Our 7th Anniversary Celebration is less than a week away and we’re feeling less than celebratory. As a team we’ve decided that while we will move forward with the planned feature release and recognition of Flight Rising’s 7th anniversary, it won’t be a celebration like it has been in the past.

We’ve discussed our plans for Monday June 8th and we’ve discussed the events happening nationwide in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. We don’t know what’s going to happen between now and our scheduled anniversary event. While we remain dedicated to being an online space where players can visit as an escape and for entertainment, we also can’t pretend the day to day is operating as usual. Because it isn’t and shouldn’t, until there is justice.

Across the nation, in cities like Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, Boston, Los Angeles, Portland, and our own capital, Washington D.C., we’ve seen peaceful demonstrations turn violent. But this violence isn’t due to the choices and actions of Americans peacefully exercising their 1st Amendment Right. It’s been the choices and actions of these cities' leadership and police departments that are escalating the peaceful demonstrations—demonstrations that are demanding racial justice and an end to police brutality—into riots and violence.

As for us, our Terms of Use and Rules & Policies couldn’t be clearer:

We do not tolerate hate speech, hatred, and discrimination on our site and within our community. Furthermore, we have zero tolerance for any content that celebrates, glorifies, or otherwise promotes the vile ideology of white supremacy. This is our corner of the internet. Our space. Some of you might remember them getting into hot water a little while ago for one of their admins, Thrage, making some highly transphobic comments on his facebook page.

Darren Hill is also a police officer in Pasco County, Florida. Here is an article from last march corroborating both his employment as a cop, and his integral role in founding Flight Rising.
Darren Hill began work on a video game of his own back in 2005, when he met freelance artist Jessica Peffer on the Shadow Council server in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft. Peffer mentioned to Hill over voice chat that she wanted to make a game involving dragons. He offered to do a quick demonstration for her, and it led to their first project — Flight Rising.
“I don’t know if we could call that starting development on it, but that’s when we started getting the idea together,” says Hill. “We started creating some scripts, playing around with design ideas, things like that.”
Eventually, Hill decided to leave California and move back home to Florida to become a sheriff’s deputy. Blizzard called him on the day he left, asking if he had time for an interview. He turned it down. Although he would have enjoyed working for Blizzard, his mind was already made up. He was going into law enforcement. It’s a decision he doesn’t regret.
Flight Rising’s admins have failed to make any official comment on the Thrage controversy; maybe it was more of an inconvenience to their bottom line than a real concern about the safety and comfort of their users.
Flight Rising apparently isn’t a safe space for transpeople, and now for black users either; what other nauseating opinions are their staff harboring?
Take heed of whom you’re directly supporting. And in case you needed the reminder, they kept Thrage on their payroll as a coder too – an announcement they slid in just as the upset about his disgusting transphobic meltdown was dying off.

Something I remember reading but can't seem to find is that it was meant to be an "anti-fandragon"... Basically a dragon made for the sole purpose of shaming something/someone. Which is already pretty fucking autistic.
It also doesn't help that it's most likely a lie, with how they previously referred to him as a "handsome bad boy"...

At one point, the site staff stepped in and wiped both the dragon's name and bio, and as far as I'm aware, that's where it ends. If there was anything else after that, I can't seem to find it.

Update: Emergency Maintenance Hello everyone! We have an update for you on today's unscheduled maintenance. At approximately 14:00 server time today, March 31st, we detected an attempted cross-site scripting (aka, XSS) attack. (1/4)

On top of that, a top skin maker on the site got banned for "multi-accounting" because the user apparently made an account when they were 14, had no idea what they were doing, came back later, made a new one, and staff "saw" the emails were the same and took the user out back.

I wanted to keep things quiet until I got a concrete response from staff to avoid mass hysteria. thankfully they have been very fast about getting back to me! here's a tldr:

• I had registered accounts in 2016 as a 14 year old before I registered brightmyth (locked account).
• an investigation that 'spanned several weeks' occured, likely caused by me creating a support centre ticket with an email registered to an old account a while ago to report my skin name completely breaking site HTML.
• staff investigated and found evidence of multiaccounting from these accounts transferring items and funds over to brightmyth.
• the account lock reason is for multi, not RMT or art theft as I have heard people speculating.
• staff initially deleted my skins and accents thread to avoid people sending prepayment to a locked account. upon my request, they undeleted it and locked it instead so the info it contained is still accessible. they also removed all of my pending AH listings, upon my request.
• I will have to register a new account! brightmyth cannot be accessed anymore.

