Beirut, Lebanon (CNN)

A large explosion rocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday, damaging buildings and offices around the city.
The source of the explosion was a major fire at a warehouse for firecrackers near the port in Beirut, the state-run National News Agency reported.
A red cloud hung over the city in the wake of the blast as firefighting teams rushed to the scene to try to put out the fire.
Local news reported multiple people were wounded in the incident.
This is a breaking story, more to follow.

Attaching all of the videos I grabbed from this guys twitter just now as well, here's one of them:

Here are some links to other posts in the thread with more content, you may need to go to the posts directly to see the media:

Couple more angles of the explosions, seems everyone in Beirut holds their phone vertically. Buckle up for a very delayed boom in the second video.

Here's a different angle. Notice how the guys recording it say "Allahu Akbar".

EDIT: Direct embed

Found this slowmo of the explosion in which you can see the fireball and airblast more clearly

(edits: trying to get the spacing of text/video right; links to tweets)
I think this is just a slowed down version of this that I grabbed from twitter (https://twitter.com/saadmohseni/status/1290678176574779395):

Also this for another, closer angle (https://twitter.com/realdavereilly/status/1290690743217119235):

And you retards thought putting it all in one place is a good idea? :story:

It was explosive sodium nitrate holy shit

What remains of the dock:

There’s a radiation spike picked up near Italy/scicily. Let me try to archive this or take a screenshot

I know that there are several vids on here but here's a 2+ minute concatenation of multiple angles and some security camera footage of blast sites.

Translation: Preliminary security information talks about 2,700 tons of confiscated ammonia in the port exploded during the process of welding a small hole to prevent theft

Literally just a return to the French running Lebanon as a colony.

I mean, the French can't do much worse than the government they have now. Hell, people in the streets of Beirut were pretty much begging Macron to do that earlier today.

Speaking of which, and not to digress too much, we have had a terrorist hostage taking today in France in Le Havre, where some Muslim took a bank hostage, and threatened to kill everyone unless Palestine gets freed right here and now. (On top of being known by police as a radicalised Islamist, he's a schizophrenic too). The situation's still ongoing as of writing this post with one hostage remaining, one having escaped, and the others freed.

Other than that, we have had devastating forest fires in the South near Marseille this week, with 2.7k people displaced, and a town completely burnt down.

And yet Macron fucks off to Lebanon instead.

France still has forests?

What the hell does he have against Jordan? He must be a fucking bigot to hate Muslims enough to have a Muslim country give up half it's land.

Lol what makes you think that Macron cares about the French people, of course he'd jump onto a plane to take care of foreigners.

Under the water is actually the LAST place you would want to be for an explosion of this magnitude, at that distance. With getting to dorky, sound waves actually travel faster and clearer in liquids and solids as they are denser mediums than air. Its the same reason why you could clearly hear your foot stamping the bottom of the pool so clearly as a kid.

Best case scenario is this guy came out with some of his hearing in tact.
No wonder my fish hate me so much...

I found it interesting that the Orient Queen tipped in the direction of the blast, with no (visible) damage, and still sunk. Only two people died there and the rest are just injured.

Also notice the small vessel on the shore, that looks like a ruptured banana.

It certainly looks like that silo acted like a giant blast shield, along with all the grain.

Saw someone mention the OKC bombing, which also used ammonia nitrate just much much smaller than the amount from the Beirut explosion, this is a shot of the building in the aftermath for some comparison between how fucking massive the Lebanon explosion was.

The closest approximation for the Lebanon explosion was the Halifax explosion. Which left 1 in 50 Halifaxers blind and was the impetus for the creation of the Canadian Blind People Society or whatever it's called.

Saw this and thought it was very insightful.

This is a fine(?) attitude to have in Lebanon(maybe) but I'm pretty sure this is his attitude in governing the french people in France as well.

they need something for the airliners to hit when they miss the runway.

oh that reminds me. Hey BritBongistani Kiwi’s. This might be a good time to ask your government about the fully loaded WW2 Munitions ship that’s sunk in the Thames in the middle of London, and that successive governments have been ignoring in the hope that it doesn’t go off on their watch for 75 years. Because that fucker will make Beirut look like a a Disney firework show when it finally cooks off.

A truck full of ammonium nitrate is one thing. 2,700 tons is another. I guess terrorists could buy a building, obtain as much ammonium nitrate and other explosives as they can, sneak it inside over a period of months, and detonate. It might be easier than stealing a nuke from Pakistan.
In the USA it's harder to get large amounts of ammonium nitrate than it used to be due to the Oklahoma City bombing.

You literally need a blasting license to buy it. It's even been banned as a fertilizer in the tribal regions of Pakistan. There are no AN fertilizer plants left in the US. The only ones left make AN blasting agents, Like the Nitropril stored in the Beirut warehouse. This stuff was made in Georgia (the country not the state) and may not have been the sensitized version since it says 'high density.' The air pockets that allow AN to be sensitized make it about 25% less dense.

If I wasn't already, this thread put me on a list.

And here I was, hoping Beirut would make a comeback, for my bucket list.

I knew a lot of Lebanese who remembered what it was like before everything went to shit; I even dated a Chaldean-Lebanese girl for a while, before she left for college back home.... And was one of the few ex'es I parted on good terms with. I definitely miss the food... and y'all know about the Catholic-girl stereotype? It goes triple for orthodox/chaldean girls.... holy fuck.

Huge ass explosion? Better run outside and to the windows. On a side note, can anyone explain to me why the person inside gets blown the hell back but the people outside don't move like they got the best non-slip shoes ever created?

Nobody thinks it's going to happen, until it does.

And there's more obstructions at ground level, down streets & around corners, vs standing in front of a window in an elevated position.

I would also guess that being hit by a bunch of flying debris might not have helped, and also, as a fluid enters a smaller space, it speeds up, thus increasing the wind speed in this case.
