This game is a perfect case study of buying a game blind before reviews were widely available.
Mortal Kombat? I love that arcade game! Sure, I'm a stupid kid who doesn't realize there's no way a gameboy can handle anything close to the arcade. I bought it, was severely dissapointed and still played the fuck out of it.
I recall KoF 95 and 96 (especially 96) were surprisingly playable for 2d fighters on the Game Boy
in other Neo-Geo to Game Boy ports
I actually have a cart of this, I strongly suspect it was a legit GBC port that got shitcanned as SNK went bankrupt before they reformed.

I was more in the GBC era and didn't have a lot of original GB games, but I played the crap out of Alleyway and Hatris. No that's not a typo, the creator of Tetris decided to do the same thing but with hats. It's not very good.

Alleyway however was always really fun, it's a ball-and-paddle puzzle game similar to Breakout.

you'd be better off getting one of those Lights from overseas with a beat to shit shell since it's pretty much the same thing but using AA batteries
The shell is also very easy to replace provided you have the right screwdriver! I clean up busted GBPs for fun and they're one of the easiest systems to work on, I haven't done a GBL yet but it looks like nearly the same. You can take a gamble with something busted and potentially fix it into something pretty great.

The downside is the GBL has an aura of "nooooooooo it's too rare don't mod it" with the r/gameboy cultists so the only replacements shells you can get for it are flat white, clear and diabetic piss yellow transparent, not even an option for classic grey or atomic purple.

Castlevania Belmont's Revenge is extremely underrated, being unfortunately sandwiched between Adventure (horrendous, but at least the music is good) and Legends (mediocre at best). It also has some of the best soundtracks for the whole franchise, and the Gameboy overall:

I should probably give that another try sometime. Kid Dracula is pretty good, and Operation C is great and on par with the NES Contras. Also Gargoyle's Quest is a neat game.

I was gonna say Metroid 2 but it's aged horribly
That's my favorite Metroid. Every once and I while I double check to see if it's become LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE but last I checked it was still ok.

Pretty fond of gb Samurai Shodown. gb Killer Instinct is weirdly semi-accurate even if there's probably no reason to pick it over any other version.

I think that's the same engine as KoF 95, and why they tossed Nakoruru in 95
but yeah the Neo-Geo style fits a lot better to two buttons
Kid Dracula is pretty good
iirc isn't it the same as the famicom game?

Super Mario Bros. DX was pretty nice, advertised as just SMB on the game boy but had a ton of extras

Speaking of Bomberman

It's basically Link's Awakening except with Bombs. You have to "capture" escaped monsters and defeat bosses in 4 different zones while collecting power-ups and creating new bombs and upgrading them. includes terrain-exclusive gear to progress and backtracking for new stuff. Game has good music too... shit will get stuck in your head for quite some time.

GBC in particular had some very weird "wait, what" things, like the port of the laser disc game Dragon's Lair
https://youtube.com/watch?v=4XiUvMowedAAlone In The Dark's usage of the high-color mode too

also it didn't get released but there was a port of Resident Evil 1, like afaik the actual PS1 game source code modified to run on the two buttons and dpad
There was a version of Daikatana for the GBC. Wasn't released outside of Europe and Japan for some reason. From what I've played, it's the best version of the game.

This was one of the ultimate gameboy games. It looked great, added alot of new mario stuff, and lasted a long time (for a kid anyway). Mario land 3 was also a great value.
I loved SML2 and WarioLand was even better.

Spent a long time playing more obscure stuff too - There was a 2-for-1 cart called 'Race Days' which had Dirty Racing and Jeep Jamboree (Dirty Racing was by far the best part)

Also Super Hunchback

I think the only real dud games I played were Bart vs The Juggernauts, and The Fidgetts (too hard for kid me).

There's some differences, I think. Either story or level design.
The GB versions is a "Pseudo-Squel", meaning it's both a remake and a sequel to the NES, which was more common than most people think. The GB Megaman games, for example, were both remakes and sequels to the official canon of the NES Megaman (essentially the GB games were 1.5 versions of the NES games as they fell in between them... MM2 -> MMGB -> MM3 -> MMGB2 -> etc...)

The only difference between the western versions and the japanese versions of the games is that the western versions censors the KKK-lookin ghosts with that Tibet good luck charm that everyone associates with Nazis on their forehead, so they're just plain old round headed ghosts.

I dug out my old Game Boy collection while moving recently and have been playing this non-stop since. If anyone's looking for a fun puzzle game that's super easy to learn and isn't Tetris I highly recommend it. Shit's more addicting than crack.
For the record, this game has a bajillion versions with different names spread across multiple consoles and is more popular in Japan than it is in the west. And a good chunk of them have sexy anime women in them.

For example, this one is on the Switch

Yes it's AI slop, yes it's WAY overpriced for what it is (currently $19.99), no I'm not saying you should go buy it, I'm just proving it exists

I've fairly recently picked up everdrive and paired with my GB Micro it makes for one helluva neat, tiny system to take anywhere. Full support for GB/C/A, NES, NeoGeo Color/Pocket, and Game Gear/Master system's entire libs on a mere 32gb microsd.

Back in the day though, I started with GBC and the fact that it had GTA and GTA2 was mind-blowing to me.

There is also a Qix game for the Game Boy Color called Qix Adventure. Was never released in the US sadly.