I'm not terribly broken up about staff's decision, because I did I break the rules and did make terrible choices six years ago. I do wish we had an easier way to come clean about old accounts. there's not a good way to have them locked without guaranteeing that all of your accounts will be nuked at once.
I've asked for my current skin orders to be pre-emptively denied so I can resubmit them on a new account, and I'll be figuring out what to do about my pending public skins. if anyone has more questions, feel free to ask.

I was surprised to see they actually provided details on the attack. They could have been vague or not said anything at all like any other game does when shit hits the fan.
Kind of shocked they were even able to see the attack as I am sure either most games don't care or won't sink enough time/money into it to have enough security to even see attackers.

At approximately 14:00 Server Time on Friday, March 31 the engineering team was alerted to an individual probing for XSS (Cross-Site Scripting) weaknesses by pasting HTML script tags in various text fields on the site, some player-facing and some only visible to staff. Out of an abundance of caution we put the site into maintenance so we could evaluate the situation.

During the maintenance period, we reviewed the attacker's activity, focusing in particular on what fields the attacker typed script tags into. Then, we reviewed what pages (player-facing and staff-facing) display the contents of those text fields, whether those pages are properly escaping the text in question to prevent XSS vulnerabilities, and whether anyone viewed those pages while they potentially contained text content from this attacker.

Because it is part of our development practices to evaluate all new and revamped/refactored features for XSS vulnerabilities, we could not find issues in player-facing areas such as Forums, Private messages, Clan Info, or Dragon Biographies, or our primary staff-facing tools. We did identify and correct issues in some of our rarely used staff-facing tools that were not used while this attacker was active. Additionally, we identified some extremely old code that had potential issues and corrected them, but these areas are not areas where content entered by the attacker could have been viewed by another player or staff.

While XSS has a broad scope, one of the major concerns in any XSS attack is the potential that session cookies—tokens stored in your browser that "prove" that you are a particular logged-in user—could be stolen by an attacker, allowing them to essentially be "logged in" as you without knowing your password. Our session cookies are all set to use the "HttpOnly" flag which means that scripts categorically cannot access them. Barring vulnerabilities in browsers themselves, we do not believe session cookies were immediately at risk. Nonetheless, we revoked all outstanding staff and volunteer moderator sessions early on in our investigation as a safety measure.

Again, while we do not believe player sessions were at risk for the above reasons, if you wish to revoke all outstanding sessions for your account, including those for browsers/devices other than the one you are currently interacting with the site with, you can change your password either via Account Settings or the Forgot Password feature.

In addition to reviewing our existing code, we also looked into ways to detect and block this sort of behavior proactively. We have made some initial changes in that area and we are going to continue to improve our security posture by adding additional layers of protection, detection and alerting. Please bear with us as some of these changes may introduce minor bugs while we fine-tune things.

In summary, at present we believe this individual was at the stage of probing for vulnerabilities, and we used the maintenance period to review and strengthen our protections against this sort of attack. We do not have reason to believe the attacker accomplished anything of major concern at this point.

If you believe you have found a vulnerability of any kind anywhere on Flight Rising, please disclose it to us privately using Contact Us right away.

first off: yes, I am august brightmyth! this isn't my original account and no, this isn't an april fool's prank.

I am pinging my general list + the people who ordered the black color of my kitsune skin because this is relevant to you as well.


a) for reasons I won't be discussing on site, this is my new skin thread. (my old thread was deleted for a few hours to avoid people sending money into the void. at my request, it has since been restored.)

b) I do plan to continue making skins as normal and using my original pinglist. please make a note of my new username and shop name to avoid confusion! if you would no longer like to be pinged for my skins & accents, please find and remove your name.

c) I am attempting to find out if I am able reprint designs from my old catalogue, or if they need to be edited so they will be distinct from the ones already on site. consider these skins all retired for now. I'll resume my blueprint printing policy when I know more.

finally, I need to sort out the details of the kitsune skin! I asked for all my listings on the AH to be removed since they can no longer be bought out. unfortunately, this means I don't know who didn't receive their skin.

So, as a member of the community who would be using one of the already-released vistas personally, I have been wondering about posting this because, frankly, it bothers me?

FR is a great place. We generally don't have any reason to not be who we are here. Very accepting. Good job, everyone. I can honestly say I do not need pride here. This is, I think, the goal.

