Anita on Colbert is going to be the smuggest of smug liberal feel-good circle jerks. Don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise.

It's already been recorded. Odds are it's anti-GG. It's a big topic to cover and the only way to cover it in a 5-10 minute piece is to gloss over some possibly big issues. Even if it was pro-GG a small bit wouldn't be able to cover things accurately. Gamergate's biggest strength has been then it's a large group with mostly no names attached. Anyone could go on twitter and argue/debate with people just like anyone could quietly sit in the back and send emails to companies in hopes of pulling ads from Gawker. It's not difficult to vilify GG at all as there are actual parts of it that have been just as bad as any SJW. The thing is that many of the stories claiming GG is an entirely toxic thing have been single articles or small news segments that really wouldn't cause normal folk to care enough or people already involved to change their minds. Now someone incredibly popular in pop culture is going to take a stance and on their own medium that is targeted toward age demographic that powers both sides. They have the ability to actually change minds and opinions of the people already heavily involved on either side because pop culture is specifically based around changing the flow of opinion in that moment. Many people have already slowly started to step away from GG because the louder aspects (and sadly the most entertaining) really don't have much to do with the core issues. Colbert will be able to get those people to walk away entirely. If he were to do a pro-GG piece? It could attract a whole shitload of people, causing it to bloat up further and spiral out of control faster. Imagine a bunch of barely informed people latching onto something overnight and blindly fighting for it. That's some full SJW-type shit right there.

Unrelated to Colbert, but it hasn't started yet so:

>"The first time I met him, I was the opinion editor at The DM, and I turned to see this creepy fuck standing behind me… About this time my phone started ringing, and I politely ignored it while I talked to this guy. Then it rang again, and again until I answered. It was the managing editor, who had ducked behind the front desk and was whispering, "stay calm, and don't react to this, but this guy isn't supposed to be here. He has a restraining order. Get rid of him." By this point, I was concerned the guy might knife me at any moment; so I told him to write me three columns and that I'd evaluate them and get back to him on whether he could write for me. (I'm still proud of my ability to remain poised and convincingly pretend that the dm had any fucking standards.)"

>Turns out, a year prior, he'd come in wanting the dm to run a comic strip that he was doing. When he was told they weren't interested, he flipped out. He called one of the workers a fat dyke, and when Dr. Husni came to her defense, he called him a "raghead" and a "sand n****r." They got a restraining order to keep him away from Farley, but when they moved to Bishop, it no longer applied, and he was actually able to weasel back in to working for the SMC.

>For the record, he lives in Boston now and likes to brag about his vespa, and he's married to some dude. He used to brag about going hooking up with men without them knowing he wasn't a woman, which is fucking sick and obscenely immoral, no matter how open-minded you are."

">He began the sex change process not long before I quit working there so I only saw him like twice dressed as a woman. Very wierd guy, always ordered tofu.

>I took Westmoreland's political philosophy class with this guy - Went by "Crazy J" in class

> He lived in the building behind mine and would blast Madonna constantly and would leave all of his windows and balcony completely open while he danced. I remember he had some sort of girlie looking dog that always had a "someone please rescue me from this freak" look on its face. We called the dog Precious because of its similarity to the dog in Silence of the Lambs and Flynt's similarity to Buffalo Bill. I remember he went through rush in either '02 or '03 and told us some off the wall story that he used to live in DC and that he had gotten stabbed in the back of the head during a mugging and had completely lost all of his memory, including his name. Totally not surprised that he ended up having a sex change.

>On one mysterious occasion, the apartment building was slightly shaking and extremely loud music could be heard. Weren't really sure what was going on. Ends up, John was dancing out of control in his living room. This was at like 4 a.m.

>He was always sweaty. He told my ex the story about his memory loss but I don't remember it being as a result from a stab wound. He was polite, but weirded us out. The dog barked constantly.

>He changed his name to Brianna because he had a crush on a fellow journalist student named "Bryan." Also, he moved to Colorado. Also, he had his peepee cut off."

I don't have cable, did anyone here catch The Colbert Report, or is that still airing? I'm interested to know how it goes, especially since Colbert has pandered to Anonymous in the past during Occupy Wall Street (I think, it was when they superimposed the Guy Fawkes face over his for a brief moment). You'd think he would be in "support" of GamerGate... by being over the top "against" it in-character.

That went better than I expected but the most interesting part is Anita compromising/sugar coating her views for a broader audience. I mean, equality for women in video games? That sounds great. I want some of that! Except that the tweets from @femfreq and McIntosh's own personal twitter are way more venomous and make broad strokes against male gamers rather than providing support for the concept of a more gender friendly industry/culture.

I'm going to be watching the internet explode tonight.

You know, you don't have to agree with everything a person says, or believe the same things they believe 100%, to enjoy the content they put out. Just saying...

This. Hell, I disagree with Sarkeesian on almost everything she says, but this night, I agree with her that games, the industry, and the community need to be more inclusive; and the attacks on female developers and even women unrelated to the industry (Felicia Day) prove this.

I swore up and down I wouldn't touch this GamerGate shit with a ten foot rod and a hazmat suit, but I had to get that out of my system.

Total Biscuit's interview with Stephen Totilo got a lot of criticism after it released. It prompted TB to go on 8chan to post a response.

Not condoning attacks, but they happen to everyone, male or female.
Also I don't think it was even a gamer that attacked Felicia Day.

I actually found Biscuit's interview with Totilo quite interesting. He was quite reasonable, and though I certainly didn't agree with Totilo, it was interesting to get his side of the argument and some actually cogent points from the other angle for once. Totilo raised a couple of really good points even, arguing the slippery slope paradigm, perhaps justifiably even.

Which isn't to say we should back off from the email blitzing of Gawker's advertisers or coverage of bits of nonsense like the Cernovich SWAT-ing one bit, it's just a reminder that we need to use foresight and care and understand that despite the screeching and the agitators, there's people on both sides with some good ideas to give. We owe it to ourselves to be bigger.

I am going to say, with nearly 100% certainty that the attack on Felicia Day was a false flag. We already have groups like SomethingAwful's FYAD and ED's GNAA dedicated to making the entire swath of public discourse in this affair worse for absolutely fucking everyone. Let us never forget that several of the initial Sarkeesian threats came from a Brazilian clickbaiting Journo working for Celebrinando and at least 2 of the initial Brianna Wu threats came from SomethingAwful - and those are just the tip of the iceberg.

I said this way back when this thread again, but it bears repeating: There's people who don't want us to have conversations or to discuss things like adults. There's the ones who are trying to provoke both sides for their own amusement, there's ones trying to profit from the disturbance somehow, and there's some that are doing it because of some percieved moral righteousness. The cause doesn't matter, though - the results are the same.

There's been so many false-flags that it's honestly become easier to list off the ones that weren't. It's really important to bear this in mind before taking any claim of threats or harassment at face-value until verified. That's not saying they're not happening - they clearly fucking are - but it's critical we note that there's people on both sides and outside of each that want this to get worse and want people pissed.
