Four members of the same family have been arrested after a nine-year-old boy was beaten to death at his home in the eastern French city of Mulhouse.

Police sources told local media that the boy had refused to do his homework and was hit with a broom handle.

The boy's elder brother, sister and stepsister were all present at the time of the incident.

Although his mother was not there, she too has been arrested and was aware of what was going on, reports say.

The boy's death in the early hours of Sunday prompted a vigil in the centre of Mulhouse among residents who rallied round his parents.

But the family's initial accounts of what had happened and the ensuing post-mortem examination prompted police to continue their investigation. Bruises were discovered on the boy's body, particularly on his feet, according to Alsace website DNA.

Although he had suffered a cardiac arrest, pathologists said the cause of death had been the blows he had suffered, DNA reported.

A police source was quoted as saying he had been struck by blunt objects.

The boy's mother had been away from home on a business trip but had actively encouraged his punishment because he did not want to do his homework, French media said.

The four members of the family were being held in custody in Mulhouse on Thursday and were due to appear before the local prosecutor ahead of a judicial investigation.

Although the 19-year-old elder brother is suspected of carrying out the killing, an investigating judge will try to shed further light on the tragedy.

The boy's death comes at a time when France's National Assembly is about to consider a ban on smacking.

The two proposals are for children to be entitled to an education free of violence, and for those in parental authority to be banned from using "means of humiliation such as physical or verbal violence, corporal punishment and moral abuse".

Can this be blamed on Fortnite?

Was the family a kek cult like the Manson family? Anyone with a IQ not to Sargon's standards or liking gets the bullet

Was the family kekistani? Seems like something a bunch of kekistanis would do.

Hmmmm, Mulhouse. That's in the Alsace region. I'm probably guessing that if religion was a motivating factor it's more likely to be Catholicism; the Religion of Peace is mainly practiced in the Parisian and Lyonnaise banlieues, not some normie town near the German border.

Personally, I think homework should only be given to children struggling with lessons. I always found it too frustrating to warrant any benefit outside of math. It was just a waste of time that didn't help me learn much of anything because I was just repeating stuff I already knew anyway. Just pay attention in class. That's really all you need for the most part.

Beating a kid to death because he won't do his homework? I'm thinking this family had major issues to begin with. It likely wasn't an isolated incident and it's probably a very abusive and dysfunctional household where they have any excuse to do violence.

The boy's death in the early hours of Sunday...

Mon Dieu. School isn’t until Monday, he still had almost a day to complete it. They couldn’t have waited to beat him to death until AFTER missing the deadline?

Because smacking a child and beating him to death are totally the same thing.
They’re obviously not, but I don’t know why everyone is so quick to justify physical violence against kids. Smacking your wife is illegal, but smacking your child is fine? It makes no sense.

I think that smacking is a good metaphor of shit happening in life if you don't take care of your responsabilities. Things like losing your job because you are slacking and going hungry/losing you house and utilities because of that are very abstract for a 10 year old to understand. But a bitchslap is much easier to comprehend.

I think that, if you are a good parent you won't be needing spanking, maybe a couple times when toddlers get to their bratty phase. But the truth is sometimes we can't be our best, or some kids learn more slowly or they just want to test the limits. In cases like that, I think spanking is justified as a way to make the kid understand that "If you fuck up, bad shit is going to happen".

But when its just used to vent the parent's frustration or it leaves a lesion on the kid... that's just outright abuse, a spank/bitchslap is one thing, a busted lip and racoon eyes is a whole other story.

Giving a kid a swat on the butt to correct misbehavior vs. using a blunt object to beat the kid to death is like comparing apples to roller skates.
