Those hori mini sticks are terrible.
Can you elaborate? I watched some videos about it and the mini 3 seemed like it was pretty okay-ish for what it was. I can get one second hand for less than USD $20. I’m just trying to find a cheap, temp option to see if I like using that kind of controller before possibly investing in an actual one. Don’t wanna drop $100+ on a nicer one and then realize that I actually hate using it, you know? Planning on using it mostly for guilty gear and maybe granblue.

Do you have any recommendations for other sticks that might work for what I’m looking for?

They are Small and light.
If you have bigger hands you'll probably feel cramped playing on it and it will shift around in your lap.
If you play with it on a tabletop you might fare a little better.
The lever/buttons are unique to it and not easy to replace (if you can at all ) if you don't like them.
At $20 it might be worth a stab and if nothing else you could maybe repurpose the PCB.
Mayflash makes a basic stick called the F300 for like $50-60.
It's bigger and more comfortable with more connectivity options.
It's also compatible with Japanese levers and buttons out of the box if you decide to upgrade it.

F300

I have pretty small hands and I plan on using it on top of my desk which is also kind of small. I’ve looked at the dimensions and one of the big appeals for me is that it should fit on my desk without me having to push everything else off it (I’m one of those people who prefer to have their tower + other tech + a full sized keyboard on their desk all at the same time lmao). Obviously if I end up investing in something better and better down the line then it probably won’t fit, but for now I’m just looking for something unobtrusive that I can easily pull out when I feel like it without having to make a big deal of it.

I’ll still look into the Mayflash though, the amount of positive reviews are making me hopeful. I also see they have a smaller version as well, the F101. Any idea how it might to compare to the F300 and the hori mini 3? Though the small price difference between the F101 and F300 does make the F300 look like the obviously better deal.

Thanks for the info and recommendation!

The F101 is in the same boat as the mini.
I forgot to ask but it Sounds like you're primarily a PC player.
Maybe also consider a used Xbox 360 stick.
Official ones are recognized as a XB360 controller across the board and game compatibility is very high.
Used X360 sticks can be found pretty cheap and tho not as easy as the mayflash to modify it can be done with a little effort.
I'll tell you straight up, there is a learning curve with a stick, you will probably initially hate it.
Also keep in mind moving to a stick WILL NOT make you any better at the game.
Only relentless practice and playing will do that.
I grew up in the post SF2 golden era of arcades so the stick is second nature to me, so it always makes me smile when I see someone interested enough to try them out.

Since we're talking controllers now; any good third party PS2 controllers? I still have my original but my PS2 is also 21 years old and the controller is busted even if it still works so I've been looking into getting a new one.

But original hardware is pricy af.

Original HW will also be 21 years old.
If I remember to I'll look at the one I have when I get home but honestly it's just not the same and if you're like me will be left disappointed and crying when you rub one out before bed.
Truth is I think the best solution is to get a wingman adapter from Brook and just use whatever your current favourite controller is.
I've also heard good things about the blueretro adapters too but I have zero experience with them.

EDIT

It's better than I had remembered but still something is off about it.
No branding on it at all save for a giant made in China sticker on the back.
Probably find them all over eBay and Amazon bit I still think a wingman adapter is a better option.

I definitely should’ve put that in my original comment, my bad! Yeah, PC and occasionally PS4. I’m also coming from a mostly PC rhythm game background (y’know, keypads, mechanical switches, drawing tablets, etc.) so I’m painfully well aware of how money ≠ skill lol I wonder if it would be possible to get a rhythm game like Thumper to be playable with stick?
Stick just looked like a fun way to play (don’t really have arcades in my area to try them out) and I figured that if I’m interested in using one the best time to start would be now while I’m still fairly new at fighting games and haven’t gotten too settled into a single play style yet.

Thanks for all your advice and recommendations!

If you're coming from a background of mostly flat controllers (like keyboards, or ones styled after instruments of some sort) take a look at the hit box type controller.
They are basically oversized keyboards with an arcade stick type layout.
Not my thing but they are becoming very popular.

