Hunt is liked because while he was an inconsistent driver in spite of his immense speed, the man really lived the peak F1 glamour lifestyle. Lauda might be in the garage every saturday night, thinking about the next race set-up and thinking hard about every corner. Meanwhile, Hunt would go out for a beer or ten, go back to his hotel with a girl or two, come out with an STD and/or hangover and still put down a fine sunday performance at the track.

Yeah, he definitely live a life style that made "dead at 45 from a heart attack" not so surprising. Not a lifestyle anyone could live while managing to still race these days.

Apparently he and Gene "had different visions for the future of the team". What that could be is anybody's guess. Could be driver selection, technical partnerships, could be realistic vs unrealistic. Or could be selling up and getting the hell out.

Either way DTS producers must be crying. Last season he was basically all they had.

Makes sense, ultimately in F1 you need to spend big on development as there are loads of bits you can't just buy. Unlike say indie where you buy a chassis and an engine. It's not something you can do on a shoestring budget and expect success.

I doubt Haas are pulling in enough sponsorship and winnings to break even on the $135 million cap.

Bang for you buck is something you can strive for but underfunding and expecting success isn't going to happen.

I think Steiner has done a great job keeping that team going and capable of picking up points (well except for the Russian tank season). Though I don't blame him of he got fed up of trying to fight his way up the grid with little investment.
 
So one of my NY resolutions was to try and get back in to watching motorsports after a very sad and lacklustre 2023 that saw my whole enthusiasm for viewing races basically go in the shitter. I still don't know why I lost so much interest as past years I would spend many hours on Sat/Sun watching F1/Indy and many of the junior series, including the ones that start up before F1 testing even begins.

Now that we are in week 2 of 2024, those series are starting up. So, this weekend we get the first round of races in the "winter" Formula Regional Middle East & F4 UAE series at Yas Marina. While the drivers are very young and junior in these low level series, some of them in 5 years time will no doubt be knocking on the doors of the major series. The racing can be quite good too so, while might not be everyone's cup of tea, I hyperlinked the YT channels for both series above as the races should be carried live as they have been in the past and you may want to check them out if you are looking to start off your live racing action early.

Finally, for those that give a shit and can easily watch the "race", the electric lawnmower series kicks off this weekend too in Mexico City. 7 former champions will be competing so if nothing else, at least the past has shown variety with winners/champions. But that doesn't help too much in making the races enjoyable to be honest. Plus the races I have watched, the tracks are always very weird configurations but I get the reasoning behind it. I *might* download and watch it early next week but I won't be watching it live.
