So Merc copies AM and AM copies Red Bull. Can we call the new AM the Green Bull?

It would just be way too hilarious if Merc actually copied something from AM just at the moment AM ditched it cause it sucked.
Looking forward to this race, and sincerely hoping that Merc will either not do much of a recovery or that Russel outperforms Hamilton some more. Either way, I'm fine.
If Russel was so strong the rest of the season that it became a three-way battle for the title between him, Verstappen and Leclerc, all I could say is: Get Norris into the mix!

Nah we want AM to come up with pure genius and end up with a final race decider between Stroll and Vettel. No idea who I would pick in that fight. Vettel has always been "my guy" but Stroll winning the WDC would be like the ultimate troll.
Lance Stroll doing a Rickstroll on the 2022 season would be fantastic.

The Mercedes suddenly looks good. It's so close to being a decent car that could bring it to the Red Bulls and the Ferraris, but we will see how it pans out come the race.

I will relish three competitive teams trading fours in the drivers and constructors championship, though it will be a false dawn if Mercedes really have spunked their annual development budget to arrive a this point. I will take some solace from watching Toto chocking down Rich Tea biscuits because the team can no longer afford custard creams.

FIA looked into AM "copying" and apparently AM can prove they had windtunnel tested this design back in Nov.

I guess the most likely explanation is that they had a very similar design in November, that they didn't pursue for whatever reason and now saw RB's design, checked out some details, figured out how to make their own version better and try that out now.

I sincerely hope the upgrade nets us another Vettel podium.

Well going off qualifying if AM did copy they didn't do a very good job.

Barcelona is the ultimate test of a car chassis and suspension. If a car does not have good performance in those areas you will not drag it higher up the grid no matter how well you drive it. It seems the Williams, AM and AT are the poorest there (with Alpine not showing well eiter).

I'm surprised how much this upgrade has helped Mercedes.

Damn shame to see that McLaren have lost their way in 2022. Getting outqualified by both Haas drivers is embarrassing for a once great giant in F1.

Besides the battle at the front between Max and Charles, I am really enjoying George Russell against Hamilton this year.

It will be a major blow to Hamilton's reputation if he loses this year to his team mate.

To be fair this is Barcelona a track that is rather forgiving. Let's see how those upgrades work with the coming tracks (Monacco and Baku) I assume Merc will drop down a bit on those tracks. Plus we don't know how their revamped car is treating the tyres.

That and if the rumors are true, this is pretty much it in terms of upgrades. Merc has thrown in everything they can, while most other teams still have some room for improvements.
It's not entirely unreasonable to assume that Merc will be pushed back a little based on future upgrades to other cars and when there's a track that doesn't suit the Merc at all (basically anything with fast corners), they are going to plummet even harder.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's one weekend where they perform well in qualifying cause the circumstances suits their setup and then the raceday is a bit colder and their car is instantly utter garbage.

Well they seem to have patched the one weakness that is also the key to defeat Ferrari: straightline speed. Ferrari wasn't the fastest in the first sector which in essence is the long straight and some fast corners. So Hamilton might think that he can simply sail past the Ferraris on the straight. Think is though if Ferrari builds the gap in the other 2/3rds of the track straightline speed won't help

With straightline speed, the question is: Is this simply due to Merc giving up on downforce and focusing on long straights? If so, any racetrack with fast corners will become even more of a problem. In Miami, they managed to keep up with the top teams somewhat thanks to the very, very long straight. Whether their upgrades improved the car will only show in sectors where you need a lot of downforce.

But remember the phase right after the Safety Car: the Mercs were behind both top teams and a few laps later the Ferraris and RedBulls were long gone especially Leclerc and Verstappen. I think Ferrari and RedBull have reserves they can activate as needed. Just look at the Qualifyxing 7 tenths on one lap in Quali mode is a lot. Of course this won't translate to race pace but again I think the Top 2 hoild back in the race to prolong the life of their cars

So apparently tire deg is expected to be massive due to the heat and 2 stops, possibly 3, will be necessary. If Merc have made a good improvement or track conditions will help them the race could be an entertaining Spanish GP for a change.

Merc are quite weak on pace compared to Ferrari in sector 3 though so they might struggle to be within DRS by the time they get to the straight.
