A friend of mine was absolutely seething when they learned that the first two DT trial mounts are finally redeemable for totems, just as soon as they showed off even "cooler" wings for the newest trial. It's their own fault though. They did over 200 runs of Vali trying to get the wings there and went full sunk cost fallacy when I pointed out how retarded it is to do do more than the requisite 99 clears for the totems. They were literally fuming at the suggestion of just moving on to another trial while they waited for the the mount to be redeemable.

I haven't even continued the MSQ after unlocking the 7.1 dungeon and it looks like the Beatrix Trial is probably part of MSQ like EW instead of a separate quest so I won't even be able to immediately play the EX *sigh*

Azem Crystal Ex Machina, too.
That's probably just gonna be the go-to for any "off-world" shenanigans we get into. Easier than trying to explain how you dragged 7 randos with you for an interdimensional fight to the death each time.

Vocals absolutely suck balls but damn the synths are actually really good. Like it's actually a crazy composition, that's insanely good.

Like on a second listen if I just ignore the vocals (which you can't do at every point, gotta rhyme something with shit yo on the wall yo shit on the wall yo) the choruses really work

Something I’ve noticed with FFXIV music lately is that the lyrics are shit but the instrumentals tend to be good. Except smile. That song just fucking sucks in all departments.
Won't be surprised if Koji-Fox stepped down from songwriting as well as he was responsible for Endwalker theme's lyrics, among other songs.

Koji was credited as one of the writers for Smile’s lyrics so I’m not sure about that. Also maintenance is over early so let’s see how this shit goes down.

About 10 minutes into the 7.2 MSQ. We are so fucking back bros

So I started on the Cornservant quest and some of the things that had been mentioned in this thread about lore building and stuff is addressed.

Apparently the Cornservant magically shifted the peoples of Tural away from Aztec-esque inspired heart sacrifices because corn is just so gosh darned tasty:

No explanation on which 'people' did this (was it the giants? The Pelus? The parrot birdmen? The Vieras?), a retread of a harvest/fertility ritual (which was explored with 'the crops are failing/let's throw a party' bit in the MSQ), and shitting on actual traditions as a result (the main purpose of Aztec heart sacrifices were to appease the sun god and it was a central tenet of Meso-American cultures/cosmology) is the sort of 'problematic' behavior that progressive types find themselves stepping in whenever they try to do shit like this because it reduces a storied history/culture to a caricature.

On the one hand, I appreciate they're doing a modicum of worldbuilding, on the other hand, it is so fucking lazy.

E: And of course the food reward is more fucking tacos, lmao.

Finished the patch msq
It was meh, not much happens. We meet the real Speeen and the kid behind the screen in the trailer. The dungeon and trial were disappointingly easy compared to the previous DT ones. Wuk was actually tolerable for once. That said it was much better than 7.0 and 7.1 and did set up some interesting stuff.

more slop as expected. every character continues to be unrelatable, unbelievable, and uninteresting. anime-tier dialogue fucking abounds. Calyx is an anime stereotype with awful, boilerplate dialogue. they spend a lot of cutscene time showing him doing a bunch of nonsense with his computer screen and laser pen, and summoning iPads and shit, despite the fact that he's a fully digital intelligence with no need for physicality. why does he need a computer screen to access a computer he's directly a part of? why would he take the trouble to tunnel into a conveniently placed monitor to show his face but darken it to hide himself? why bother showing your face at all given the fact that it's totally optional? how did they set off a gigantic lightning bolt in the middle of a populated area, which cut the power for a significant period of time, and nobody came to investigate or even acknowledged that it happened? every cutscene is full of half-assed dramatic license that they do nothing with. they made Sphene Copy #2 a bitch for no real reason, I guess to try and get her to chew scenery more effectively, before just giving up and throwing her away completely. the part where Wuk Lamat gets in her face and yells at her for disrespecting "Sphene's love for her people" had me physically recoiling away from my screen. does anybody really think shit like this goes hard? it's worse than a bad Netflix show. I remain convinced that the lead writer is whatever the Japanese equivalent of a Gold Redditor is.

this whole expansion's story is so frustratingly frictionless. it has the pretense of taking on grand, profound topics like death, loss, the struggle against mortality, and the cost of technological advance. but every single attempt to make a statement, or portray a complex topic, or add layers to a character by putting them through a difficult situation, just absolutely falls flat on its fucking face. do the Endless represent effective immortality, an illusory imitation of life, or something in between? doesn't matter, bunmom wants to die. talk to 3 NPCs who also tell you that despite ostensibly having their immortal souls rescued intact at the moment of their physical death, they actually think dying is pretty okay and they don't really mind that much. turn off the terminals, all the pretty lights go out and everything is gray now. wow, so sad! Speak with Wuk Lamat.

I keep waiting to see some spark, some little hint of something that makes me feel like I didn't waste my time watching this shit instead of just skipping all the dialogue and as many cutscenes as possible. this patch was not it. I guess it's good that more people are enjoying it, I don't want to shit on others for finding some happiness on this gay earth. but I can't help feeling that anybody who's actually into this dog shit is more than a little bit basic.

Koji was credited as one of the writers for Smile’s lyrics so I’m not sure about that. Also maintenance is over early so let’s see how this shit goes down.

Koji and, for that matter, Yoshida, is getting older and it's showing. this game is 12 years old this August - 15 if you count 1.0, which puts Yoshi's tenure as director/producer at around 14 years now. it's been a very long time since they were spunky underdogs fighting to create something new and interesting. the experimentation is gone, they've optimized their workflow and settled into a routine. their days as people who actually play and enjoy games are falling ever further behind them. they are very noticeably losing the plot.

Spent 8 million gil on melding award

Crafting a ton of Rarefied Stuffed Peppers without Artisan because Dalamud isn't up because it was a major patch so that I can get the Purple Scrip required for books, so that I can craft gear for myself and my dead FC.

Has anyone tried the Normal Raids yet?
