I believe it was David Joyner, who played Barney for 10 years, went on to become a Tantra "spiritualist healer", which is basically being a sex guru who charged hundreds of dollars to give women massages, giving them orgasms and refer to them as "goddesses". But his "love" as he describes it that comes through during Tantra healing extended to his time playing Barney as well, and has remarked at how infants stare at him as he's out and about and how much love they sense from him.

Of course a lot of the articles that depicted him in a more negative light for making vague, odd statements like that have been purged from the internet. This was about three or four years ago so it was just happening as the mainstream media was starting to associate being black with being saintly. I'm going to trawl around and see if I can find any articles that weren't scrubbed away.
