this sprint qualifying is going to be a travesty. I would not be surprised if there are zero overtakes for the whole sprint qualifying. With no mandatory pitstops, you can't guarantee you would have a pitstop "in hand" to gain an advantage through strategy.

liberty media really fucked themselves because of the way they have to get team approval to implement this kind of thing. Anything cool, like a sprint qualifying with a large number of points handed out followed by reverse grid, would be countered by enough of the top teams to block any sort of idea from happening. Imagine if there were a race 1-race 2 type format where you get reverse grids 1 through 10 get reversed. Then Red Bull, Mercedes, Mcclaren, Ferrari, would no doubt all be against the proposed idea, and if one more team votes against you have less than half of the teams in favor of it. So we are stuck with the horrible version that doesn't add anything to the weekend and is basically just an extended version of the race with a competition caution thrown in.

Speaking of which, let's take a moment to be thankful that (at least for now) we have not embraced nascar-style gimmicky playoff structures and have stayed with a straight-up points format through the whole season. (Imagine the nascar playoffs happening on Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi)

If sprint qualifying is going to be a thing, it might as well be a Top 10 shootout format like the one that the Bathurst 1000 has used for years.

Watched a bit of Formula E just now.
Man, that sport is lackluster. The cars don't even do a full lap to warm up tyres before a race, they just do a little burnout on the grid before the race starts.
The track is narrow and short, it looks like a Go-Kart track and I'm not even trying to make a joke. The racetrack literally looks like it's an attraction at a fair.
The """engine""" sound is atrocious as ever, attack mode is a farce and people drive around like it's bumper cars.

I *really* want to like this sport, but it's about as appealing as racewalking.

Formula E would be fine even with the parking-lot tracks and it's silly noise. The main issues with it are that it markets itself as the future of racing while simultaneously relying on stupid gimmicks that actively make the whole thing a farce of an affair. It mainly serves as a depository for drivers who aren't good enough to be in F1 these days.

Fan boost is pretty much a result of a bunch of middle ages suits trying to think what the kids like and one suggesting their kid is always on that twitter thing. Social media integration is a cancer ripping it's way through any form of entertainment.

Idk if you guys saw this but according to this simulation, Verstappen was likely to t-bone the short end of the pit entry wall in Baku after his tyre failure.

I didn't really consider this at the time, but this makes Pirelli look even worse, trying to cover their ass when we could be dealing with serious injuries (and just hitting the opposite side wall at a lower angle such high speed looked really nasty). Hope this will be re-profiled next time.

Well they are introducing the heavier construction rear tyres from Silverstone. Same compound but stiffer and stronger side walls to prevent it happening again. It's been pushed through by the FIA as a regulation change for safety but it is going to alter the balance of the cars (only the rears are changing) and the speculation is its going to be good for merc who tend to warm their rears more than the others.

I did consider it at the time and it gave me the heeby-jeebies.
At the time, I didn't realize how laughably lackluster the barriers on the pit entry are, though. I assumed it would be like the massive bulk of barriers at Monaco after the tunnel, that protects cars during head-on crashes into the next chicane.

Now that I've seen how little protection that side has... fuck. Both accidents happened at great speeds, but thankfully, the cars just skidded down a long straight without hitting anything too harshly, but imagine this happening in a huge group of cars with several cars going top speed being wiped out. Imagine this happening just before the braking point when the car is still going top speed. Just imagine this happening with a group of cars close behind. This could have turned out like the Correa/Hubert crash.
The crash looked way less fearsome than Grosjean's crash, but just a tiny detail being different could have made this turn out just as devastating.

F1 driver Lando Norris ‘shaken’ after being mugged at Euro 2020 final

British Formula One driver Lando Norris was mugged after attending the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy at Wembley on Sunday, his McLaren team said.

The team added in a statement the 21-year-old had his watch stolen.

“Thankfully, Lando was unharmed but he is understandably shaken,” the team added.

“The team is supporting Lando and we are sure that racing fans will join us in wishing him all the best for the British Grand Prix this weekend.”

“As this is now a police matter we cannot comment further,” it added.

Media reported the watch was worth £40,000 and was taken as he approached his McLaren sports car near the stadium.

Norris is friendly with several of the England players who lost the final on penalties after extra time ended 1-1.

The driver is fourth in the championship and has been on the podium three times so far this season.

Police made some 53 arrests at Wembley after supporters clashed with each other and officials, breached security cordons and charged into the perimeter area before the start of the match.

Thankfully nothing happened to him, it's not like losing that watch is much of a deal to someone this rich, he's safe, that's the only important thing.

But man, how much you wanna bet that watch is going to be pawned off for a pittance, so the mugger can buy a bottle of gargle blaster.
To think the guy could have instead stolen a car that's most likely worth enough money to buy a small apartment. *yawn*

looks like mercedes and lewis are beefing up the social justice nonsense once again. I still can't believe it is called the fucking hamilton commission.

But to be fair, I can remember when Michael Schumacher forced his team to create the Schumacher commission to investigate...uh...just kidding, no I can't. This is a new level of narcissism and entitlement.

Local copy is attached in case any of you want to see what it says, don't give that website any clicks.

i dont give a fuck what hamilton has to say and after he loses the wdc and wcc this year hopefuly we can stop pretending he matters. ferrari is doing more than this fucking asshole will ever do with their girls on track programme

Let me guess, Choco Senna will come out and do some protest in the British Grand Prix. Everything will conspire for him to win, then dedicate the victory to the Three Bucks Lions and lift the trophy wearing either a BLM shirt or an England shirt with Saka's name and number behind.

It's all getting tiresome and only makes me want to scream the n-word at someone.

This sprint race deal has potential to fuck some people up for the GP. Let's say Lewis and Max tangle in first corner a bit and they both suffer wing or tyre damage and have to pit. Then they are basically starting the GP from last few rows.

There is potential for drama, especially if the front runners try and take it easy, to get to the GP unscathed, and the mid-fielders go kamikaze to try and get better grid positions. Its going to be interesting to see how the sprint plays out and if any serious events occur causing the GP grid to be abnormal.

Here's to hoping Mazepin goes full LERoooooooy JEEEEENkiiiiiins and slams into Hamilton at some point. jk

I mean, if you end up with too much damage, it might be impossible to even participate in the race.

Just to be a pedant, FanBoost hasn't worked through Twitter this season - possibly also last season, I don't care enough to remember or look back - it's through a dedicated voting webpage.
Before this season, Sam Bird never got FB because he doesn't have any social media presence, this season he's gotten it a few times now; although most of the drivers getting FB are the same as before, because people being daftly nationalistic about people who left that country as soon as possible.

Formula E crying the cars would be able to go too fast without daddy FIA cutting their energy storage allowance.

What a joke...

I'm expecting it to be like the first F2 sprint race in this new 3 race formula where everyone drives super carefully and takes no risks to bring it home roughly where they started to not ruin their weekend.

The only thing that's going to make it interesting is the tyres, with no oitting those who go crazy at the beginning will struggle and lose places later. Possibly a great format for Perez to come through at the end but I don't think the race is long enough for this to be a major thing either.

It's not even like there are minor places points so if you're sat in 10th, for example, is it really worth risking going for 9th just to get a bit further up the grid?

We gotta figure out how to replace Crofty with Gus Johnson. Now only is he my favorite commentator of all time, especially outside of motorsports, but he can say this classic during quali

But besides that, about sprint qualifying...what I think will actually impact the weekend more is that the teams only get 1 hr of practice before parc ferme.
