So how many of these idiots are shitting themselves after the horrible California massacre today?

I like to imagine these people's lives are nothing but getting red in the face about every perceived slight they encounter, simply to reinforce their victim complex at the expense of their blood pressure. Because it's funny to imagine a gay couple playing with their adopted kid and see one of these freepers turning red, spinning on his/her heel, and going home to write a badly articulated missive about an alternate America everything is going to hell because, to simply put it, 'America offends me on some level and that means everything is falling apart.'
 
@Zarkon So that means these guys are almost as bad, if not worse, than SJWs - I'm leaning toward worse, but I've proven wrong before quite a lot. Only because, for Conservatives, they sure don't seem to know how to live up to the title of what Conservative people actually do - the hint is not oppressing others with BS like religion and whatnot.

They're the Web 1.0 version of SJWs, but right wing cranky old man butthurt rather than blue-haired pierced young whatever butthurt.
 
The thing I love about this particular breed of right winger: for a group that demands that "nobody can tell ME what to do, big guvmint go home!", they sure are quick to tell other people what to do ("Muslims git out, die fags!").

I can't speak on SJWs, but I can speak on this from seeing people like it in real life. They're just full of judgmental anger and the worse part is that they enjoy it on some level. It gives their boring, dull lives a sort of drama they can always go back to when they need it. I think the rural nature of it really speaks volumes: devoid of things to engage on an intellectual basis or the lack of oppression to be what you have been deemed, they retreat into the hatred that won't shake up their little snowglobe of existence.

They're worse because they hold more institutional power in the US, and make up far more of the country's silent majority.

I think I remember one guy flipping his shit because he was at the park with his kids and he saw two women there holding hands. Some of the others seriously suggested he should call the police.

If you could describe the Freep userbase in a paragraph, this would be it. And this behavior isn't confined to the outside world, either; the Freep population is notoriously cannibalistic. I think the best example of this behavior comes from the site-wide ideological purges that pop up every year or two once JimRob's had a bit too much to drink.

Source for the following comes from this blog post, which has a great overview of Freep's history up to 2010, and my own personal field notes from on-site reconnaissance.

  • In 1999, libertarians and paleoconservatives were banished from the site in a mass purge. Neocons and social conservative leftovers from the Moral Majority reigned supreme. This was the first proper purge, and the few veteran Freepers that haven't died off or gotten banned yet call it the Night of the Long Knives. Unironically, mind you.
  • In 2000, JimRob soapboxed about his theory that the CIA was just a drug-running empire masterminded by George HW Bush. This made his son, George W Bush, unfit to be president because reasons. Anyone who told JimRob to his face how crazy he was acting got banned.
  • Later on that year when the inevitable sank in, JimRob faced the facts and declared that FreeRepublic would endorse George W Bush for president. Anyone who didn't get the memo got banned. They were now at war with Eurasia, and they have always been at war with Eurasia.
  • In 2002, some guy who got banned in one of the previous purges made an offsite for disgruntled Freepers (and that could never happen in a fine upstanding community like ours oh no perish the thought). While most offsite splinters are content to rot in some forgotten corner of the web, this particular offsite went to war. See, JimRob had a habit going back to the Usenet days where he would copy and paste news articles wholesale without sourcing them. When Free Republic got most of their income from ads, this exposed them to copyright infringement lawsuits and was a main reason that their revenue became (and continues to be) donation-based. The offsiters flagged as much content as they could. Anyone showing even an ounce of sympathy to the turncoats was banned from Freep.
  • In 2005, the Bush administration tried to pass some form of a guest-worker program so that the millions of undocumented immigrants in this country could get some semblance of a path to citizenship. Most populist conservatives opposed it en masse - but not JimRob. He used his swift banhammer of justice to make sure everyone on the site stayed in lockstep with his own personal opinions.
  • In 2007, the next presidential race was starting to gain in hype. While the Republican base was flirting with many candidates back then, for a few months Rudy Giuliani had his time in the sun. Anyone who admitted to supporting Rudy was banned, because he's a RINO -- that's Republican In Name Only. Gotta love that No True Scotsman fallacy.
  • Fortunately for Freep, everyone was pretty much united behind John McCain once he emerged as the victor - and especially once that damn Homomarxist Islamofascist Kenyan Usurper BALACK HUSSEIN OSAMA climbed to the top of the Democratic ticket. But if you remember one thing about the 2008 cycle, you'll remember that the Republicans never really liked John McCain all that much. Everyone had eyes for Sarah Palin. After McCain lost, everyone was buzzing about What Came Next for the plucky little Alaskan governor. The word "President" got thrown around a lot - especially on Freep. But not everyone thought it was a good idea to crown her as the nominee. So in 2010, JimRob declared that all must bow before the altar of Palin or become a blood sacrifice to her glory. The stairs of the temple ran slick with blood that day.
  • Sadly for JimRob, 2012 showed no sign of Palin seizing her destiny. While the field was still crowded with candidates, JimRob drew his line in the sand - the users of Free Republic would swear allegiance to Newt Fucking Gingrich. There were many Romney supporters at that time who took issue with this, so JimRob banned them all.
  • Later on that year, you might remember how Romney won the primary. Cue a repeat of 2000. JimRob hemmed and hawed about a third party until sometime around October, when he declared that Free Republic would stand for Romney. Those who asked about how all Romney supporters were banned earlier in the year were banned. Those who asked JimRob about his numerous rants against the "cult-like" Mormons were banned. The few that were left got in line and prepared to face ruin at the hands of the Dread Kenyan.