That's why the vistas situation really rubs me the wrong way. Because the vistas are about showing what we are. About, if you will, labeling ourselves. So you know what that means? That means our straight and cis friends apparently don't need labels.

They reinforce the idea that Straight is Standard. And uh. Cool. Cool, cool, cool.

I'm not sure what the flags would be for these things - I wouldn't use one of them myself. I'm sure there are some genuinely-intended flags for these identities, and I'd like to see that.

Especially because I was considering the idea of using these for dragon bios and if I had just all of my dragon bios displaying the correct sexuality flag then the straight ones would get, I guess... any other vista! So we're just left to assume that my "unlabeled dragons" are straight. And if you don't think that's odd, I don't know what to tell you.

As an additional bonus, maybe we get more of that sweet background that all the ribbons shared.

This is their stupid ass staff's reason for locking the thread even though the suggestion is about something on the site and that already exists and the user just wants an extension. I bet staff assumed it was a troll and shut that shit down before the alphabet soups got mad.

YES I know that Christmas isn’t coming anytime soon, but I just got this idea for a NPC I had to share!
Santa Claws! Claws because he’s a dragon and dragons have claws. Silly pun idea, I know, lol.
He could play a role similar to Susie and other holiday shopkeepers, being a Grand Exchange shop seller that sells various winter holiday themed apparel. He could sell Santa hats and coats as well as other Santa themed apparel, and perhaps he could have apparel items for other holidays celebrated around winter time such as Menorahs and dreidels to represent Hanukkah and some sparklers to represent New Years. It’d be great for there to be some Hanukkah apparel so that the Jewish folk on this website can have things to represent their culture!
I don’t think there’s any apparel and familiars that exist at this moment to represent things like Christmas or Hanukkah or other holidays that take place during winter, but having a Santa Claus themed shopkeeper would be a great chance to add in some! Or, at the very least, add in a Galore like Santa Claws shopkeeper who gives players Christmas presents throughout the month of December. Perhaps there could be a new chest type added that’s a holiday wrapped gift and inside of the chests is the various winter themed apparel.
Apparel could include things like Christmas trees, Christmas tree lights and ornaments, wrapped gifts, and perhaps even a Christmas tree themed familiar? That’d be so cute!
My one concern for this idea for a Santa Claus shopkeeper is that Night of the Nocturne is also going on during December, though NoN doesn’t take place until near the end of the month, so a solution for this could be having Santa Claws be around for most of December - once again in a similar vein to Love is in the Air - rather than just at the end while Night of the Nocturne is going on.

If needed I can clarify some things, I’ll definitely update the OP later on to be more organized. Let me know what you think and what other ideas you have for something like this!

While Santa Claus as we know him in 2023 is a fictional and secular figure for the purpose of stories, songs, and sales, he's still sourced from and based on St. Nicholas, a real person and a religious figure in a real world religion. Our world of Sornieth has its own holidays to celebrate and we take care that our in-game and in-world holidays are our own. In fact, the last two weeks of the year see us celebrating the Night of the Nocturne! Be sure to check it out when the event starts!

I think the only time they have not bent the knee for the community is for things that fill their pockets. Like Light Sprites. This doesn't just relate to current events either. They reworked the entire beastclan lore because of bullshit like this too.

We will be adding a disclaimer to the Beastclans on the Rise page in our encyclopedia and removing the video from our Youtube channel. The Beastclans on the Rise page will be removed from the encyclopedia index, as it is no longer canon lore, but will remain on site, linked from this post and the reworked Beastclans index once it is available.

• This disclaimer will note this lore is no longer canon and undergoing a rework for the reasons stated in this post.
• We are not deleting the page as accountability. The fact is, the US culture and institutions we (Flight Rising team members) grew up in clearly had influence and impact on our early work. We released this as official content and it’s wrong to pretend we didn’t.
• The Beastclans will still be in Adventure Mode, but the standing of relations with dragons will be greatly changed; you don’t need to start from a place of horror to have impactful quest lines and objectives.
• When reintroduced, dragons will no longer have been vying for territory with the Beastclans. There will still be conflicts and mysteries for players to find solutions for and story opportunities available, and we think that this change can make Sornieth and Adventure Mode all the richer for it.

