giving a history, naming names and all. Seemed like he knew what he was talking about. I asked him a question about it. The other responses so far are acceptable. Or not. I dunno. I'm not the one to make the assessment.

Under extreme scrutiny? No. It's hard to call it extreme when people are publicly saying stupid shit with a twitter associated with their name, job, etc. It seems like our generation is taking a crash course on "Shit you say on the internet doesn't go away". Let me quote his tweet...

"I am going to kill gabe newell.

He is going to die."

The guy was supposed to be the face of his company and he was speaking in a public medium used to promote and talk about their product. He deleted the tweet later. I think he believes that if gamergate wasn't going on then nobody would have bothered to save the tweet and share it. I think that's crap. The guy was chimping out over twitter and people love watching twitter breakdowns. It was inevitable.