I actually looked at those first before looking at sticks! But like how I was talking about getting “settled into one play style” for fighting games, I’m pretty set on my current styles for rhythm games. A lot of the ones I play also require only two to four keys (osu!mania is a super rare exception) so I feel like having a box like that would result in having like 80% of the buttons going unused. The only rhythm game I play that I think could get some use out of a box like that would be project diva mega mix, but I’ve already got a good keyboard set up for that which I don’t think is really much different from the box aside from the actual tactile feedback of buttons vs keys. The novelty of using a stick instead of just buttons is also part of the appeal for me. There are some seriously impressive hit box controllers out there though! Cool shit like this makes me wish I was confident enough to try setting up my own lol

League of Losers pedophiles Legends fighting game Project L (lol) also known as 2XKO has a spectating feature that allows you to see a "low quality" live feed of the match without needing to load the actual match. Don't care much about the game but this feature is very interesting. Also recommend me a fighting game to play other than Tekken, SF, and really most popular games since I've probably played them or won't.

Just picked up SVC Chaos. I've always really enjoyed this game, more than Capcom's crossover offerings. The FGC faggots shit on this game because they're ass sex loving faggots who are more concerned with "balance" than challenge or fun. Fuck those chodes.
My only minor complaint is I wish they had not used generic looking backgrounds.
My other minor gripe is they used the Neo Geo home version as the template, so you only get 4 continues. Hasn't been too much of an issue as I've already beaten the game, and got the good endings with Hugo and Guile. But I wouldn't have minded if they had used the arcade version with unlimited continues for more wiggle room for characters I'm not as good with.

I bought a hori mini stick when I was waiting on a new UFB replacement part.
It does the job and like you'd imagine, it's small, petite if you will. The clicky action takes some getting used to but once that's done it's smooth sailing. Surprisingly rugged for a piece of hardware of that size.
Overall I keep one for when I have visits and I switch into it.

Good game, fuck the FCG tranny lovers.
As for the 4 continues, Code Mystics have said they plan to patch that to infinite continues.

I've loved fighting games since I stumbled upon X-Men vs Street Fighter in the arcade as a kid. I put in the time to learn how to play Street Fighter and Tekken, and introduced a lot of my friends to them. I would always win due to experience so they eventually gravitated away from me and enjoyed playing with each other more, turning me into the basement king.

I played a ton of Tekken 7, I really loved that game even if the horrible online made me rage like crazy. I find Tekken 8 to be too similar, and the online infrastructure is so dated compared to SF6. Street Fighter 6 has stuck with me more, I didn't like any of the base roster, so I anxiously awaited Akuma's release. I enjoyed playing him for a few days but I learned how simple he was to excel with, which turned me off the game as a whole. I really appreciate SF6's presentation and quality of life additions, but the gameplay feels too samey to me. Mix that with this year's awful season pass and my hype is dead.

As far as sticks go, I recommend the Nacon Daija if you have a PC or PS5. Really nice build quality.

The Fighting Game Community has felt the new wave of trans gamers the worst I feel. The last couple EVO's were autist fests. I felt uncomfortable around all the socially awkward and smelly people. I miss the old days of thuggery, before Esports and Strive. I don't want to talk too long, but I have a lot to say about the direction of the genre. Is anyone looking forward to any upcoming fighting games? I would only be excited if they announced Persona 5 Arena or a 2d JoJo game personally.

Dark Legend for the Sega Saturn. Also known as "Outlaws Of The Lost Dynasty / Suiko Enbu" on the PS1. Based off of the "Water Margin" novel. You start off weilding weapons in the style of Samurai Showdown (slow attack movements, but heavy damage), but you can get rid of your weapon and fight with your bare hands in the style of Street Fighter (fast attack movements with combos, low damage output). It also has a bunch of other mechanics such as slamming your opponent to the ground that they bounce back in the air so you can keep attacking them, running, fake dizzy-ing to mindfuck with the opponent, knock back opponents into the wall to keep the combo going, and infinite desperate super moves when your health is low.

That new fighting game Mike Z is working on was in my YouTube recs. I guess it's back to business for him in fighting game development?

Has there been any update on the legal conflict between him and his former company/Skullgirls devs?

All attention is on Black Mary and for good reason, it's an Obamanation compared to the real Blue Mary. Worth pointing out also that the Thai fighter to Mary's left also got whitewashed.

Honestly, I'm betting that the "black Mary" fiasco can be explained by player characters equipping Blue Mary costume gear. That's what I think is happening. I don't think they've actually turned her black for the sake of "diversity" reasons. SF6's character creator is as robust as Tekken 8's is, and I bet that's what it is.

Yeah, I'm willing to say it's callicom just inserting dei anywhere it can.
I really don't think SNK would officially allow that.
