These are names I've not heard for a long time. Reminds me of when games like Nexius were a thing.

On the topic of old stuff. There was an open source fan sequel to UFO/XCOM called UFO:AI.
The game hasn't been updated in a long time, and last time I tried to play it it didn't work on modern windows.
 
I also forgot to mention Warsow (FOSS): https://warsow.net It's rather unique as it had an e-sports (yes, yuck) scene when e-sports were at their peak with SC2/Dota 2/CSGO. Tournaments still exist, as the community is very skill-focused.

A lot of those projects are dying, devs getting old, and new generations are not interested it the same genre of games. Nexuiz still exists in it's fork, Xonotic.

Encore is itself a mod of Doukutsu-rs, which is the definitive way to play the original now. Native widescreen, you can add custom soundtracks, and you can import graphics/music/challenges from most of the official releases. You can even import the visual changes from the Switch version if you have that.

What’s wrong with GOG?
Try OpenTyrian2000. The readme links to the Tyrian 2000 files.
 
OFF is my perpetual recommendation to anyone who likes weird/outsider art games. It's technically a JRPG but there's very little grinding, a lot of weird and a good soundtrack. Runs about 5 hours to beat, 8 hours to 100%.

In “OFF” you take control of a mysterious person called “The Batter”, who is described to be on an important mission. The Batter, and yourself as his controller, are dropped off in zone 0, the first of 4 zones in a perplexing, unknown world about which you slowly find out more and more in the process of the game.

Other than that, this is absolutely a game you want to go into blind so I'd suggest not clicking around on that wiki if you have interest.

As a Dink fan myself, I must mention that the GOG version of DinkHD is severely outdated because Seth is lazy about such things. If you want to play it, check out either his official website or the mirrored upload over on The Dink Network.

And if you're a Linux nerd and want a native version of it, while there was FreeDink, it hasn't been updated in about a decade or close to. There is however a fork of Freedink called YeOldeDink that has been receiving fixes/updates.

PS: TDN has close to ~400 DMODs and among those, some are way better than the original/main story. Worth checking out for sure. There's also a mod manager there that should make life easier for playing them.

Edit: In terms of more recent mods for it, I highly recommend checking out Cursed Blades part 1: Charlie's Legacy.
