The escort thing predated the show. She just brought it up to Shinji during a pep talk in B1 saying he could do it as a job and she would teach him the signature move to attract clients. Also from what I remember, she didn't want the escort for sex, she just wanted someone to tag along for some sort of anime convention in NYC since she was going solo.

One has to account for the fact that Jimmy is literally mentally retarded, he did see a listing for the same ashtray that was $800 but "on markdown" to $40 as part of the boomer thrift store scams that are run. Jimmy is so mentally out of it that he literally thought the thing was marked down that much. Jimmy's problem is that he is highly vulnerable to suggestion and he is picking up horderman's hording habits as if it was an infectious disease, which sometimes mental illness really can be.
Yea I doubt it had any value of its own but you have to admit if it had survived until the end and been at the bar the whole run of the show it would've been fairly big-ticket. Every single clip at the bar would've had that ashtray in it. Even if he hadn't brought it and given it a whole spiel and it was just an ashtray that came with the set it would've had some significance.
