“Look at this, at my daily humiliation.” [shows plastic hook-can-opener widget] “I am not permitted to carry a knife on a job site, not even a little two inch pocket knife to cut straps or open packaging. Although I work with numerous lethal tools, if I have a razor or knife on me at anytime I can be fired.” [1]
-Nero the Pict

The man then showed me a paper, that he wanted me to take and write an article on why America will never do anything or win anything as a safety first bitch nest.

“I have to fill at least one of these out on every job I go to.”

My eye will explode if I try to read this. So I will reproduce the headings and count the yes/no answers that must be filled out by the maintenance technician, in an obvious attempt to make sure that if he is injured, he will not be compensated and might even be terminated, blamed, sued, etc.

I could see workplace life headed this way in 2009 as I was among three men who had worked with walk behind lifts and jacks for decades, who had to be retrained in a two hour session by a much younger man who had not actually worked with this equipment, in order to qualify for insurance coverage.

Below Nero explains to me a certain roof leak he was tasked to fix.

“The ladder is anchored. Fine, but even then, hauling up a bucket of roof sealant it can shift, and I have no helper which is the idea behind all of this safety checklist bullshit. I get up there to fix one hole, and procedure requires me in 90 degree heat to put on this heavy fire retardant suit and harness, as if heat stroke is not a hazard. I must then tie off. This means, that if I fall, I will be anchored to the roof and swing down and get bashed against the exterior wall and then hang there, by myself, until employees arrive at this abandoned work location on Monday, circulation to my legs cut off. [1] This location, like many, has no cell service. I work at a lot of remote government locations.”

“This is basically done instead of sending a helper, thereby denying me the best safety net, a guy to hand me tools, hold the ladder, scrape my ass up and drive me to the nearest hospital. Essentially I am being put in danger to cut an employee off the service call and then made to fill out this bogus form so that I may be blamed for any accident that befalls me.”

“On this one particular call, is also demonstrated the insane irony of our entire fucked up society-economy-country and this safety first mentality. I am there to fix one hole in the metal roof of a prefabricated piece-of-shit structure. To do so I must suit up, which takes more time than the task, and I must tie off to a new anchor point every six feet. Each anchor point requires me to drill twelve holes in the roof. So, by the time I get to the hole I need to patch, I have made 50 holes in that fucking roof!”

I laughed and laughed with hearty abandon.

I then felt guilty for a moment, and that passed—and I laughed again.

Sorry, Bro, that it has fallen to you to maintain the outsourced bandaids that have been applied to the blundering mechanistic Leviathan that is our monstrous mother.

Notes
-1. It occurs that this knife prohibition prevents a man who has fallen while tied off at a job site where he is alone, from cutting himself free of the harness

Contrast with "10 managers for 1 worker" at Twitter or the myriad other useless jobs.

That's kind of what it is. I garun-fucking-tee that this dude has like a dozen managers, all of whom are desperate to avoid getting their retirment cut.

What causes this, surprisingly, ISN'T nanny-state-itis, like the author assumes.

What causes it is "Zero Tolerance Policy" bullshit.

Everyone is so concerned in making sure that they don't fuck up and lose 10-20 years of work and see their pension go away because Manuel the Border Hopping Taco Smuggler fell at work and twisted his pinkie and is now suing for eleventy trillion dollars.

If they send too many people to the job site, they get accused of wasting government resources. BAM! Done. Doesn't matter that we used to get shit done by just throwing people at it till it was done.
If they spend too much on tools, BAM! Wasting government money.
Buy too much materials. BAM! Wasting government money.
Someone gets hurt. BAM!
Someone doesn't get the job done. BAM!

Every one of those can lose you your career.

It isn't nanny state.

It's Zero Tolerance.

Oh, and faggoty reporters constantly FOIAing everything in hopes of finding a budget that ran $3.00 over or some taco smuggler that hurt their eyebrow to write a story because they all furiously masturbate about winning awards and maybe being allowed to see some pussy if they break a huge story that causes the US government to explode in flame and people's jobs and lives get ruined.

I had to look up this awful 'hook can opener' thing.

I kind of get it. You keep your fingernails well trimmed so you don't have to clean them, so it's harder to open pull tab cans. But you aren't allowed to carry a knife like a man, so you have to carry one of these cunts. Horrifying

Where does this guy work? Who the hell is he? I googled Nero the Pict and found this no-name podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBcOFzafZlk
From the description:
Special guest from north of Yo Adrian's Wall, Nero the Pict. I didn't remember to bring this up during the podcast, but this is my favorite nom de James, partly because of my interest in Hadrian's Wall but really because it is perfect. Nero tells us about the restaurant and social scene in Baltimore, which may be in your city's future, so pay attention. He talks about his interest in history, including the riots of 1968, restrictions on trucks in the city, and many funny stories. The Crackpot Podcast features itinerant writer and laborer James LaFond, and sleep deprived motherslave Lynn Lockhart.

Apparently Nero the Pict is some guy who works in Baltimore? What the hell?
This whole thing is fishy as fuck. Anybody who's worked construction knows that all the paperwork is just to fuck us over but I really would like to know where they sent someone to work on a roof ALONE but also forcing him to tie off to do it? I just find that hard to believe. Any place that would let you work alone on something like that would also not give a shit about how you did it. It just doesn't add up.

It makes sense as a Catch-22 engineered by administrators to comply with laws, insurance requirements, etc, while also absolving themselves of liability and also getting to slash the work force. In my particular field we're very safety minded, we're all given generous sick leave, and there's a clear chain of command for addressing grievances. In reality, everyone is working 18-20 hour shifts repeatedly due to short staffing, using more than a few days of sick leave every year will get you fired, and the chain of command shuffles about at least every third month so that nobody is actually expected to take responsibility. So people get injured constantly just because of physical and mental fatigue but it's their fault because good lord, why didn't you use all of the many, many resources that are required to be provided?

Not the worst incident but one that still sticks out to me. Once the snitch squad that monitors everyone for compliance came through. Two people were put on unpaid suspension for bringing in unauthorized medicine - ibuprofen for joint pains in one instance, another for cramps, both documented cases with legit prescriptions for over the counter ibuprofen. And yet, they were suspended for different reasons.

One of them had the full prescription container, so about 21 ibuprofen pills. The other had 6 pills in a ziploc bag. Can YOU solve this devious puzzle before Dr. Braino's evil plan trimphs?!!

You can only bring in medicine in the original prescription container BUT you can't bring in too much of it even if that's what was provided.

Blame unions. They are the most litigious motherfuckers ever and a leech on society. So corporations have to turn around and babyproof everything so their communist slugs don't have something they can sue over. Unless you work in a coal mine or a turn of the century cotton mill, you don't need a union and if you think you do you're a faggot.
