It's not really about humility, it's about greed. You can't talk about humility and player respect inside of a game with a premium currency at $99+ cash shop mounts on top of game where gold can be exceedingly powerful (and can be purchased with real dollars).
Im sure I wasnt alone in waiting for the clenched fist behind the back of "our player housing will be *way* better than that stinky old final fantasy!" WoW and its cheerleaders were trumpeting... And Blizzard did *not* disappoint.

That fist was tattooed with dollar signs and had a roll of nickels in it so it hit so very hard. And just like that, the "housing debate" silently went away.

Enjoy paying for your houses, blizzard peoples... The houses no one is going to show up to see anyway, since they'll be busy decorating their own...

So how many here will actually buy 8.0? I know I won't, since they have indicated no major plans for improvements.
Not unless the "big announcement" they hinted at for Fanfest convinces me they have realized what the problem with the game's trajectory since Shadowbringers has been, and that they are going to stop phoning things in.

That really is the problem with asian developers and success.

They seem to assume that reaching the top of the mountain means they win. Nintendo and Sony keep trading crowns because they keep getting abhorrently lazy and letting the anti-consumer demon take the wheel.

Squeenix has spent more time being clinically insane since the merger than being rational, and every time Jekyl manages to claw a win out, Hyde breathes a sigh of relief and commences fucking it all up.

If the whole "rebirth" thing yoshi p said means they are gonna overhaul the game(doubt it) and it actually improves, ill kneel. Although at this point what can they do to improve the game?
1) Fix class homogenization
2) Flesh out itemization
3) Have more endgame content than just savage. Criteria is almost there but it's dead content if you don't do it on release and the rewards still suck. I'd also like more open world stuff to do.
4) Y'shtola must be in a bikini at least 80% of the time she's on screen

I don't think I've ever seen an MMO flourish by catering to hardmode endgame content. I think most MMO devs have internal stats showing the vast majority don't interact with that shit at all. You need time sinks though. savage is a way to get the "hardcore" crowd to spend all their time on the game.
Honestly I think they need to go back to having relic weapons and armor that actually take a bit of an effort to collect rather than just hoarding tomes. Preferably with a story that's actually engaging and not a taco eating contest.

They need a new combat design and they need a way to scale it to keep it relevant.

The "every class operates the same way and has a single 2 minute cooldown to play around" is done to death and has severely limited the boss encounters and the design of having classes scale down to do content (of which everyone does as a core part of the game) was a great idea but is showing it's age with how broken it is on 5 expansions worth of content and generally just feels really bad to play.

If they keep it in FFXIV - they need to commit to class designs. All classes should have the "frame" of their kit by level 20 (a full combo, an aoe combo, and a few relevant spells for roles) and should have all of their tools by level 50 - I hate spending most of 45-99 on a class that never feels "good" when it's all pointless anyhow (not like having core skills unlock earlier is going to mess up Twintania min ilvl raids in 2026). Levels could use a severe evaluation - they're basically worthless bloat and it feels like 75% of all skills are there because "SCH needed something to do at level 92, MCH needed something to do at 84, etc" and not because they're valued skills.

They need to improve the UX/UI drastically. Everything in FFXIV is a chore, from the second you sign up on the website for a license, to how Glamor is handled, to not being able to get a fucking haircut while in duty finder, to the horrible cutscene animation quirks (like not being able to have more than one person moving at a time, so you get that awkward shuffle in every cutscene of characters leaving one at a time, and so on. It's a massive list that really needs to be actually addressed - basically every other game has a massively better UX (even WoW from 2006 does).

Modernizing FFXIV (which because it's Japanese launched in a deeply unmodernized state, despite the team playing other games like WoW) needs to be central in anything they do moving forward. No idea if they actually have the balls to do it.

Wildstar always comes to mind, a MMO catered from the ground up for hardcore raiders, by hardcore raiders.

dead on arrival, basically.

And I agree, while Relic grinds were never difficult, nor especially fulfilling content it has always been asinine that they have given up on relics being boring currency grinds, rather than a system that is perfectly built for fleshed out casual content. Even ARR relics somewhat did a good job with what they could do to force others into doing content that is otherwise dead by tying older content to relic progression to at least encourage a variety of content being done.

But yeah, I do not think this overhaul will be nearly as big as everyone expects it to be, or big enough that the game actually needs. It would need to be FF14 to ARR level of overhaul, and they just won't do that to a game that even if it's not at it's peak is still steady revenue.

Wildstar's problem was that the game was not fun from minute one. Most people I knew logged out of the tutorial spaceship or after a few minutes in the first desert zone. Moving your character around felt bad with the sliding and animations and camera movement and move speed. Mobs have AoEs you need to move out of to simulate action, but again movement feels bad so it doesn't feel good. And then you press a button and hit like a wet noodle only hurting a mob for 15% of its HP bar. It is overall just not entertaining. Whereas you could just play a real action game where it feels good to move your character around, you get cool camera angles or slow mo dodges, you press a button and explode an enemy into itty bitty bits and it feels great, etc. Also, you are clicking on cheap 2D UIs that felt bad even for its time, etc.

WoW's combat and character controls/movement feels better due to the immediate responsiveness, no animation delay, etc. As meh as FF14's gameplay is, at least controlling your character doesn't feel as bad, and there isn't as much AoEing making you run around as much just to fight normal mobs. FF14 also has other things going for it presentation wise such as the story cutscenes or the memorable music, while Wildstar had none of that. Maybe if the original director hadn't been usurped by the art director, it would have turned out better.

It's mindboggling how bad the cutscene quality is. For a mainline Final Fantasy game. In 2025. PS2 games had better cutscenes than this.
This and the lack of VA work pisses me off probably more than it should. It feels real bad paying a sub for a mmo where minimum effort is put in. Im reminded of a game like SWTOR where yes the cutscene graphics and va work wasnt the best, but there ALWAYS was va work in 99% of the content and always something interesting going on. FFXIV often is completely lacking in va work for large chunks of the MSQ, let alone side content which seemingly has limited va work to begin with.

If SE doesnt care about the story and content to put effort in, why should I, the consumer, care?

That has probably not been the case since before Covid.
I think I dropped out at the right time after having become Emperor of the galaxy

Irony about swtor is that I like crafting in it more than I do XIV. you get the things, you have the skill, you craft it. takes time, but otherwise no muss no fuss about fucking crafting rotations, potions and medicine and all that shit.

They let you become Emperor, then take it away in the next DLC, then it goes back to cock-slapping between Republic and Sith Empire.

They really should've ended it with you becoming Emperor of Zakuul. Then have it so that eventually, the Sith Empire and the Republic coalesced and became one. Then you can have a rebel Sith sect created by Darth Ruin attack both of them 1700 years later, and that leads to the New Sith Wars, where you create a new character and they have new class stories.

It's time to play "Bait or Crazy (FF14 Reddit Edition)":

With the combination of Redditor + FFXIV Troon being a perfect storm of insanity, this could be a genuine post. But it's just so retarded that part of me wants to believe this is bait.

Anyone with a functioning brain knew that the other shoe was going to drop with housing in WoW. It wasn't a matter of 'if', but 'how.'
