My autistic problem is that I always want things to be like books or stories, Sylvia tells Letty to "listen to TTS" and opens the floodgates to all the pending hate about her weight and appearance, goes upstairs and confronts the TTS and then... like... confronts her sense of self and has a boss battle, then comes downstairs a better, less fragile, more self-assured person. I think she managed that by like... 15 degrees at best.
Trolls don't care about being creative, they just find the working strategy and spam it. Sylvia isn't going to start purging or bragging about spending the 30k on plastic surgery if trolls say her makeup and hat make her look like a mime. And nobody is listening to her music, even to make fun of it.

Even Letty knows, you don't have to try with Sylvia.

IMO, only Letty and Josie experienced "complete" character development during Fishtank. Letty came and started dependent and troubled by the bullying, confronted those problems and weaponized them to her advantage. Josie learned to participate (sometimes) and was forced to come out of her shell in certain ways (probably not the ways she wanted to, but ways she needed to). Vance experienced character regression at times, especially during Dark Vance and the Security characters, where "development" would have been him properly engaging with the other fish as himself, and "regression" is sinking further into characters and wearing sunglasses to hide his eyes (Jet pointed this out to Letty too) whenever he has to act out. That's why the photo Jet took of Vance swinging the bat at Letty through the wall with the sunglasses off was sort of weighty - with Letty not around to see him and make him ashamed, Vance accidentally stopped pretending to be a dick and became a dick.
Of course I'm just autistic and this is a reality show so symbolism doesn't mean anything. But it sorta does.


OK now here's my thing to post:
I'm posting this cuz we've returned to it in sneedchat a few times and I feel like in order to decide whether Vance is a) an irredeemable sociopath whose entire strategy hinged on maintaining his popularity or b) a soft soyboy who couldn't pull the trigger when Sam was begging him to do it on hand and knee, i wanna have a book club over this moment

first, some arguments in his favor:
vance had a habit of descending on people when they were crying or having a mental breakdown (mbd), like a possessed cat in a retirement home
vance did this with sylvia, damiel, chris, and josie (albeit for like five seconds but josie came in when he was sleeping)
on this basis we could argue that he is really trying to help these people because he wants to be uplifting as he says in the clip

on the flipside:
you could also argue that he just does this because it makes him look good
he never pushed her to the point of crying but he pressed her pretty hard towards the door when she smoked weed, during mauro's fake exit, and when she started packing when they were told the show was cancelled
he said she reminded him of his sister to "make a good moment for the show" and "to stay on letty's good side" even though he said later he was just lying and that he felt bad for assuming that saying dumb bullshit might have a strategic benefit for him

so: is he being sympathetic here, is he just saying dumb bullshit for the show, is letty using her magic to make him act as her sounding board, is he doing a character of himself in order to talk to her, what do you think

Vance wasn't trying to do anything positive for Letty there but he's incompetent at accomplishing his own goals and ends up letting her vent without realizing how that plays into her recovery. I think he was trying to nudge her towards inviting more heat so she'd break further.
Whether Letty saw through him or not, I don't know, she was using that interaction to think things through and build back up.

We were talking in chat about night of day 32/early morning of day 33 and why Sam was pissed, I have percolated and I have come to my answer.



Frank basically broke land speed records to get to the house before Mauro quit. But I think him being present was the straw that broke the camel's back - they had an actress playing a whore, Chris, Brandon Buckingham, Alex Stein, Dontarius AND Frank in the house. Josie Letty and Vance hadn't said an audible word in over an hour. Honestly I don't think Sam was mad at Frank for what he was doing to Letty or anything, he was just mad that the house was crammed with "celebrity guests" who were loudly upstaging each other, all in the same room, while Vance and Josie were just unbothered in the kitchen like a pair of coathangers.
Hence why the "grossest thing" challenge was postponed, and Vance ended up shaved and Sam made Josie go beg while people were partying.

I maintain that Letty lost the extra 10k during the debate challenge. Sam practically handed it to her on a plate but she kept talking about her mein Kampf, I earned it, Josie didn't earn it. All she had to say was "Josie will make this money up when she starts streaming " like Sam said when he was explaining why she didn't get the point, and we would've gotten a completely different ending.

On 5/14 Letty writes the earliest draft of her NEET speech on a piece of paper in the drawing notebook, rips it out, leaves it on the table. Lance discovers it and tries to read it but it's barely legible because, Vance says, her handwriting looks like she is writing with her bad hand. They manage to get the gist, then put it down on the table.

Letty comes back to the paper after fighting with Sylvia (why did you wipe your ass with my clothes, pig pig pig!), rips a corner off, writes on it - at least a sentence, and stuffs the corner into her pocket.

Letty fetches dice from her room and she sits down with Lance to play a dice-based drinking game. Sylvia strongarms Chris into talking about his mom, "My mom ended up dying and I lost my home-" at this Lance turns sharply towards Letty and they clearly share a glance. Lance silently does a cheers gesture towards Letty and drinks. Letty picks up the paper and orients it towards Lance, then slaps the pen meaningfully down on it.

He flips the paper to the blank side, and writes a few words. She writes two lines. He writes much more this time and smirks at Letty. She writes while Lance talks to Chris about Drawn Together. Vance sits down on the sofa, Lance is about to write his next note but Sylvia comes over and he stops abruptly, then rips everything they've written off the page and pockets it. He writes his next note close to Letty so she can read it, she laughs and he immediately rips it from the page and pockets it too.

Letty pulls out the piece from her pocket, from earlier, writes on it, and puts it away again.

There are various distractions and Lance and Letty stop messing with the paper for some time. When Sylvia starts getting obnoxious Lance sits by the paper again in a camping chair and picks it up, and occasionally looks at Letty while playing with the pen, but I guess she seemed too asleep to write anything because he puts it down again.

Everyone goes to bed, Lance wakes up at Australian O'Clock, draws what I assume as Lance told Aristedes is the *just* the Fall Guy on the paper, folds it up, and leaves the tank with it.

I guess if it's not "uraqt" or "eat me out like a dingo eating a baby" or whatever it was probably just more digs on Sylvia, based on the timing of when they started, and how they seemed to respond to Sylvia almost seeing the notes, and how Lance seemed to want to write more for Letty when Sylvia was being annoying.
