So a buddy of mine who recently got into the sport, asked me why the Super League failed and how I would run it to make it better. Now dismissing the question would be the correct answer, it was a little fun thought experiment as to how creating a completely different Super league that would get all of Europe on board would work.
The idea would be to have 2 Leagues, European 1 and 2, that would be top of the pyramid. 20 teams each that promote and relegate each other. 3 goes up and 3 go down every year. The third division would be 3 divisions, east west and central, that would divide 60 teams into these divisions based on location. The top 3 teams in each division goes into a final promotion tournament (2nd vs 3rd in a 2 legged game and winner place 1st place). Relegation would be the bottom 5 teams in each of these leagues would be relegated plus the 15th place teams from each league would play a group round against each other with the bottom team being relegated and replaced by teams in the 4th division. Speaking of 4th division, that would be the top flight of each country, consisting of teams not in the European pyramid. There are currently 55 teams that allow for teams to qualify for Champions League, so that's how many leagues would cover the 4th division. Each of these league's would be required to finish by early march, so probably 12-16 teams in these leagues. Pyramid for 5th division and down would be left to each governing body as to how they would want to do their domestic style. Using a UEFA coefficient, made up since UEFA basically makes it up anyways, the top 8 countries use the top 4 for their league to enter into the promotion playoff, next 8 get 3, 17th 18th and 19th get 2, and the rest get 1 team. I did the math so don't worry, that's 98 teams. Teams would play each other for 4 games, 2 home and 2 away drawn at random, to create a pool that eliminates everyone until there are 64 teams remaining. The 64 get drawn into 16 groups of 4 to play 6 games like Champions League from last year. The group winner will play a group runner up in a 2 legged affair (group A winner plays group B runner up group B winner plays Group A runner up, Group C winner plays Group D runner up etc etc). Winner of those gets added to the 60 teams in the 3rd division. Since this competition would start in March, these games would be done by mid May, and they would be the only fixtures on the schedule.
As for domestic cups, each country gets 1 domestic cup that teams in the European League gets to play in each season. So England can still have the FA Cup, the Carling Cup and the EFL Trophy, but any team competing in the top 3 divisions can only compete in the FA Cup.
The idea behind this was to limit fixture congestion, still have games that mattered, and have a pathway for every team in Europe to make it into the top flight while giving off the intention of the Super League to have these big time games. Having the 4th divisions play their own tournament styled in how the European competitions were like before brings more attention to lower league clubs. The third division also having so many teams get relegated along with promotion playoffs makes those 3 leagues more interesting since relegation creates an urgency to compete, with a relegation scrap happening almost every week. And the top 3 teams being eligible for promotion means most games during the season should matter.
Its a fun thought experiment. Obviously, it isn't realistic to expect this nor do I want it, but gun to my head this is probably how I would create it.