We will be rewriting and expanding each Beastclans entry to have as much information about each Beastclan as a player would get with a new species of dragon, and conflict with the dragons will not be the central focus.
When we add a Beastclans Encyclopedia entry, we will also be including a new illustration, new familiars, and a scene from their territory.

We will look into having new Beastclans shopkeepers in the future, so that players can have ways before Adventure Mode to positively interact with the Beastclans.
Beastclans will also remain on the Dominance board. They present a non-player controlled faction, they are a force unto themselves, and they serve a necessary gameplay function.

As the Sisters warred and the Starseer isolated himself in the far reaches, new peoples rose from the devastated ruins of the Second Age. These "beastclans" saw promise in the shattered land. They could heal it and make it their own. The ancient technology and magic that had lead to such ruin was hidden from sight and wiped from memory. The beastclans started anew, taming the land and healing the destruction of an ancestor they would never know.

For a time, there was peace.

But soon the world shook and darkness rained from the sky. The mysterious Pillar that seemed eternal ...had shattered. Terrified and uncertain, the beastclans fought amongst themselves over who or what had ushered in this catastrophe.

The cause soon made itself known. Dragonkind was forged to war and claim territory in the name of its eleven patrons. These giants tore through beastclan lands, their elemental magics and titanic size too great to stand against. Nations that had taken generations to build were obliterated and remade into wyrm caverns and roosts. Many clans were completely decimated. Those that remained were isolated from their bretheren. The beastclans were forced into hiding. The dark, inhospitable reaches of the land became safeholds and refuges.

How could they hope to challenge such a monstrous foe...? In order to survive, they knew they would need to work together. The various clans began to send missives, hold secret meetings, and plan. Under the guidance of the great harpy, Talona, they proposed to do what their fragmented enemies could not: Unite and drive their foe from the land.

It adds a beard and moustache to the dragon, and people were wanting a parallel gene for the new Dusthide dragon breed since they're all about digging and could therefore look like dwarves. But this is current year and we can't have nice things:

It adds a beard and moustache to the dragon, and people were wanting a parallel gene for the new Dusthide dragon breed since they're all about digging and could therefore look like dwarves. But this is current year and we can't have nice things:

The PVP forum is horrid. Too easy to find content there if you're absolutely desperate for bullshit. Just scroll through the pages until you find locks which indicated a locked thread and typically it is drama filled. There's also several users who are just assholes to everyone and once you find one of them, just sift through their forum history from their profile.

I'm also pro not-putting-babies-in-bondage-gear, because ew, but ffs we all know that bondage accessories are sexual. It's too easy to find content on all of FlightRising tbh. I feel like I'm a babysitter in a minefield whenever I talk to other players on-site, it's ridiculous.

June 8th marks the 11th anniversary of the site, so we have a new sitewide event. Similar to Dustcarve Dig, Unfathomable Odyssey has you collecting items to turn in that you obtain through site activities such as the coliseum, gathering, familiar bonding. There are three phases and three milestones to be met before the rewards will be given. If it's anything like DD, then it's likely at the end of the event to fully reveal Fathom dragons alongside maybe eggs/scrolls of the new breed.

A new NPC was introduced through this event. Of course staff couldn't help bring in that good ol' queer representation.

I have a topic to start on; Dark Mode
It took them 13 years to come out with a dark mode, they announced it would be "coming soon" a month or so ago, and now its "out" but its a rolling release and only like, two pages have it (only slightly exaggerated). Currently it is experimental for most of it, but thankfully I haven't ran into any issues. Its also a huge bummer the banner doesn't have tint options at least because it feels over saturate and in your face vs the darkmode, though I could just add that to my adblocker and move on with life I guess.

Also I never thought about it like this and it's true. The colors made such a huge difference.


Even if their code was complete dogshit there is NO WAY it is this hard for them to make a dark mode, and I am speaking from personal experience here. The specialty add-ons had better dark mode than this. And the new icons look like mobile app icons too. The old backgrounds and theme banners now don't personally feel like it fits the new layout design as well. Its like half of it is classic petsite and the other half is trying to do that bubbled rounded mobile app feel.

And as is tradition, many topics are getting locked as well.



To be fair on this, this roll out is so badly planned and done terribly; As is tradition with this site.

Even though the devs said clearly there won't be a means to have the legacy layout, someone has to do it for them.


Will test the mobile layout later though, that was one of the reasons I left left.
Though... the drama, pay to win, shit staff, constant FOMO crap was part of it too...