If you've made it this far, you'll note that we've been through at least nine purges. During each one, JimRob swept away a sizable chunk of his userbase. People who had been posting there for nearly a decade got the axe, even those who were major donors to the fundraising Freep-A-Thons. With no ad revenue, user donations were the only way to support the site's maintenance and let JimRob be a delusional Internet tyrant as his full-time job. And with a userbase essentially being carved in half with every purge, the donations started to shrink. It also doesn't help that the median age on Freep is probably old enough to collect Social Security. If JimRob doesn't ban them, the actual for real Grim Reaper will soon enough.

Needless to say, modern day Freep is a graveyard - especially when compared with what it used to be. Freepers were the ones who helped get the Monica Lewinsky ball rolling back during the Clinton years. Freepers were the ones who coined "Sore Loserman" back in 2000. Freepers were the ones who, at the height of the 2004 election, exposed the fraudulence of "authentic" documents showing George W Bush going AWOL during his time in the National Guard - even when Dan Rather and CBS took the hoax for the truth.

What once was a titan of the American right has eaten itself to death, and I can think of no fate more appropriate.

These purges are somewhat ameliorated by the fact that the half of the time they aren't purging the populace, they're running "freepathons" to keep the site funded which, since it costs nothing to run and nothing whatsoever has been done to make it look or run better since the '90s, means funding RimJob's jenkem habit.

These are notorious for going along like they're not going to make their goal up until the last minute or so when RimJob himself probably donates money to himself to make it look like they made it. It's basically unbelievable.

However, they can't purge the population and beg it for money at the same time, so moderation is incredibly uneven.

I think you're spot on. A lot of "Conservative, Christian, Patriot, 2A, Pro-NRA, Pro-Israel, Proud Infidel" types are like the angry flipside of left-wing SJWs.

They love to shriek nonstop about liberals, foreigners, immigrants, Islam, gun control, Black Lives Matter, political correctness, Benghazi, Obama, & Hillary.

They're angry, obsessive, self-righteous, and judgmental.

They love being assholes, bullies, contrarians, & drama whores.

Sorry for the necro but I just went down memory lane with these guys and have a lot of content that hasn't been brought up in this thread yet.

According to the RationalWiki page for the Freepers, in 2007 these guys stalked a 12 year old for being a democrat and asking President Bush not to cut some school programs over the radio. (http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Free_Republic)

However my favorite posts are all the "Obama made me racist" ones, suck as:

The Left doesn't seem to realize it, but they've been accusing me of judging people by their skin color for far too long. They've shot themselves in the foot.

I would not buy a house next to blacks.
I would not want to sell my house to blacks.

I was a very different person 4 years ago. Now I'm all done. If the KKK comes to my door, I'd probably sign up.
