The funny thing is that the new EX also has this, everyone gets swallowed in and fights an add that is different for his or her role.

New YoshiP interview just dropped

Trying to decipher YoshiP PR speak is practically an Olympic sport, especially when he contradicts himself in the same breath, but the most charitable interpretation I can come up with is that 8.0 isn't really going to be the "job overhaul" expac, but all future jobs will follow whatever new design parameters they come up with while your old favorites remain dead in the water.

I like that the author's name is one letter off from being "Allslop." Which is unfair cos it feels like PC Gamer is one of the few outlets that puts out decent stuff still (while mired in a bog of shit, mind.)

And this isn't really that hard to decipher if you read the article.

The first quote is relating to the latest dungeon and how there are unique role moments for the players, as well as in the MSQ, and how he's wanting to do more of that. Here's the preceding paragraph:

"Within the MSQ, we can't always provide a unique expression for the jobs in every patch," Yoshida says. But "when it comes to using the jobs in battle content and bringing out more of that uniqueness of each job, we are working on a big update." Before Dawntrail even launched, Yoshi-P had teased that he wanted to counteract 'class homogenization' in an overhaul that was planned for 8.0.

As for what that will look like, he explains that "People might think of it as an expansion of the system that we have in the game. So the players who already like the way things are can feel at ease that nothing is going to change for their experience. But we are trying to do something new on top of what we already have."

I'm starting to worry that the functionality of all the jobs are going to remain the same but we're going to be getting cosmetic changes rather than substantial ones.

And again, it seems like the quotes are relating to 'spotlight is on you' type moments that are more fluff (cutscenes, MSQ, etc.) vs crunch (ie, gameplay, systems, etc.) Here's the full 'graf again:

Yoshida says he's unable to share more on this at this point in time, and I doubt we'll get much news on the matter until at least Fanfest 2026, but he reemphasizes: "In terms of the individuality of each job and also showcasing the player character to the fullest in terms of how they are the hero of the game, we want to continue placing importance on both of these aspects moving forward." If you were among those frustrated by our more back-bench role in Dawntrail's MSQ, that'll likely come as welcome news.

The whole 8.0-fixes-jobs thing was always a willing overdose of copium.

To fix jobs, you need someone competent in job design. Where are they gonna get one of those?

No, what they'll do to change things up is introduce THREE new jobs that next expac. Sure, they'll play exactly the same as everything else, but the particle effects will be different - because the art team has some competent people, so just shove more work off onto them.

I do find it amusing that people in the broader "community" are beginning to get irked by the way the great Yoship talks, when he always talks like this.

A lot of the 'focus/spotlight on you' stuff is almost certainly a direct result of Dawntrail's Focus on Wuk Lamat as the 'main character' instead of you which is something I'm sure he's going to have to address a whole bunch of times.

I'm hoping that 8.0 fixes some things about jobs, namely how awful they are to play pre-max level in most instances and how often they're teaching incorrect concepts and feel awkward and incomplete. I don't expect them to many any kind of actual meaningful changes to the 2 minute meta, but a man can dream.

I did the dungeon once, as SGE. If anyone has done it more than once, does the doom always hit the healer? Does the 'interrupt or die' always come from the tank boss? Even as a healer I do not remember needing to look at anyone else.
I said out loud 'oh this is just Dead Ends' when fighting the last boss, both in voiceover, general theme, and even assets. I skipped all the cutscenes because I got baited into happiness when we exited one of them and retard cat was laying on the ground not breathing.
Yeah it is always exactly the same.

Well, here we are after 1 week of doing this. The grind is fairly tame, the only thing that is killing my OCD is that the alliance raid one will lag one or two days behind the others it seems.

I think we're going to see 0-1 new jobs next expansion (and the mongs are going to tard out over it.) Yoshi P was talking about the number of jobs in the game during DT pre-release and I took it as him setting the table for less jobs down the road.

But yeah, shit like different particle effects or more 'job fantasy' (or whatever) type things rather than breaking the 2 minute meta or whatever.

My hope for 8.0 is that they make healers more interesting and varied in what they do. Anything else for the other roles would be icing on the proverbial cake.

Looks like RNG is fucking you a bit with alliance roulette. If you get tower for the nier raids, you get like 833 points of aether.

I managrd to max out both alliance and raid roulette wells. Working on trials which will take me a bit if I get unlucky and get ARR trials which give less than 100 aether.

In other, irrelevant news, I ended up partying with Xeems during one of my raid queues. We got furry gundam. Didn't even notice he was there until someone pointed him out.

