Liverpool Echo Arena car park fire destroys 1,400 vehicles
A huge fire has destroyed up to 1,400 vehicles in a multi-storey car park in Liverpool.

Nearby apartments have been evacuated due to smoke billowing from the blaze, police said.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service described the blaze at King's Dock next to the Liverpool Echo Arena as one of the worse fires it had ever dealt with.

No-one is believed to have been seriously injured in the fire, which broke out at about 16:40 GMT

The fire service said 12 engines were at the scene tackling the blaze.

All vehicles left in the 1,600-capacity car park have been destroyed, Merseyside Police said.

They warned people to stay away from the area, adding that travel restrictions were in place.

Mike Quek tweeted that there were "lots of explosions coming from the car park still".

"Driving into #liverpool #arena carpark and told to evacuate as car was on fire. Horses on ground floor. Hopefully everyone is ok," he added.

Merseyside Police said: "Initial investigations indicate that an accidental fire within a vehicle caused other cars to ignite.

"We believe that all vehicles parked in the car park have been destroyed."

I can see this both as an accident or arson. I mean a lot of cars might leak a small bit of oil or gasoline that ends up soaking into the cement that the structure is built from, and if one car catches on fire accidentally (it happens, my work had a guy’s car go up in flames due to a leaky fuel line that dripped on the still hot engine as it sat in the parking lot) then it could heat the surrounding area to the flashpoint and set everything else on fire.

Or somebody splashed a bunch of gasoline and set it off as a New Years bonfire.

Really I’m not leaning either way until there’s more info.

Pictures taken as the fire was beginning show that the culprit vehicle was a Range Rover.

Whenever I am in a multilevel parking garage, they always have a really extensive sprinkler system to prevent fires just like this. Wonder what went wrong here.

We had a visitor's car catch fire at work once for no reason, and she was a safety rep.
They pack cars in as much as possible to make the most use of the space, so I can easily see how this would get out of hand pretty quickly.

This is great news!

1400 scousers can guarantee that their car will be where they parked it for once.

Yeah, this is very strange.
Electrical fires are not uncommon when it comes to cars, especially if you have 1,400 of them in one place.
Having a what is basically a fuel depot without proper safety-systems in place seems negligent.
