First Omicron case reported in the US
By Adam Renton, Brad Lendon, Sheena McKenzie and Ed Upright, CNN
Updated 2:00 p.m. ET, December 1, 2021

What we're covering here

  • The US has reported its first case of the Omicron coronavirus variant in California, the White House confirmed.
  • The US joins a growing number of countries that have confirmed cases of the new variant, including Saudi Arabia and Nigeria.
  • There is still a lot we don't know about Omicron, but Israel's health minister said there are "indications" people who received a vaccine booster are "protected" against Omicron.
  • CNN will host a global town hall and discuss the new Omicron coronavirus variant with Dr. Anthony Fauci tonight. Watch live at 9 p.m. ET.

Fauci: First reported case of Omicron variant involves traveler from South Africa

Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden's chief medical adviser, said that the patient diagnosed with the first reported case of the Omicron coronavirus variant in the US traveled from South Africa to San Francisco, California, and is experiencing "mild symptoms."
"The individual was a traveler who returned from South Africa on November 22 and tested positive on November 29. The individual is self-quarantining and all close contacts have been contacted and all close contacts, thus far, have tested negative. The individual was fully vaccinated and experienced mild symptoms, which are improving at this point. So this is the first confirmed case of Covid-19 caused by the Omicron variant detected in the United States," Fauci said.

NOW: Fauci speaks to reporters after US identifies first case of Omicron variant

From CNN’s Kaitlan Collins and Jacqueline Howard

Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden's chief medical adviser, is speaking to reporters now from the White House briefing room.
The United States' first confirmed case of the Omicron coronavirus variant has been identified in California, according to a source familiar.
The World Health Organization designates Omicron a "variant of concern." In a technical brief released this week, the WHO noted that the variant poses a "very high" global risk. The variant was first identified by scientists in South Africa, and has since been detected in several countries.

I feel like we'll probably have a variant that actually does something besides give you a slightly more intense runny nose and nobody will take it seriously

Media and Government propaganda: "Scary bad disease! U die now! Shut it down, take experimental drug, wrap self in plastic, end of the world!"

Also Media and Government: "LOL traveler from origin country freely brought disease over, whoops, no big deal tho... yes all flights and travel will remain unrestricted"

Someone claimed everyone at the con was vaxxed.......but were they really ?

Cons in general are breeding grounds for colds and flus. Have these people ever heard of con crud? I got a case con of crud once at a con a few years ago, had a cold and a slight fever but was back on my feet after 2-3 days.

Young healthy people need to stop being so fucking thin skinned over mild viruses their bodies can easily fight off.

I'm amazed at how the media pivoted to this right after they had no more lead stories. The rittenhouse, arbery, and Wisconsin parade attack were finished in the news cycle. The next morning it's just OMICRON on every headline. We have limited data on how dangerous it actually is. Panicking is not productive and the media is pushing this hard for a new lead story.

The issue here is that if the virus is more transmissible, often they will become less lethal (but not always). The majority of people do not understand this concept. A virus does not want to kill the host, it wants them to live, spread it, and remain asymptomatic/oligosymptomatic for as long as possible. The mutations may lead to further reduced efficacy, but likely not to a significant degree.

So they are now saying to have holiday gatherings outside.

"We know that masks, being outdoors, and social distancing are protective from all COVID variants. That means that we need to remember to always wear masks when around others indoors. If possible, avoid crowded indoor spaces and if you do need to go, consider wearing two masks or wearing an N95. If you get together indoors with others, limit your socializing to only vaccinated people and only get together with one or two other households. If you are going to see someone elderly or someone with chronic health conditions and can't do your visiting outside, take a rapid test before you go and reschedule if you have any symptoms of illness. Don't assume that staying six feet from others indoors or wearing a cloth mask alone will be enough to protect you against Omicron."

So, wear two masks, even indoors. Don't forget to exclude The Unclean from your holiday gatherings. Take a rapid test before every party. You can just reschedule Christmas if you are positive. No biggie.

As we slip further and further into a dystopian nightmare I wonder what I did to deserve this timeline.

B-b-but it can't spread that quickly oh noes

A mutation of Omicron has already been detected so now Omicron "standard is BA1 and the "mutated version" of Omicron is now designated BA2.

However as noted, it is still too early on in the lab analysis to tell yet whether the world should give a shit or not.

I'd say we likely do not need to give a shit.