He just replied with a ": P" before we proceeded to speedkill the fuck outta the boss. Then he said "ggs!" and vanished. Baldy is pretty cool outside of stream sometimes. Like a regular dude.

With the power of binging issues and some time off work that I was supposed to spend at least somewhat productively I finally maxed out my wells. I focused on maxing out alliance raids first because I thought those would be the biggest pain, but it turns out trials and raids were the real hell all along. ARR trials practically give fuckall for completion and even DT raids only give around 200. So protip: don't binge this.
And just as a final fuck you from the game, after going back to Gerolt and Co. and wanting to get the new DRK bonker they wanted the old one along with 3 stones. I couldn't give them the old one because I had that equipped and that was the only sword I had on me and if I switched to an other class the quest refused to prog because I had to be a DRK to continue, so I had to run back to town to get a vendor sword for 2 minutes. I am pretty sure all prior relic quests are like this but this is my first time doing this normally and this is fucking retarded.

The way XIV is handling gear upgrades/trades is almost as bad as their payment and account settings page for XI. Almost.

It has in fact been this way for 12 years.

I think the only "we're aware this sucks" remedy they've ever done is have a nearby vendor sell the Level 1 weapons for all classes - which still took ~6 or so years to do.

The US. Oh wait, no. You must speak the Japanese to work for our very prestigious company, gaijin.

Square should be a case study in how companies just become ossified bureaucratic nightmares.
To be fair, that policy filtered a lot of people who would drive the game into the dirt, and I would argue for good measure; a single person finally bypassed it and is now shitting it up on purpose to own the imaginary people she shadowboxes. Dropping the "JP onry" would open a dam of raw sewage.

I've probably mentioned it in this thread, but Square briefly venturing out of JP ONRY basically sunk the company the first and last time they attempted it (Squaresoft Hawaii, which was home to the movie Spirits Within...which basically necessitated the merger with Enix.)

I was rewatching the Heavensward cinematic and caught that Koji Fox wasn't just a localization guy, but also co-lead on lore and was credited as such in the cinematic.

A little worrisome if Kate is 100% Koji's replacement in terms of role/responsibilities.

Also, am I missing something with the latest spate of drama with her? Not really getting the outrage.

Celebrated Charlie Kirk's assassination. For one of the few rare times, Square Enix hasn't signaled that they would be firing her like many companies are doing with people who are celebrating his murder.

No wonder 7.0 and 7.1 was nothing but TACO TACO TACO TACO DIVERSITY IS GREAT (even though somehow it's only united by a singular strongman) TACO TACO TACO ALL CIVILIZATIONS ARE EQUAL (even though that civilization is doing things that are objectively evil with souls). I wonder if Koji (metaphorically) slap the fucking pen outta her hand and told to get the fuck out and did 7.2 and 7.3. The shift in tone really felt like it.

It's very unlikely she's a full replacement - but probably got a boost in responsibilities when Koji was working on FFXVI.

It's unclear and will likely be made clear next year if CBU3 is going to keep splitting their team for multiple projects while Yoshi-P actively complains about his staffing levels - it will probably have to do with how FFT Remastered is received. I don't think that CBU3 is going to be trusted with FFXIV and another Mainline FF game though.

I mean, that then begs the quesion: who else? I know Squeenix has a full time team on FF7R, and another on a Dragon Quest(?) thing and various assorted remakes they seem to be churning out. Do they have anymore studios?

From a business perspective, it makes sense for them to just let it blow over. Companies that let the 16-22 era cancel-culture blow over reaped similar... not 'rewards' so much as 'nothing actually happening.'

A lot of the companies dropping people are dropping the equivalent of village idiots, in an economy where labor grossly outnumbers jobs (again). It's easy for them to replace unskilled workers, and it's generally a net-boon for them to be seen as taking an easy moral win in exchange for a few NEETs raging online about them firing personified refuse.

But the number of people who play FF14, crossed with the number who know who Kate is, crossed with the number who know she posts on Bluesky, crossed with the number who care about the assassination... is relatively slim, to the point where the company would draw more attention if it did something than if it just let it roll over. Not to mention - they'd have to find a replacement for a lead: it's not as easy to just slot a new one in.

That said, I wouldn't say this has necessarily gone unnoticed. Kate was a lead on the worst-performing expansion that hemorrhaged subscribers. Her input almost certainly brought on the US VA studio, which is directly responsible for one of the biggest complaints of the expansion (WL's awful performance). Each QA issue with silly, obvious translation mistakes and typos falls directly on her head. Even from a purely corporate perspective, this is someone I would have an eye towards shuffling into a useless position and replacing.
