Sorry if this is off-topic, late, or retarded, but I need to make sure I'm understanding this correctly. I've seen shit say "adoptable" on it but never looked closely at it because it always looked like some generic furfag nonsense. I never knew what "adoptable" meant, and I just looked it up, and it sounds like "original character/design that I slapped together and you pay me for". Is that actually what it means, or am I missing something huge?

There's no way that's what it means, right? Can you actually just draw some random character and people will pay to "adopt" it as their own? Like, actual money? Who the fuck would pay for some random, generic character that someone else came up with? And if there IS a market for this, how's it not an IRL infinite money glitch? Because if that's actually what it means, what's stopping me from making like 20 deviantart accounts, targeting the most autistic groups (MLP, FNAF, furfags, minecraft, pridefags, etc.), churning out a million different generic OCs, and making a ton of money? It's not like anything I've seen looks special or interesting, so the bottleneck of creativity and originality is nonexistent.

Adoptables, by art definition, are pre designed characters that are sold usually with the intention of being used as a character by the buyer. If you can't draw or struggle with art, it's a great way to get something already made that you can take and adapt. But with that came the adoptable market. Big name artists make stupidly simple/overly complex designs, sell for huge price. People then resell or trade for a "dreamie", the cycle continues. A lot of people have started just selling ai designs on Etsy and giving out the same design multiple times, which defeats the purpose of it being a unique design.

Edit: Forgot to say that the market is highly unstable and sometimes people who oversaturate the market end up making bank one day then none the next. It's a big gamble and pretty annoying when people are charging rent for a fox dog you saw for 5$ on deviantart.

If you can swallow your pride and self respect enough to draw the sort of degenerate cookiecutter crap they like, yes, there's some money to be made there. Just look at all the crappy unoriginal adoptables on places like etsy; Someone is buying these. I don't know why, but they are selling to an audience.
 
One of the problems I see with furries in AI is how many of them want to make them as real as possible and while the results are crazy-detailed its also the stuff of nightmares.

NFTs weren't really selling an art piece, not at first at least
it was just a token, with an image attached to signify it- that's where i think they went wrong, they tried marketing it for the art, as opposed to for the token itself like any other crypto coin with the art just being a 'unique code' that humans can discern, it was just a way of saying "i have the pepe frog with the blue hat and the wizard staff" as opposed to "i have pepecoin number 828664927952973295.8=D"

adoptables are more like selling a design you can utilize, it's kinda what studios, animators and writers do at times for upcoming projects, except 100% less professional, run by internet kids, and with no intent to ever actually use it in anything creative
